German commentator Sandro Wagner has faced backlash for describing the traditional Qatari men’s clothing as “bathrobes”, a remark that has been slammed as “racist” by many on social media.
The move was seen by many as “disrespectful” to the Qatari culture and tradition.
Wagner, also a former Germany forward, made the derogatory comment during German broadcaster’s ZDF live stream of Sunday’s World Cup match between Germany and Spain.
Thousands of visitors in Qatar have also embraced the thobe, with men from all over the world, mostly from the West, were seen donning the traditional attire while walking around the streets of Doha.
Wagner’s ignited an uproar on social media, as analysts and Qatari residents highlighted the underlying racism behind his remarks.
“When you are a racist and uncultured, arrogant and obnoxious the world doesn’t expect much from you. I am not surprised,” Fahad al-Ameri, a Qatari businessman, said in a tweet, according to Doha News.
Separately, prominent analyst Dr Andreas Krieg quote-tweeted the article saying, “Day-to-day racism in Germany”.
Wagner himself later apologised for his disparaging comments on the thobe.
The urge to hurl ugly racist accusations and comments against the region and its people continue to persist with some even though fans from around the world have said they are having a great time in Qatar, due to the faultless organisation of the tournament and the generous hospitality of the Qatari people.
While, a number of people like Wagner want respect and acceptance for their values and beliefs, his comments clearly show disrespect to the others, as have been voiced by many social media users. Many took to twitter and other social media platforms expressing their rejection of such racism, stressing the importance of mutual respect.
Accordingly, ZDF replied to some of the complaints on Twitter with this brief statement: “Sandro Wagner’s comments about the Thobe unfortunately occurred during an emotional phase of the game. He’s not permitted (to say that). We’ll talk about it.”
In the meantime, in Qatar, a carnival of multicultural diversity is on display as fans from around the world have continued to express their joy at the excellent time they are having in Qatar.
Visitors have all the freedom to practise their traditions and culture in Qatar but what is expected of them is respect for the local culture and this is the normal requirement everywhere across the world- to respect the law of the land- a local commentator said.
Qatar has been known for welcoming people from all over the world and the country has been open to all nationalities to live and work, as it has been reiterated by even the top leadership of the country. All are welcome in Doha, "without discrimination to enjoy the football matches and the amazing atmosphere of the tournament, in addition to witnessing the economic and cultural renaissance in the country".
A short tour across Doha on any given day will prove that those who promoted hatred and heinous racism have missed an exceptional experience of happiness and entertainment.
