Ministry of Environment hosts symposium on air quality and sustainability

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, represented by the Environmental Monitoring and Inspection Department, organised a symposium Sunday entitled "Improving Air Quality and Supporting Environmental Sustainability in Qatar," bringing together government officials, industry representatives, researchers, and environmental experts.The event was attended by His Excellency the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie and featured broad participation from governmental, private, research and academic institutions specialising in air quality and environmental monitoring.**media[417514]**The symposium reviewed national efforts to monitor and enhance air quality, highlighted the latest technologies and best practices in environmental monitoring, and strengthened co-operation and knowledge exchange among stakeholders. The initiative aligns with the Ministry's strategy to advance environmental sustainability in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.Undersecretary of the Ministry Engineer Abdulaziz bin Ahmad al-Mahmoud affirmed that air quality remains a national priority due to its direct impact on public health and quality of life.He noted that the Ministry continues to develop and modernise its environmental monitoring systems using advanced technologies and internationally recognised standards, within a comprehensive legal framework that promotes transparency and sound environmental governance.He described the symposium as a national platform for exchanging expertise among government entities, research centres and the industrial sector, particularly amid escalating climate challenges. He emphasised the importance of co-ordinated efforts to safeguard the environment and preserve natural resources.He added that the Ministry is advancing quality-driven initiatives aimed at enhancing the efficiency of the environmental monitoring system, updating air quality standards, and strengthening partnerships across sectors.Al-Mahmoud also pointed out that Qatar's environmental monitoring framework operates in accordance with Environmental Protection Law No. (30) of 2002 and its implementing regulations, ensuring compliance with national and international standards.He stressed that the Ministry's ambition extends beyond improving environmental performance indicators to fostering a safe and healthy environment in which development and sustainability are fully integrated, thereby meeting the aspirations of future generations.For his part, Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs Yousef Ibrahim al-Hamar said the symposium serves as a strategic national forum to discuss initiatives aimed at protecting the environment and enhancing air quality — a cornerstone of sustainable development in Qatar.He highlighted the Ministry's commitment to raising public awareness by making environmental data accessible in a transparent and simplified manner, enabling individuals to understand air quality indicators and their health implications. This, he noted, contributes to promoting responsible environmental behaviour.Al-Hamar explained that the Air Quality Index serves as a key communication tool linking scientific data to the community, using a colour-coded system to indicate pollution levels and assist the public — particularly vulnerable groups — in making informed daily decisions.He further underscored the Ministry's efforts to build national capacity through continuous training, knowledge transfer, and collaboration with research institutions, strengthening technical expertise in environmental monitoring and analysis. These efforts support Qatar's active participation in regional and international environmental initiatives and reporting frameworks.The symposium addressed a range of technical topics, including air quality data monitoring and analysis, clean energy monitoring and associated challenges, low-concentration dust measurement, facility-boundary monitoring, combustion gas monitoring, and quality assurance in environmental measurements.The programme also featured a presentation on a joint research project between the Ministry and the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University.The event also honoured several partners of the National Air Quality Monitoring Network in recognition of their contributions to environmental monitoring and data analysis, as well as their role in strengthening public-private sector collaboration.The Ministry operates the National Air Quality Monitoring Network, which comprises more than 45 fixed and mobile stations across the country. Operating around the clock, the network monitors over 30 environmental variables using advanced technologies, ensuring compliance with national and international standards while promoting public awareness and a culture of environmental sustainability.

UDST hosts 9th edition of International Symposium on Bioinformatics 2025

University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) successfully hosted the 9th International Symposium on Bioinformatics (InSyB 2025), a prestigious flagship event of the Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNET), one of the oldest and most prominent regional networks promoting bioinformatics in the Asia-Pacific.The symposium, in partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation, aimed to advance bioinformatics capacity and collaboration in Qatar and the region through a dynamic program of thematic sessions, workshops, and expert panels.InSyB 2025 brought together leading scientists, researchers, and educators from across Qatar, the GCC, and beyond to exchange knowledge and explore emerging developments in computational biology, genomics, health informatics, and artificial intelligence.The event also served as a platform to highlight Qatar's growing bioinformatics ecosystem and the pivotal role of UDST's Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics in supporting the nation's research and innovation goals.Aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, InSyB 2025 echoed UDST's commitment to nurturing a knowledge-based economy through applied research, innovation, and education. The symposium supported local and regional capacity-building, encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration, and provided opportunities for students and early-career researchers to engage with global experts in the field.Reflecting on the occasion, UDST President Dr. Salem Al Naemi said: "At UDST, we believe that bioinformatics holds the key to transformative progress in healthcare, environmental sustainability, and biotechnology. Hosting InSyB 2025 reinforced our mission to advance applied research and empower the next generation of scientists and innovators who will drive discovery and development in Qatar and beyond."The symposium was organized in collaboration with the Centre for Clinical Precision Medicine and Genomics, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and the APBioNET, highlighting UDST's strong partnerships in advancing applied research and scientific innovation.

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attends Qatar-Germany cooperation symposium

His Excellency Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Qatar Committee for the Alliance of Civilizations Dr. Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi participated in the symposium "Building Bridges: Qatar and Germany in Dialogue for Tolerance, Peace, and Solidarity," held at the Arab Culture House (Divan) of the Embassy of the State of Qatar in the Federal Republic of Germany. The symposium was attended by Michael Müller, a member of the German Parliament and former Mayor of Berlin, and a group of intellectuals, professors, and those interested in the dialogue of civilizations from both Qatar and Germany. In a speech during the event, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Qatar Committee for the Alliance of Civilizations said that the State of Qatar regards dialogue among civilizations as an indispensable mechanism for building bridges of communication between societies and peoples, getting to know each other, promoting mutual respect, and achieving international stability and peace. His Excellency highlighted the importance of this symposium, which focuses on building bridges of cooperation between the State of Qatar and the Federal Republic of Germany, promoting the values of coexistence and human solidarity, and spreading a culture of peace and non-violence — especially since both countries contribute, through national and international humanitarian institutions, to supporting the efforts of the international community in the field of human development and in consolidating stability in countries emerging from conflicts and wars On the sidelines of the symposium, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Qatar Committee for the Alliance of Civilizations announced the launch of the fifth edition of the Qatar Global Award for Dialogue Among Civilizations 2025-2026, under the title: The role of youth in achieving civilizational advancement and promoting human communication. It is in cooperation with the ICESCO Chair in Alliance of Civilizations at the Qatar University's College of Sharia and Islamic Studies.
