Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding Company (MPHC) on Tuesday said its associate QChem has outlined additional budget of QR900mn for projects in the pipeline spanning over the next three years as part of efforts to ensure sustainable economic performance.
QChem has also initiated and completed multiple projects this year with a budget of more than QR80mn to optimise the production, enhance the safety of its people and assets and ensure compliance with environmental regulatory requirements, MPHC said in its first sustainability report.
The report said QChem saw an 8.3% year-on-year reduction in the total GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions in 2020 with SO2 (sulphur dioxide) emissions intensity dropping 31% compared to 2019.
QChem continued to improve its environmental performance, spurring innovation and ownership among employees through effective pollution prevention programmes that have been recently implemented to include environmental aspects, such as flaring reduction, waste minimisation, energy optimisation, and chemicals management, MPHC said.
As part of QChem’s operational excellence, the company aims to reduce the energy usage and improve energy efficiency throughout all of its operations.
QChem’s total energy consumption for all operations dropped 12% in 2020, with energy intensity also dropping a respectable 2% over last year. "This was a result of several initiatives implemented to optimise energy consumption," the report said.
QChem also managed to decrease waste disposal by 16%, which reflected in a 2% drop in waste intensity. Simultaneously, it worked on increasing the percentage of waste recycled out of total waste generated to achieve a rate that is 27% higher than last year.
"I am pleased with the achievements by the group during 2020 wherein the group maintained reliable and safe operations with zero tier 1 & tier 2 process safety events, zero company responsible environment events and embarking on a journey to implement a world-class GHG Accounting and Reporting (A&R) programme in line with QatarEnergy approved procedure for GHG emissions," said Ahmad Saif al-Sulaiti, MPHC chairman.
On Qatar Vinyl Company (QVC), the MPHC sustainability report said the QVC had made detailed assessment of groundwater contamination in its plant area and recommended remedial actions.
In order to identify, reduce, and mitigate environmental impacts, Qapco (operator of QVC plants) integrates management and oversight mechanisms at all levels of operation.
Highlighting that wastewater from QVC treatment plant is in compliance to the requirements but cooling seawater chlorine ‘exceedances’ are "concern"; it said "this needs modifications in the cooling water inlet structure, which has been scheduled to be implemented during 2021 turnaround."
