As part of its continued efforts to combat poverty and provide decent livelihoods for needy and low-income groups, Qatar Charity (QC) announced that it is continuing to implement its economic empowerment project for 2023-2024 in 27 countries around the world.
The QR115mn project, expected to benefit more than 40,000 people, will be completed next year.
This coincides with the celebration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, corresponding to October 17 of each year.
The slogan for this year is *Decent Work and Social Protection – Putting Dignity into Practice for All.
The “Scale Up” project, implemented by the QC in partnership with the Qatar Fund for Development and with technical support from the Spark organisation, aims to help small and medium-sized Syrian companies that were forced to leave their homeland due to the crisis.
Taher al-Haj Mohamed, from the Syrian city of Aleppo, is one of the success stories from the programme, a QC statement said Monday.
He was working in cosmetics and aromatic oils in Syria.
However, due to the difficult circumstances caused by the Syrian crisis, he was forced to leave his country and search for new opportunities in Turkiye.
In 2018, he began working in Turkiye and licensed his company in 2019.
Taher faced many challenges as a manager of a small new company in a new country, due to different laws and general business culture, but he never stopped looking for opportunities to develop his company and increase its success.
Taher then heard about the “Scale Up” project, applied and was accepted as one of the 200 participating companies.
Over a period of three months, he participated in intensive training courses including financial management, risk management, product marketing, and brand management.
However, the most important thing that the project provided to Taher’s company was the guidance and support he received, as visits by trainers were organised to his workplace.
They helped him overcome several obstacles and difficulties, and he was also able to improve his digital system to become more effective and secure.
In addition to training and guidance, Taher participated in a forum for businessmen organised by the QC at the end of the training, during which he met representatives of several companies and investors, which helped him conclude several agreements with other companies in addition to exchanging knowledge and experiences.
Thanks to the technical support and training provided by the “Scale Up” project, Taher’s Maxonal Cosmetics was able to expand its scope of work to cover many regions in Turkiye and went beyond that to export its products to other countries such as Australia, England, Germany, and Egypt.
