Students at primary and middle schools in Doha have been benefitting from a healthy food and nutrition awareness programme aimed at educating students about healthy nutrition in a lively and interesting way.

The campaign is organised by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), in partnership with the Qatar Culinary Professionals (QCP), in the run-up to the eighth Qatar International Food Festival (QIFF), which will take place from March 29 to April 8 at the Hotel Park.

In a statement, QTA said QCP members, including chefs from the Armenian-Lebanese restaurant Mamig and local vegan restauranteur Ghanem al-Sulaiti, are helping students distinguish between healthy and unhealthy foods, and understand the benefits and harms of each.

The chefs visit various schools and prepare nutritious and tasty snacks in front of the students, helping them gain a visual understanding of where food comes from and an appreciation of healthy alternatives to common snacks.

Meanwhile, QTA said the festival this year will also focus on promoting a healthy lifestyle besides from showcasing a diverse range of local and international cuisine.

“It is also our pleasure to co-operate with the local cooking chefs and talents, which is vital in promoting the country as a tourist destination and making our offerings to be more authentic,” QTA’s public relations and communication director Saif al-Kuwari said.

He thanked the participating embassies in Doha who will present their cuisine and feature cultural performances for the first time at the 11-day annual festival.

“This will reflect on QIFF’s cultural diversity, which showcases Qatar’s warm hospitality and its rich cultural heritage to visitors,” al-Kuwari added.

QIFF 2017, organised in partnership with Katara Hospitality, is a multicultural festival that celebrates Qatar’s diverse food, beverage and hospitality offerings in scenic outdoor spaces. It attracted more than 200,000 visitors last year and expects to exceed this record this year.

QTA also partnered with the Doha Film Institute, Jeem TV, Qatar Foundation, and Qatar University Culinary Club to feature several cultural performances and educational entertainment at the festival this year.

Foodex, a B2B exhibition slated to run from April 2 to 4 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, is also a QIFF partner showcasing the business side of food, tracing a meal’s journey from farm to fork.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to experience unique dining with garden picnics; dinner in the sky (seven times daily); high tea/fine dining lounge; and food stalls, trolleys and trucks.
