National carrier Qatar Airways keeps expanding and raising the nation’s flag high all over the globe despite the illegal blockade on the country by a quartet of Arab neighbours.
A member of the oneworld global alliance, Qatar’s national carrier is among the fastest-growing airlines operating one of the youngest fleets in the world.
Celebrating more than 20 years of operations, the award-winning Qatar Airways now flies to more than 150 business and leisure destinations across the world using a modern fleet of more than 200 aircraft.
Qatar Airways flies one of the youngest fleets in the sky, featuring the world’s most technologically-advanced and environmentally friendly aircraft.
The airline is the global launch customer for technologically-advanced Airbus A350-1000.
Qatar Airways plans a host of exciting new destinations for 2018/19, including Cebu and Davao (Philippines); Langkawi (Malaysia); Da Nang (Vietnam) and Bodrum and Antalya (Turkey).
At the ITB Berlin in March this year, Qatar Airways Group chief executive Akbar al-Baker said, “During the blockade, Qatar Airways continued its expansion; it continued its march ahead. We kept our country supplied and we became prouder as a nation. The blockade made my ruler an icon of defiance. Today, we are more independent than we were nine months ago. We are very defiant, and Qatar Airways will keep on expanding and keep on raising the flag for my country all over the globe.”
Al-Baker said his airline is “tremendously excited to announce further expansion” with a significant number of new destinations to be added to its extensive global network throughout 2018 and 2019.
“This is a direct reflection of our commitment to connecting travellers across all corners of the world in a way that is meaningful and convenient to them. We are committed to continuing our ambitious growth strategy, in order to be able to provide our passengers with as much choice as possible and to take them anywhere in the world they wish to go.”
Qatar Airways is already the official sponsor of many top-level sporting events, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and FIFA Club World Cup, reflecting the values of sports as a means of bringing people together, something at the core of the airline’s own brand message — ‘Going Places Together’.
During the delivery of Qatar Airways’ first Boeing 747-8F freighter in Seattle, United States in September 2017, al-Baker told Gulf Times, “It would be remiss of me not to mention the recent illegal blockade on my country and the potential impact this could have had on our cargo operations. However, I am pleased to tell you that today; in fact, the blockade has had quite the opposite impact on our business to the one intended.”
National carrier Qatar Airways has had a record-breaking year in 2017, as the airline claimed more global awards than ever before in its 20th year of operations.
The national carrier received more than 50 individual awards across multiple categories since January, demonstrating its continued commitment to exceeding passenger expectations with its innovative approach to product development and dedication to customer experience.
A multiple award-winning airline, Qatar Airways was named ‘Airline of the Year’ by the 2017 World Airline Awards, managed by international air transport rating organisation Skytrax. It was also named ‘World’s Best Business Class,’ ‘Best Airline in the Middle East,’ and ‘World’s Best First Class Airline Lounge.’
