Qatar Museums (QM) is set to unveil a groundbreaking exhibition in Venice, titled ‘Our Spectacles, Your Spectacles: Promising Insights of Leading Cinema’, scheduled to run from April 19 to November 24.

Promising a unique exploration of resistance, borders, deserts, and the resilience found within ruins, the exhibition is set to captivate audiences with its diverse array of films and video projects from more than 40 artists and filmmakers from the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Produced by QM with support from Media City Qatar and co-organised by the Doha Film Institute, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, and the future Art Mill Museum in collaboration with ACP Art Capital Partners, this exhibition marks a collaborative effort to showcase the rich cinematic talents emerging from these regions.

In a statement shared on its social media platforms, QM teased the exhibition’s thematic depth, offering insights into the fiery spirit of resistance captured by filmmakers. One of the 10 themed gallery rooms, titled ‘Fires’, explores the concept of resistance similar to blazing flames that refuse to be extinguished, providing a platform for artists to dig deeper into the significance behind the spark of resistance.

In addition, the exhibition also shines a spotlight on the theme of ‘Borders’, inviting visitors to traverse between permissible and forbidden spaces depicted in the works of filmmakers who navigate stacked, destroyed, and limited landscapes. Through engaging cinematography, these creators aim to conquer reduced and confined territories, challenging conventional boundaries.

Highlighting the allure of desert landscapes, the erosion of civilisations, and the revival of heritage, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the essence of these themes through the lens of artists and filmmakers. The theme of ‘Ruins’ showcases the poignant works of Lida Abdul, resonating with the echoes of history and resilience amidst decay, inviting viewers to contemplate the meanings within these dilapidated structures.

QM noted that ‘Our Spectacles, Your Spectacles: Promising Insights of Leading Cinema’ is poised to deliver a transformative experience, aiming to broaden cinematic perspectives and elevate diverse voices.
