Cash prizes of up to QR4mn and discounts up to 50% await shoppers at the first edition of the month-long Shop Qatar festival, which aims to usher in a ‘retailtainment’ shopping experience to the country.
Launched on Saturday evening at Mall of Qatar, the festival dubbed as ‘A Brand New Tradition’ offers prizes at three weekly raffle draws.
In a statement, Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) said the first three weekly raffle draws will take place on the first three Thursdays of the festival (January 12, 19, and 26) with 15 cash prizes (from QR10,000 to QR300,000).
The concluding day of Shop Qatar (February 7) will see a mega-draw with a jackpot prize of QR1mn, in addition to 14 other cash prizes from QR 20,000 to QR 120,000.
To get a raffle coupon for the draws, shoppers need to spend QR200 at any of the participating retailers, which include Mall of Qatar, Ezdan Mall, Hyatt Plaza, Al Khor Mall, Lagoona Mall, Gulf Mall, Landmark, Dar Al Salam Mall, The Gate Mall, and The Pearl-Qatar.
QTA expects the festival to attract more visitors due to its timing in the winter months and coincides with some of the major tourism events in Qatar.
QTA chief marketing and promotion officer Rashed al-Qurese noted that Shop Qatar falls within mid-year holidays in the neighbouring GCC countries, an opportunity for potential visitors to spend more time in the country.
Shop Qatar’s first weekend (January 12 to 14) will feature food trucks and stalls on the Doha Corniche, offering various snacks and drinks, apart from the fireworks display near the Al Mourjan Restaurant, which will light up the skies in the evening.
In the same week, visitors will also have the chance to watch episodes of Siraj, the 3D animation of ‘edutainment’ TV series, to be set up by Qatar Foundation (QF). A mobile library will welcome children who want to hear or read their favourite stories.
Children will also be given a chance to read books at a dedicated corner at Mall of Qatar for QF’s National Reading Campaign.
Hyatt Plaza is hosting a daily African Circus until January 21 in its outdoor area. On weekdays, shows run from 6.30pm to 8pm and on weekends, from 5.30pm to 9pm. Free roaming shows at the malls will continue throughout the festival.
“Shop Qatar is a new addition to the country’s rich calendar of annual festivals and tourism events, which has been steadily growing over the past few years,” QTA said. “In its first edition, the festival aims to shed light on this Qatar’s retail and entertainment offering, and celebrate it with Qatar’s residents and visitors.”
The festival will also offer an array of live cultural shows, performances by renowned singers and international comedians, and a wide range of family-friendly entertainment activities “in a festive and safe environment that reflects local culture and heritage.”
