A "one-of-its-kind" concert featuring a collection of songs from various genres enthralled a large number of Qatar residents at the Grand Ballroom of Gondolania, Villaggio, on Friday.
The free concert, titled ‘Fusion – A Musical Celebration’ by Tanghalang Overseas Pinoy (TOPi), a non-profit Filipino theatre group based in Doha, was organised in partnership with the Philippine embassy in Qatar to promote the performing arts and Philippine culture to Qatar.
TOPi performed Broadway musical plays such as Jekyll & Hide, Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera; Disney musical songs such as Frozen (Love is an open door), Hercules, Mulan and Tangled (I see the light); and original Filipino musicals, which saw the crowd and the young at heart enjoying the show.
The audience also enjoyed excerpts from many original Filipino musicals created by award-winning musicians and lyricists such as Alikabok, Katy! The Musical and Noli Me Tangere.
“It was full of fun and was an enchanting musical evening, filled with songs that captivated our hearts,” said TOPi president Bryan Ricafrente, lauding members of TOPi who “all have great passion for the performing arts and with a high regard for community service”.
Members of various Filipino organisations in the country, led by the United Filipino Organisations in Qatar, and guests watched the show.
According to Ricafrente, the event is a promotional concert for an upcoming musical play titled ‘Scenes from Stage,’ scheduled on September 2 at City Centre Rotana Doha.
He said part of the proceeds from the show will be used to help distressed overseas Filipino workers, in co-ordination with the United Filipino Organisations in Qatar and supported by the Alliance of Filipino Journalists in Qatar.
TOPi is open for auditions for aspiring members and is composed of Filipino expatriates in Qatar who take great interest in theatre.
It was established and accredited by the Philippine embassy in Doha on August 12, 2005.
