More than 40 primary school teachers representing 40 independent schools were honoured last week, marking the end of a week-long professional development programme jointly hosted by Qatar University’s National Centre for Educator Development and
ExxonMobil Qatar

Teachers took part in interactive activities in a classroom setting, which taught them the use of active learning and inquiry-based teaching techniques designed to engage students in the learning process and motivate interest in math and science.

The Supreme Education Council provided math and science specialists who also participated in the academy throughout the week, providing them with an insight into the academy and its mission.

“Qatar has a responsibility to invest in the education needed to help develop people and communities, and foster the intellectual capacity required to address society’s future challenges,” said Prof Dr Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad, president, Qatar University.

She added: “With our partner, ExxonMobil Qatar, we will continue to work together on projects such as the Qatar University ExxonMobil Teacher Academy to enhance educational excellence in science and mathematics, so that Qatar’s students can excel in leadership roles in Qatari society and the global workforce.”

Bart Cahir, president and general manager, ExxonMobil Qatar, said: “In 2013 alone, ExxonMobil provided $47.7mn worldwide to colleges, universities and other organisations that support higher education. Our education initiatives focus on supporting programmes that improve teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering and math, and platforms such as the Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy help us accomplish these objectives.”

Prof al-Misnad and Cahir distributed certificates to the graduates in recognition of their performance during the programme, as well as their dedication to improving their teaching skills, and to inspiring innovation in teaching for the good of student learning.

The Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy is part of a long-term commitment to education by ExxonMobil.
