The Machine Learning and Data Analytics Symposium that started yesterday aims to provide tools for non-researchers, in addition to research and application of data.
The fourth conference organised by Qatar Computing Research Institute and Boeing discussed several aspects of machine learning  and data analytics on the first day of the conference being held at Qatar National Convention Centre.
“Machine learning has become so essential in several applications and fields. It is one of the most important areas in science and engineering. The conference focuses on machine learning, data analytics and artificial intelligence,” said Dr Dragos Margineantu, technical fellow, Boeing Research and Technology.
“Machine learning is a field that focuses on algorithms that are grown based on data. They produce models which are used for prediction, decision making and understanding certain process. We collect data and produce models and use the data for decision making,” he explained.
“We have collected a lot of data through sensors in air planes, cars, our homes and other places. This data can have millions of variables. This year at the conference we are also showcasing tools that could be in the hands of the non-researchers.They can use this technology without knowing the details,” he continued.
Dr Sanjay Chawla, principal scientist, Data Analytics Group, QCRI  said that based on the data collected from the customers and other sources, companies could predict what could be their inventories.
“They can keep stock of things according to the predictions using the data. We are working with Qatar Airways to predict cargo. Using the data we predict which flight could have more cargo and which will have less. We are using lots of data and develop new programmes and applications. At QCRI, we have a number of applications using machine learning.We have a programme called ADER for artificial intelligence for disaster response,” said Dr Chawla.
According to Ivan Gale, associate director, Industry and Government Engagement, Boeing, machine learning and data analytics field is advancing very fast.
 “The research done by QCRI is very valuable for Boeing and the conference is an example of Boeing’s commitment towards Qatar and its goals towards becoming a knowledge-based country,” he said.
Dr Margineantu  said that such conferences are  really necessary as they are  a major platform for exchange of ideas in the region.
“Boeing produces really safe and respected products. Machine learning  and data analytics are priorities for Boeing and we use it for different purposes such as optimising or making the products better and faster,” he added.
