Qatar is ‘cautiously optimistic’ about the sustainable implementation of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the US and Iran to be signed on this Friday, resulting in greater regional security, Dr Majed bin Mohammed al-Ansari, adviser to the Prime Minister and official spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.
Speaking at a press briefing, Dr al-Ansari said that Qatar continues to play a responsible and constructive role in supporting regional peace and stability.
“We are cautiously optimistic that the signing of the memorandum of understanding will lead to a next stage of regional security. We are looking towards the support of the whole region, the support of Pakistani delegation in reaching a full solution to this issue. Obviously any conflict around the world is never really ended until there is a sustainable way of doing so,” said Dr al-Ansari.
Dr al-Ansari stated that the agreement could open the door to a new phase of dialogue, about several major topics and key issues.
He underlined Qatar’s support for the Pakistani-led mediation efforts for peace between the US and Iran, praising Pakistan’s role in bringing the parties to this stage and its continued leadership as the main mediator.
“We are looking towards the support of the whole region, the support of the Pakistani delegation in reaching a full solution to this issue. We engage fully as supporters of mediation in the Pakistani mediation and we are continuing to do that. We are talking about various issues, regional security and non-aggression and good-neighbourly relations between this region and Iran and so forth,” explained the official.
The official also suggested that there is a need for a regional dialogue as part of the negotiations after the signing of the memorandum of understanding to solve any misunderstandings or trust deficit. “These are issues that have plagued the region for decades. They will not be resolved midday. So we are looking forward to a platform to be established for the engagement to begin, to start discussing all of these issues. All this can not be done in a meeting or two to discuss all the relevant issues,” pointed out Dr al-Majed.
He reaffirmed that Qatar takes its responsibility toward regional security seriously and remains committed to supporting diplomatic solutions that promote dialogue, de-escalation, and peace.
“Obviously, we remain vigilant, and our main concern is the safety of those who live here in Qatar and in our region, making sure that there is a sustainable move towards security, regaining the security that we have always enjoyed in our region. We are quite optimistic that we are on the right path now towards regional security. Obviously, there are a lot of challenges coming ahead, but let us take this as a moment to embrace some optimism towards the MoU and moving towards more negotiations,” he stated.
“We are confident that the MoU will reopen the scale of global navigation, and that will allow countries like Qatar to again be supplying energy to the world, and to lessen the burden of the closure of the critical international energy markets and food markets that have been affected by the crisis,” added Dr al-Ansari.
