As artificial intelligence (AI) pervades all realms of digital activities, technologies should respect individual’s rights and foster transparency and create ethical AI for user empowerment, a top industry expert has urged.
Speaking to Gulf Times at the Web Summit Qatar 2025 on Tuesday, Mozilla Corporation chief executive Laura Chambers noted that it is important to look at the impact AI has on the Web in general.
“We are looking at this in a multitude of areas,” she said. “It is a very new space, so I think we are experimenting and building solutions in different areas.”
“We are integrating AI to make sure the experience is easier, that you can navigate content to make the workflows easier,” Chambers continued. “We are also looking at the impact that AI will have on the Web in general.”
The Mozilla chief said that AI is going to have really positive impact and huge potential.
“It can make our lives simpler,” she stated. “It can make us more focused on different things. It can increase our output. It can do things for us on the Internet. I think AI is going to have a really positive impact.”
At the same time, she expressed concern whether it will provide enough choice for the users.
“What I am worried about is will people still have choice? Will they have transparency? Will they still be able to have agency in how they interact with the Web and will it be safe,” she posed.
“And so, those are things that we have to work on from a policy level, a regulatory level,” Chambers said. “We have to work with the technology to make sure the technology enables it. And then the user experience to ensure that the user is very clear on what is happening and still feels in control of their experience.”
She pointed out that practical solutions are necessary for balancing innovation with privacy as well as providing more control over their data.
"I think there has to be some regulation,” the expert said. “You have to be careful about making it too strict because sometimes that can really benefit the big tech companies and make it harder for small companies to innovate.”
“Regulation is healthy,” she continued. “I think what we always advocate is for regulation that enhances competition and innovation which is in the best interest of the user.”
Chambers said that they are really looking at how to integrate AI into the user experience to make the workflow easier.
“We are trying to make it easier to find good information,” she said. “And then, we are looking at how AI is going to affect the way all of us experience the Web. What are those new interfaces, and what are the new needs.”
As for treating private data, Chambers said that there is a whole bunch of problems that are emerging in the way people interact with the Web.
“The way that we interact with the Web today, it is pretty transparent,” she noted. “You have a lot of control over the kind of interaction with the Web.”
“Now, as AI comes in, there will be different flavours,” she added. “We will be consuming information in different ways.”
“We are already seeing that the information on the Internet is less reliable,” Chambers said. “And so the browser is going to play a really important role to help you navigate that.”
