The Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration (Qicca) has announced that it will develop legislations to cope with recent trends in the field of arbitration.
Speaking at the opening of the two-day ‘3rd International Arbitration Conference’ yesterday, Qicca board member Sheikh Dr Thani bin Ali al-Thani said the move reflects the efforts to raise Qatar’s status as “a leading beacon” for arbitration globally and to become a leader in all international legal forums.
Sheikh Thani said the conference will clarify a number of recommendations to guide arbitrators in the Arab world.
He said Qatar is the first country in the world to organise a conference commemorating the 60th anniversary of Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards, also known as New York Convention.
“Academic entities and arbitration centres in other countries will follow suit and organise similar programmes in the upcoming months,” he pointed out.
Sheikh Thani said the conference is “a high-level legal intellectual meeting” that focuses on the Qatari Arbitration law issued a year ago.
“This is a new start that keeps abreast with modern legislations in the arbitration field to increase its use, provided that it is managed in a developed and speedy manner.
This aims to achieve swift justice in line with the needs of economic entities to overcome challenges they may face in running their trade and financial activities under the principle of rule of law and considerations of public order,” Sheikh Thani said.
International arbitrator and founder and editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Arbitration Dr Abdel Hamid el-Ahdab said he values the issuance of the new Qatari arbitration law and called for its “effective implementation through homogenising it with the judiciary and exerting more efforts to spread the culture of arbitration in traditional judiciary and courts mediums until its role integrates with what legislators put in place with regards to modern legislative theories that need special attention.”
“Qatar has been a pioneer in the field of arbitration in the Arab world and has been a pioneer in the field of spreading freedom and the other opinion in the region, as it occupies a prominent position at various levels, including the legislative and legal level, especially in the field of arbitration,” he added.
