From a simple idea to a finished book, school textbooks in Qatar pass through a series of carefully coordinated stages to ensure their quality and readiness for classroom use before thousands of copies are distributed to schools nationwide.
Sarah Issa al-Sharim, director of the Curriculum and Learning Resources Department at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, said the production of a textbook begins with an idea that is gradually developed into structured educational content and subjected to multiple checks and revisions before reaching students in its final form.
She explained that the textbook in a student’s hands represents the outcome of extensive work carried out behind the scenes. Developing and drafting the educational material is only the beginning, with each component subsequently examined, reviewed, and refined to ensure it is suitable for classroom use.
“Every idea is tested, and every page of the book is reviewed,” al-Sharim said, highlighting the detailed process involved in preparing educational materials and ensuring their quality before they proceed to production.
The textbook production cycle begins with authorship and editing, during which the educational content is developed, written and refined. It then moves to the design stage, where the material is transformed into its final visual format, with attention given to presenting information in a way that is clear and appropriate for students.
Review serves as another key checkpoint, with the textbook's content and various elements examined before it proceeds to formal approval. Once the necessary approvals are completed, the books move into printing and production.
Following printing, thousands of copies are dispatched to schools across Qatar as part of preparations for the new academic year. The distribution stage connects the extensive work of curriculum specialists and other teams with the practical needs of students and teachers as they prepare to return to classrooms.
The process reflects the scale of coordination required to produce educational resources for Qatar’s school system. From curriculum development and educational writing to editing, review, design, approval, printing, and distribution, multiple professional teams work together to ensure that each textbook is ready before it reaches a student’s desk.
