State-run company Qatar Petroleum (QP) is among the top five international firms leading in the field of Health Safety, and Environment, according to an HSE expert who delivered the keynote address of the 2018 Qatar Process Safety Symposium held in Doha on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the two-day event, Dr. Ali Al-Mulla, the assistant secretary general for Industrial Projects Sector of the Gulf Organisation for Industrial Consulting (Goic), said Qatar has taken “great strides” in maintaining high HSE standards across all industries.“In Qatar, major industries such as QP have kept an excellent track HSE record, which is why it is ranked among the top five global companies leading in the field of Health, Safety and Environment,” pointed out Al-Mulla, who served QP for 12 years as director of Central Administration of Health, Safety and Environment before joining Goic.
Similarly, Al-Mulla said due to stringent policies and collaboration between the public and private sector, Qatar’s downstream industry has also recorded milestones in the field of HSE.
In a speech, Texas A&M University at Qatar dean Dr. Cesar Malave, who noted that process safety “is a fundamental value in industry in Qatar,” emphasised that the symposium, and through the work of the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Centre (MKOPSC), supports industry professionals and students, and create new knowledge in this field of study.
Malave said MKOPSC’s expert faculty and staff researchers are supporting “a deep and comprehensive treatment” to safety through all employee sectors and to all practitioners.
“Industry, academia, and government organisations must work together to develop scientific solutions that have an impact on the work around us…and I hope that this year’s symposium will continue that tradition and serve as a platform to foster future collaboration, research, and knowledge sharing. Together, we will make safety second nature in Qatar and worldwide,” Malave said.
