Citing the success of Bayt Qatar in Rio De Janeiro, the Brazilian embassy in Doha expressed confidence that co-operation in the field of sports between the two countries will continuously grow.
The Olympic hospitality house, Bayt Qatar,  will showcase Qatar’s culture, heritage and passion for sport throughout the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
“Of all the countries that were given the opportunity to establish ‘national houses,’ Qatar is the one that made the most of it. It is being highly successful in promoting the country,” Charge d’Affaires Joao Carlos Belloc told Gulf Times.
He said Qatar’s pavilion in Rio at the Olympic Games has been attracting a large number of visitors daily, which was beyond the host country’s expectations.
The envoy believes Qatar has a huge presence in Brazil, which represents a commitment “to the legacy of the games” and “a solemn expression on the relationship between the two countries.”
“We are thankful for the legacy Qatar will leave for Rio de Janeiro: the reform of a historical building, a library for municipal school students, and scholarship for underprivileged athletes,” Belloc added.
The embassy also thanked the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) for illuminating the Aspire Tower with the Brazilian colours on the 100-day countdown of the Olympics and on the eve of the opening ceremony.
Prior to the Rio games, the embassy granted some 150 Olympic-related visas for Qataris. Around 120 people come from various organisations and companies who are involved in official missions or activities related to the Bayt Qatar.
During the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Belloc recounted that the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy sent the largest foreign observation delegation with the intent of learning from the Brazilian experience in organising the event.
“According to the feedback we got, the mission was invaluable to help Qatar plan the 2022 World Cup,” he said.
The Charge d’Affaires noted that a significant part of the Brazilian community in Qatar is involved in football.
“We have not only players, but also coaches, physical therapists, trainers, etc. Our expertise help elevates the quality of Qatari football, and we hope we can make a contribution to make the Qatari national team competitive in 2022,” he added. “Sports is one of the main links between Brazil and Qatar.”
He also recounted that former Brazilian president Lula da Silva, during his 2010 visit to Doha, signed an agreement in the field of sport.
“During the Joint Committee, both the QOC and Aspire will be represented, so we hope projects in the field of sports can be launched,” Belloc said.
The embassy is looking forward for a high level meeting with Ministers early next year to sign various agreements of co-operation.
