Southeast Asia’s rising tourism destination, Timor-Leste, is preparing for a significant boost to its visitor economy with the announcement of two major international events and expanded air connectivity to Malaysia and Australia. These developments are expected to further strengthen the country’s reputation as one of the top destinations to visit in 2026.
Tasifest Music and Cultural Festival
Among the highlights is the Tasifest Music and Cultural Festival, one of the most anticipated cultural celebrations in the country. The festival will take place in Tasitolu, Dili, on May 29–30, 2026.The 2025 edition attracted more than 50,000 attendees, and this year’s event promises another vibrant showcase of music, culture, sustainability and innovation.
Headliners for the 2026 festival include renowned Indonesian singer Iwan Fals, musical duo Calema from São Tomé and Príncipe, Angolan singer Rui Orlando, and Guy Sebastian, winner of the first season of Australian Idol in 2003. Several local artists and DJs will also perform, while Portuguese waste-transformation artist Bordalo II will lead a sustainable art workshop as part of the festival programme.
Dili International Marathon
Another major highlight on the 2026 tourism calendar is the Dili International Marathon. President José Ramos-Horta, patron of the event, recently announced August 8, 2026, as the official date for this year’s race under the theme “Love Our Forests and Wildlife.”
The event will feature a full marathon, half marathon, a 10km race for para-athletes and a 5km fun run open to participants of all ages. The race routes will follow the scenic coastline of the capital, Dili, with all courses internationally certified and supported by professional electronic chip timing to ensure accurate results.

Strengthening travel access to the country, local carrier Aero Dili has announced two new international routes. The airline will launch twice-weekly flights from Dili to Kuala Lumpur beginning March 28, 2026, followed by a twice-weekly service to Darwin, Australia, starting May 24.
The new routes will expand Aero Dili’s international network to six destinations, complementing its existing services to Bali, Singapore, Xiamen and Fuzhou.
“These two major events and the increased international inbound flights will certainly help strengthen our attractiveness and reputation as an emerging tourism destination in Southeast Asia,” said Antonio da Silva, Director General of Tourism.
“These developments, along with Timor-Leste recently being named by two major travel publications as one of the Top 20 Destinations to Visit in 2026, should see us welcoming a record number of visitors in 2026,” he added.
With its unique blend of vibrant Timorese culture and Portuguese heritage, Timor-Leste offers pristine beaches, some of the world’s most diverse coral reefs, world-class diving, rugged mountains and traditional villages. With improved air connectivity and a welcoming atmosphere, the country invites travellers to experience rich traditions, breathtaking natural beauty, and warm hospitality in a truly unspoiled destination.
