Global aviation showed resilience in the first quarter of 2026, with passenger traffic rising 2.8% to reach 2.2bn travellers, despite higher fuel costs and geopolitical tensions.
The figure, according to the ACI World Airport Industry Report Q1 2026, was not only above last year’s levels but also 6.4% higher than the pre pandemic benchmark in 2019.
Africa and Asia Pacific led the growth, recording gains of 8.4% and 4.9% respectively, while Europe and Latin America Caribbean each grew by 4.3%. North America was broadly stable, edging up 0.5%, but the Middle East saw a sharp contraction of 13% as regional disruptions weighed heavily on demand.
ACI reported that international traffic continued to outperform domestic markets, with international passenger demand up 2.8% in the quarter compared with 2.7% for domestic.
Cargo volumes also held firm, rising 2.7%, while aircraft movements expanded 1.2%, underscoring the breadth of recovery across aviation segments.
Among the world’s busiest airports, Atlanta retained its top position for passengers, handling 24.1mn in the quarter, according to the report. Tokyo Haneda followed with 22.9mn passengers, while Guangzhou and Shanghai posted double digit growth, reflecting China’s strong rebound.
The report noted that Chicago O’Hare led in aircraft movements with more than 206,000 take offs and landings, while Hong Kong retained its crown in cargo, processing 1.21mn tonnes.
The US and China remained the largest aviation markets, but Brazil and Türkiye stood out with the strongest growth among major countries, stated the report.
Despite the resilience, the report stated that leading indicators point to softer demand ahead.
Advanced bookings for the second quarter fell 13.4%, with the steepest declines in Middle East markets.
Global seat capacity is expected to contract slightly by 0.8% in Q2, again driven by reductions in the Middle East, noted the report.
The full year forecast has been trimmed to 10bn passengers, down from 10.2bn, lowering expected annual growth to 2.7%, the report also pointed out.
