The competitions of the 14th edition of Qatar International Falcons and Hunting Festival (Marmi 2023) started Sunday and will continue until January 28 at Sbkhat Marmi at the Sealine Area. The festival, organised by Al Qannas Qatari Society, is being held under the patronage of HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani. Local and international falconers are taking part in the competitions with some of them already established stars in the field and others aspiring to become prominent falconers. The festival aims at further establishing the heritage of falconry in the country, which has been considered as part of intangible cultural heritage of the UNESCO since 2010. Qatar is considered among the pioneer countries in the region that has been exerting great efforts to maintain this international heritage not only in Qatar but throughout various Arab and world countries. Marmi is considered among the largest specialised festivals in the field of falcons and hunting and enjoys great international attention.Mohamed bin Mubarak al-Ali, head of Al Tala'a (release of the falcons to hunt) Committee, explained that the rules and laws of the championship for this category remained unchanged from the previous edition. The distance between the place where the release of the falcons and the place of the release of the bustard bird (houbara) is estimated to be around 2 km and 1,900- 1,800 metres long according to the direction taken by the houbara, whether east or west.
