Container and cargo throughput at Qatar’s Hamad, Doha and Al Ruwais ports displayed robust performance year-on-year this June with more than 26% growth in the number of ships calling on these ports, according to Mwani Qatar.
There was also a robust double-digit year-on-year expansion in the RORO (automobile) volumes and building materials through these ports in May 2021; indicating a robust outlook for the private sector.
The number of ships calling on Qatar's three ports stood at 301 in June 2021, which was 26.47% higher on yearly basis. However, it was down by about 1% on monthly basis. As many as 1,652 ships had called on these ports during the first six months of this year.
Hamad Port’s strategic geographical location offers opportunities to create cargo movement towards the upper Gulf, supporting countries such as Kuwait and Iraq and south towards Oman. As many as 137 vessels had called on this port in June this year.
Qatar's share in the overall Middle East trade is expected to significantly increase with the robust technological infrastructure supporting the Hamad Port's second container terminal (CT2).
The container handling through the three ports stood at 130,815 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), which grew 12.52% year-on-year but fell 6.12% month-on-month in June 2021. The container handling stood at 819,253 TEUs in January-June this year.
QTerminals had recently tweeted that Hamad Port handled container volume of more than 5mn TEUs since the start of operations.
The Hamad Port, which is the largest eco-friendly project in the region and internationally recognised as one of the largest green ports in the world, alone saw 129,640 TEUs of containers handling in June 2021.
The general cargo handled through the three ports stood at 176,439 tonnes in June 2021, which registered a 9.21% and 52.59% expansion on a yearly and monthly basis respectively. Hamad Port alone handled 103,947 freight tonnes of break-bulk and 66,370 freight tonnes of bulk in June this year.
On a cumulative basis, the general cargo movement through the three ports totalled 878,073 tonnes in January-June this year.
The building materials handled amounted to 32,142 tonnes in June this year, which surged 48.58% on a yearly basis; even as it declined 40.89% month-on-month in the review period. A total of 334,599 tonnes of building materials had been handled by these three ports during the first six months of this year.
The rebound of business activities, especially in the construction sector; rather corroborates the Qatar Financial Centre’s positive outlook on the non-energy private sector.
The three ports had handled 2,622 livestock in June, which nevertheless showed 86.77% and 71.72% decline year-on-year and month-on-month respectively. The ports had handled 169,639 heads during January-June this year.
The three ports handled 5,927 vehicles (RORO) in June 2021, which shot up 82.03% year-on-year but declined 11.05% on monthly basis. They together handled 39,486 vehicles in the first six months of this year. Hamad Port alone handled 5,811 units in June this year.
