Qatar has reaffirmed its support for diplomatic efforts to safeguard freedom of maritime navigation and achieve a comprehensive agreement that ensures lasting peace in the region.
Speaking during the MoFA's weekly media briefing Tuesday, Ibrahim bin Sultan al-Hashmi, director of the Media and Communications Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), said Qatar supports reaching an agreement on the Strait of Hormuz and that the immediate priority for all parties is to reach consensus on a solution to the ongoing crisis.
He stressed the importance of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz for countries around the world, emphasising that Qatar continues to work tirelessly with its regional and international partners to build consensus and advance dialogue toward a comprehensive resolution.
Al-Hashmi stressed that the closure of maritime waterways must not be normalised or treated as ordinary, describing such measures as unacceptable to Qatar and the international community. Accordingly, he called on the world to unite against any actions that could obstruct the freedom of navigation.
“The world has suffered enough from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and cannot bear the cost of closing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait as well,” he said, warning that disruptions to navigation through both strategic waterways would have catastrophic consequences for the world.
Reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy, al-Hashmi said peaceful negotiations remain the only way to resolve disputes of this nature. He also maintained that reaching a solution is neither difficult nor impossible, stressing that Qatar is continuing its efforts without pause to help achieve an agreement.
“The efforts will continue and will not stop,” he said, highlighting that the crisis affects the entire world and requires uninterrupted efforts to explore every possibility for a resolution.
In the meantime, he disclosed that a Qatari delegation will participate in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meetings, and the discussions on the maritime navigation crisis will be a top priority on the delegation’s agenda.
Regarding the attacks on Saudi Arabia, he reaffirmed Qatar’s solidarity with the kingdom and its support for all measures it takes to protect its security and territorial integrity.
