The second edition of the ‘Future Engineer’ programme has begun while introducing students to various engineering disciplines at the Public Works Authority (Ashghal). To be implemented in coordination with Qatar Scientific Club (QSC), the programme on the first day introduced the students with direct practical application in several Ashghal departments while motivating them to think creatively. Also, the programme, according to a statement from Ashghal, makes students acquainted with modern technology during its stages.
On the first day, the programme participants visited the Lusail Sports Circuit upgrade project to learn about the different stages of the project and to sample some of the materials used in the project to be examined later in the laboratories.
Eng. Hamad al-Badr - Acting Assistant Director of Building Projects Department at Ashghal said the students, while visiting the project site, learned about the steps to implement the project using modern technology and the difficulties facing the project during implementation and how to overcome them taking into account the aspects of sustainability and the environment during the course of work.
The programme aims to familiarise students with various engineering disciplines to guide them through the process of choosing their own. This is by offering various workshops on different engineering disciplines with an explanation to their importance and advantages.
There are two stages for the programme. The first stage is where the students are introduced to the mechanisms of working in Ashghal’s laboratories and the departments. On the first day of the first stage, the programme provided an overview of Ashghal and its role in infrastructure development and familiarised the participants with the importance of project management and planning. On the second day, the participants will take part in a discussion session on risk management and its importance in project management and project implementation plans which includes team management and progress monitoring, with an hour of brainstorming for participants to identify and address significant problems being faced by Ashghal.
On the third day, participants will make a field visit to a site to learn how to apply project management principles in working life and then debrief information and results on site visits and discuss how to adopt project management principles in different projects and contexts. On the fourth day, the Engineering Services Department will familiarise participants with the contractual procedures from pre-contract to post-contract management. Finally, the participants will learn about IT engineering, Quality and Safety management and its role in Ashghal’s projects, and training in the Laboratories Section (Environmental Laboratory Unit and Building Materials Laboratory Unit).
During the second stage of the programme, participants will be introduced to the laboratories of QSC over four days and in each of the QSC laboratories and workshops. Participants will be able to apply what they have learned to miniature structures for some engineering projects that are being carried out in different locations. Participants will work on the design of prototypes and thus the construction of the three-dimensional basic building materials and their connectivity to electronic devices.
