The Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) on Wednesday opened the doors of the Ooredoo Cancer Awareness Centre, a first of its kind in the Middle East, for training and education about the disease.
The centre was opened jointly by QCS chairman Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Jabor al-Thani and Ooredoo Group CEO Sheikh Saud bin Nasser al-Thani in the presence of a large number of officials from both the organisations.
The opening ceremony was also attended by several leading officials including Sheikh Dr. Mohamed bin Hamad al-Thani, director of public health at the Ministry of Public Health, as well as a number of senior officials from other health facilities in the country.
The centre, at the Barwa Towers in Al Sadd, occupies the top four floors of Tower 2. The 18th and 19th floors will be used for training, the 20th floor for the administrative staff while the top floor has the offices of the chairman and other officials.
The Ooredoo Cancer Awareness Centre aims to educate the community about cancer-related issues, including information relating to prevention, risks, examination, treatment, palliative care and surviving the disease.
Ooredoo and Qatar Cancer Society pledged in 2014 to build a new state-of-the-art cancer awareness centre, with Ooredoo supporting QCS not only in the construction of the centre, but also funding for the facility for a further five years in an agreement worth QR 30mn.
The Ooredoo Cancer Awareness Centre will become an important part of Qatar’s community by offering educational programmes, awareness lectures, and support for all age groups in the community such as students from schools and university, people with special needs, government and private sector employees, cancer survivors, healthcare providers inside and outside Qatar, in addition to cancer patients and their caregivers.
Sheikh Khalid said that the state-of-the-art facility is truly the meeting point for the two sides. "Alongside our expertise in healthcare and education, Ooredoo has provided the latest technology to help spread the message and ensure it’s heard. This facility is for everyone in Qatar.”
“The centre will implement an awareness strategy to help change the mindset of the people about cancer and reduce the stigma associated with the disease, and it will also help increase the quality of life by increasing awareness about healthy and safe lifestyle to prevent cancer,” he added.
Waleed Mohamed Ebrahim al-Sayed, CEO, Ooredoo Qatar, hoped the Ooredoo Cancer Awareness Centre will raise awareness about the disease and help dispel fears associated with it.
The centre will help in the prevention and early detection of cancer, dispel fears and misconceptions about cancer, empower healthy lifestyle culture, train volunteers to deliver cancer awareness to the community as well as support and care for cancer patients and their caregiver.
