The Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva participated on Friday in organizing a side event entitled "The Next Generation of Humanity: Youth Leadership in International Humanitarian Law" in cooperation with the Permanent Missions of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Federative Republic of Brazil to the United Nations in Geneva, as well as QatarDebate Center. The event was held on the sidelines of the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva and was attended by representatives of diplomatic missions, international and regional organizations, civil society organizations, and stakeholders involved in international humanitarian law, youth empowerment, and peacebuilding. Speaking on the occasion, HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah stressed that addressing existing gaps in the implementation of international humanitarian law requires renewed political commitment and collective action. Her Excellency emphasized that states bear the primary responsibility for respecting and ensuring respect for international humanitarian law. HE Dr. Al Muftah further underlined the importance of a collective role for the international community-particularly the United Nations, humanitarian organizations, civil society, and regional actors-in promoting compliance with international humanitarian law, supporting accountability mechanisms, facilitating humanitarian access, and enhancing the protection of civilians in situations of armed conflict. She reaffirmed Qatar's steadfast commitment to advancing respect for international humanitarian law and supporting its implementation at the national, regional, and international levels. In this regard, she noted that the State of Qatar currently serves as co-chair of the third workstream on International Humanitarian Law and Peace under the International Committee of the Red Cross' Global Initiative.Her Excellency also highlighted the unanimous adoption by the Human Rights Council in October 2025 of the resolution entitled "Promoting and Protecting the Human Rights of Women and Children in and after Conflict: Ensuring Justice, Remedies and Reparation for Victims," jointly presented by the State of Qatar and the Republic of Costa Rica. She noted that the initiative reflects a shared commitment to strengthening protection, accountability, and access to justice for victims of armed conflict.The event featured remarks by Permanent Representative of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Akram Al Harahsheh;  Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations Office in Geneva Tovar da Silva Nunes; Anne Quintin of the International Committee of the Red Cross; Managing and Strategic Director of QatarDebate Center Abdulrahman Al Subaie; and Ali Khaled Al Mawlawi of QatarDebate Center. The discussion was moderated by Sheikha Noor Mohammed Al Thani of QatarDebate Center. The event was organized amid continuing challenges related to the implementation of international humanitarian law in contemporary conflicts. It aimed to promote greater respect for the rules and principles of international humanitarian law, address persistent implementation gaps, and highlight the role of young people in raising awareness of humanitarian principles and fostering a culture of respect for international humanitarian law.
