As part of its ongoing response to Cyclone Ditwah and the resulting floods in Sri Lanka, Qatar Charity distributed kitchen kits and essential household items to 560 affected families across four administrative divisions in Puttalam District. Benefactors in Qatar supported the project, which cost QR 266,575.
The project aims to help families who lost their belongings resume daily routines, ease hardships during recovery, and restore stability to their households.
The assistance included essential cooking utensils and household items. Many families lost these necessities after floods damaged their homes or swept away their belongings.
The intervention addressed urgent needs in the affected communities, particularly among low-income families unable to replace the items they had lost. The distributed supplies will help them prepare meals at home and manage household needs more independently.
Beneficiary Anne Roshani expressed her gratitude, saying: “The floods washed away all my belongings. The items Qatar Charity provided me today are worth more than 100 times their material value to me.”
Another beneficiary, Navodya Saubagya, said: “I am very happy to receive the kitchen kits provided by Qatar Charity. I extend my sincere thanks to Qatar Charity and the benefactors who supported this assistance.”
Ayesha Prasadi, Divisional Secretary of Arachchikattuwa, also praised the initiative. She noted that 360 families whose homes were destroyed received kitchen kits. She also thanked Qatar Charity for supporting the affected households.
The project supports families’ recovery by helping them regain stability and manage their daily needs. It also reflects Qatar Charity’s commitment to delivering assistance that preserves the dignity of disaster-affected communities.
The initiative builds on Qatar Charity’s earlier response to the cyclone, which included distributing 1,800 food baskets to affected families in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.
Qatar Charity also provided Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre with equipment to support search-and-rescue operations, including boat engines, electric generators, and water pumps.
The equipment strengthened the authorities’ ability to reach affected communities and respond to emergencies.
