The Doha Film Institute (DFI) is set to present a one-of-a-kind film series as part of the Qatar – Indonesia Year of Culture 2023, spotlighting Indonesian filmmakers' immense talent and creativity.
This series will showcase three distinct films by emerging and established Indonesian filmmakers at the Museum of Islamic Art Auditorium, aimed at bridging the divide between commercial and independent cinema.
The first film, titled “Before, Now & Then” by Kamila Andini and scheduled to be screened on August 31 at 7pm, introduces the audience to a complex tale of a woman seeking refuge in a second marriage to a wealthy man.
On September 1, DFI will feature “Galang” by Adriyanto Dewo, a film that digs into the aftermath of a tragic incident that occurs during an underground music concert, leaving a young boy grappling with guilt over the loss of his sister.
Director Jeihan Angga’s “Mecca I’m Coming” follows on September 2, a story revolving around Eddy, who embarks on a journey of faith and determination to prove himself worthy of becoming Eni's husband.
The Year of Culture Film Series forms part of the vibrant cultural exchange between Qatar and Indonesia as it builds upon the foundation of numerous past screenings hosted by DFI. It includes collaborations with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Museum of Islamic Art.
These films screened in June include Mohamed Shaikhow’s ‘Hope’, Mariam al-Dhubhani’s ‘Just Another Memory’, and Antoine Antabi’s ‘Rest In Piece’.
DFI previously showcased some of the films by pioneering director and editor, Moufida Tlatli, also one of the first female filmmakers from the Arab world to achieve worldwide acclaim.
“Tlatli’s groundbreaking films paved the way for Arab feminist and independent cinema—leaving a lasting impression on the Arab filmmaking industry and beyond,” DFI noted.
The DFI also played a pivotal role in previous Year of Culture initiatives, strengthening partnerships with various countries to foster mutual understanding through the arts.
The Year of Culture Film Series also serves as a testament to the power of cinema in transcending geographical boundaries and fostering meaningful connections between nations, according to DFI.
