Demand for outdoor sports gear, particularly fishing equipment, continues to increase as the weather becomes more favourable for such activities, it is learnt.
“In the previous years, shoppers usually looked for running shoes, jerseys, or bicycles as temperatures started to drop. But this time, a lot of them are asking for fishing rods and other accessories,” an employee of a leading sports chain in Doha told Gulf Times.
Due to the surge in demand, the sports chain ran out of stocks a few weeks ago and hopes new items will arrive soon.
According to the employee, fishing serves as a hobby and a unique and exciting way to spend the weekend beyond the usual mall visits or having a lunch or dinner at restaurants.
“Some of our customers tell us that such ‘endeavour is a cool and better alternative’ than just watching TV at home or going elsewhere,” he said.
Apart from fishing equipment, the employee also noted an increasing demand for bicycles and cycling accessories, sport apparel, running shoes, tennis racquets and accessories, skateboards and long boards regardless of the prices.
“Prices of bicycles range between QR1,799 and QR19,000.”
“This means they also have to fix and tune up their bicycles before competing while others prefer to sell their old units and buy new ones,” he noted. He said the series of weekend rides, competitions and races open to all nationalities in the country have been attracting many cyclists, as well as enthusiasts, to participate. These include those organised by Qatar Chain Reaction and the United Filipino Mountain Bikers Qatar, and the Qatar Cycling Federation.
It is learnt that recent bicycle activities and events, including the opening of the Outdoor Leisure Trail at Doha Festival City, received good turnout of enthusiasts. The fitness equipment on the Doha Corniche and in several public parks have also proved popular among residents who want to exercise and shed extra calories.
