Barbecue grills and charcoal, portable stoves and tents are among the items now on display at different branches of major hypermarkets and supermarkets in the country.
Speaking to Gulf Times, a merchandiser said many residents have been buying such items since last month in anticipation of the camping season and beach activities.
He noted that the sales of such ‘seasonal items’, including folding chairs and tables, tents of various sizes and sleeping bags, among others, increase during this period.
“Apart from food, people also see to it they have the necessary accessories and supplies to cook it,” he added. “Emergency rechargeable lamps and batteries, coolers, water kettles, tumblers and disposable plates and paper cups are all included on their list.”
Hypermarkets and supermarkets have allotted dedicated and prominent sections for these items.
Another merchandiser of a known hypermarket said they continued to receive an increasing number of customers who looked for camping items and swimming gear, as well as fishing accessories.
The weekends since the start of October have seen a growing number of individuals and groups throng the beaches of Mesaieed, Wakrah, Dukhan and Al Khor, which are also popular for fishing and crabbing.
The Wakrah family beach remains a favourite destination for many families, especially during the weekend, because of its proximity to Doha as well as the various amenities it offers to visitors such as shades, parking lots, toilets and a playground for children.
Some of these facilities are not available in the open beach area in Mesaieed, a reason for residents to buy and put up tents in the area.
The public beach at Sealine is another popular destination and the place also has other attractions such as sand dunes and camel rides, which attract residents from different parts of the country.
While a number of camping equipment seemed to be costly for some residents, the merchandiser said demand was still high.
“You will see members of a group, for example, who are planning for a beach activity share the cost,” the merchandiser said. “They usually don’t turn back and leave without the item.”
During the colder months, outlets expect the demand for items such as heaters, jackets, sleeping mattress and bags to increase. But the number of beachgoers normally decreases during that period.
