With the support of donors, Qatar Charity has launched the implementation of 24 water projects in four Somali states, as part of its ongoing efforts to improve access to safe water and strengthen essential services in drought-affected and water-scarce communities.
The projects are being implemented in Hirshabelle, Galmudug, Southwest State, and Northeastern Somalia. They include the drilling of 19 shallow wells, the construction of two water ponds, and the drilling of three deep wells, benefiting communities in need of reliable and sustainable water sources.
The launch of these projects comes amid growing challenges faced by several areas in Somalia due to water shortages and recurrent droughts, which continue to affect the living conditions of local populations, particularly in rural communities that depend on agriculture and livestock.
Yusuf Mohamed Abdullah, a community elder in Northeastern Somalia, expressed his appreciation for the launch of the projects, stressing that they respond to urgent needs in local communities. He noted that providing sustainable water sources will help reduce the burden on families and improve their daily living conditions.
He said: “We extend our sincere thanks to the generous donors who contributed to funding these projects through Qatar Charity. Their support will have a direct impact on improving people’s lives and ensuring access to water in the beneficiary areas.”
For his part, Is’haq Hero Moallim, an official in Wajid district of Southwest State, said that access to safe water remains one of the most vital needs of local communities, adding that the projects will contribute to improving health conditions and supporting livelihoods.
Abdulfattah Adam Moallim, director of Qatar Charity’s Somalia Office, emphasised that the projects form part of Qatar Charity’s continued humanitarian and development interventions aimed at enhancing water security and improving basic services in the most vulnerable areas.
He added: “We are grateful to the donors whose contributions made these projects possible. Qatar Charity will continue working with local partners to expand essential services and provide sustainable water solutions for communities in need.”
The launch of these projects builds on Qatar Charity’s continued work in the water, sanitation, and hygiene sector in Somalia. Over the past year, Qatar Charity implemented 76 projects in this sector, benefiting nearly 50,000 people.
