Qatar’s role in facilitating the recent US-Iran agreement has further cemented its position as a leading international mediator, according to Japan’s ambassador to Qatar Naoto Hisajima, who lauded Doha’s credibility, patience and commitment to dialogue.
The envoy told Gulf Times that Qatar played a critical role in bridging the gap between Washington and Tehran, noting that its balanced and consistent diplomatic approach has strengthened its standing as one of the world’s foremost mediation hubs.
“Japan highly appreciates Qatar’s contribution,” Hisajima said. “Doha’s ability to maintain meaningful dialogue simultaneously with both Washington and Tehran reflects remarkable credibility and diplomatic patience.”
He described the recently reached memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the US and Iran as a significant development for regional stability and international security.
“Japan welcomes this MoU as a major step toward resolving the situation,” the envoy said, hoping that its implementation would lead to a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear issue and contribute to broader regional stability.
The envoy said that Japan has pursued proactive diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions, maintaining high-level communication with Qatar, Iran and other relevant parties.
As the only country to have experienced atomic bombings during wartime, Hisajima said that Japan remains firmly opposed to Iran’s nuclear development while supporting a diplomatic resolution to the issue.
He also underlined the indispensable role of regional mediators in securing the agreement.
“This agreement was the result of tenacious negotiations by the parties, and the efforts of countries that played a mediating role were critical,” he pointed out. “Without actors maintaining open channels with both sides, an agreement of this nature would have been very difficult to achieve.”
According to Hisajima, trust is the foundation of successful mediation, and Qatar’s consistent neutrality has set its diplomacy apart.
“What truly distinguishes Qatar is its unwavering consistency,” he said. “Despite being under attack by one side, Qatar never retaliated or took sides; it absorbed pressure, kept channels open, and pursued its mediating role.”
The envoy added that such restraint enabled Doha to earn the confidence of all parties involved.
“This consistency is Qatar’s greatest diplomatic asset,” he said.
Hisajima said Qatar’s contribution to the US-Iran negotiations further validates its long-term investment in diplomacy.
“Without question, Qatar has invested enormously in building its capacity as a diplomatic hub, and this achievement further validates that commitment,” he said.
Reiterating Japan’s appreciation for its strategic partnership with Qatar, Hisajima recognised Doha’s growing role in advancing international peace and security.
“Qatar’s established impartiality and communication channels position Doha uniquely for a continued and expanded role in broader de-escalation, and Japan looks forward to working closely with Qatar toward that shared goal,” the envoy said.
