The annual sessions of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) hold special significance, as member states discuss critical global issues and adopt necessary decisions, in addition to making recommendations on issues regarding international peace and security, human rights, sustainable development, and other issues of mutual interest.Given the importance of this global event, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani is keen to attend the annual sessions of the UNGA, using every speech to reaffirm the State of Qatar's steadfast and principled positions regarding its responsibilities and commitment to its duties, as well as the country's solidarity with the international community in pursuit of international peace and security, sustainable development, and a life of dignity and well-being for all peoples, in addition to the country's dedication to fostering international cooperation and working collaboratively to find solutions to global challenges.In this context, the speech delivered by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Tuesday at the opening session of the 81st session of the UNGA held in New York, was comprehensive and thorough, given the highly important messages it contained concerning international affairs and global and regional challenges, as well as His Highness's vision of how to find effective solutions to them for a more stable, secure and just world, in light with the UN Charter. His Highness the Amir also reaffirmed the constants of Qatar's foreign policy and its approach to dealing with the world's issues and crises, as well as the need to resolve and overcome them through dialogue and political and diplomatic solutions.In exclusive statements to Qatar News Agency (QNA), several newspaper editors-in-chief and political analysts said that the speech delivered by His Highness the Amir before the 81st session of UNGA, was comprehensive in its coverage of Qatar's constants and the regional position. They highlighted His Highness's warning that time does not resolve lingering conflicts in the absence of a just settlement; rather, it redoubles their costs, considering the current crises as a cumulative result of years of postponement, crisis management through temporary solutions, and unrealistic policies.Editor-in-Chief of Al-Raya newspaper, Taleb al-Marri, told QNA that His Highness the Amir's speech embodied a firmly established Qatari approach based on combining the protection of national sovereignty with openness to dialogue and peaceful solution.Al-Marri noted that His Highness the Amir affirmed in his speech that, resilience is the outcome of prior planning, preparedness and investment in people and national capabilities, adding that it also comes from assessing risks, securing supply chains, strengthening the capabilities of the national institutions, developing strategic reserves, and forging trusted international partnerships.His Highness indicated that, through its role as a trusted mediator and peace facilitator, the State of Qatar has consistently warned that time does not resolve lingering conflicts in the absence of a just settlement, but rather redoubles their costs.His Highness the Amir's speech carried a clear message about the urgent need to address the region's crises through a collective approach based on dialogue, negotiation, and respect for the interests of its countries, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Raya said, noting that His Highness linked the current situation to the absence of a regional system of collective security — one that respects the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of states, promotes the peaceful settlement of disputes, and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.From this standpoint, His Highness the Amir said that the crisis in the Gulf can be resolved through diplomatic means by reopening the Strait of Hormuz to maritime navigation and returning to negotiations, pointing out that the significance of this message lies in emphasising that security in the Gulf cannot be achieved through a logic of winner and loser, but rather through collective arrangements that safeguard the interests of the countries of the region, prevent interference in their affairs, and create room for co-operation and development.He said that the presence of the Palestinian cause in His Highness the Amir's speeches affirms that it remains at the forefront of Qatar's foreign policy priorities, and among the foremost issues on which it maintains a steadfast position based on supporting the rights of the Palestinian people and rejecting violations of those rights.His Highness the Amir emphasised that what is happening in Gaza is a genocide in every sense of the word, and a stain of shame on the conscience of humanity as a whole, holding the international community responsible for taking action to stop the catastrophe and protect civilians.In this context, he noted that the high-level speech reaffirmed Qatar's continued mediation efforts to consolidate the ceasefire in Gaza and move toward lasting peace, alongside calls for an end to operations, withdrawal, the lifting of the blockade, and the entry of humanitarian aid, adding that this reflects the consistency of Qatar's position between diplomatic action, humanitarian work, and the defence of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international references.Al-Marri addressed the strong partnership between Qatar and the UN, which was emphasised in His Highness the Amir's speech, pointing out that it represents an important framework for co-ordinating efforts in the areas of peace, development, humanitarian action, and human rights.He also stressed the particular importance of this partnership in light of the role Qatar plays in mediation, facilitating dialogue, and responding to humanitarian crises, thereby enabling international expertise and relations to be harnessed in support of peaceful solutions. He pointed to His Highness the Amir's affirmation that the expansion of the United Nations House in Doha is an extension of this longstanding partnership and enhances the international organisations's ability to carry out its mission in the service of peace, development, and human rights.Qatar's hosting of international initiatives and events reflects an approach toward expanding avenues for multilateral co-operation, strengthening dialogue among states and peoples, and supporting efforts aimed at building a more stable and cooperative world, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Raya added.Editor-in-Chief of Al Sharq newspaper Jaber Salem al-Harami told QNA that His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani's participation in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly is of paramount importance, given the multitude of ongoing global issues and crises, as well as the solutions and visions that His Highness presents in his speeches.It is in this context that His Highness the Amir is keen to participate in the annual UN General Assembly sessions and address the world from the highest international platform, he noted.Eagerly awaited, the speeches of His Highness command great attention, as they diagnose regional crises and propose solutions to vital issues regarding the concerns of the world and its peoples, al-Harami continued, with His Highness addressing the security tensions and major shocks currently affecting the Gulf region and the world, particularly regarding supply chains, energy security, and waterways, all critical matters.The Editor-in-Chief of Al Sharq newspaper emphasised that the State of Qatar is an active player in the United Nations, believing in dialogue, the need to uphold international law, and adhere to the principles of the international organisation.For his part, Editor-in-Chief of Al Watan newspaper Mohammed Haji told QNA that His Highness the Amir's speech before the UN General Assembly set out a roadmap for overcoming regional and international crises.The speech also reaffirmed the State of Qatar's national principles, particularly protecting sovereignty and defending the nation and its interests, he said.His Highness the Amir's speech, Haji added, carried significant political and strategic security dimensions, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in overcoming global crises and the need to uphold multilateral collective action when addressing challenges through sustainable, rather than temporary, solutions.In this regard, His Highness pointed to the tensions currently prevailing in the Gulf region and the need to adopt firm positions to overcome them, including the issue of the Strait of Hormuz, which poses a threat to supply chains, energy security and maritime routes, the Editor-in-Chief of Al Watan newspaper noted.Haji highlighted that the speech did not overlook the concerns and causes of the Arab nation, offering explanations and perspectives for resolving the crises facing a number of Arab countries, foremost among them the situation in the Gaza Strip and the just cause of the Palestinian people, which Qatar and His Highness the Amir personally accord the utmost attention and care.Also speaking to QNA, Director General of the Qatar Press Center Sadiq Mohammed al-Emari said that His Highness the Amir clearly articulated the State of Qatar's position regarding the crises facing the world and the region, as well as ways of resolving them sustainably through dialogue and diplomacy.Al-Emari highlighted how His Highness the Amir's speech reaffirmed the State of Qatar's view that temporary solutions to crises and problems cannot produce satisfactory outcomes, but lasting solutions do, and that the delay in reaching a swift and satisfactory solution to the Strait of Hormuz crisis had exacerbated the problem, particularly as the strait is of concern to the entire world and not only to the countries of the region.The speech noted that any threat to close the strait would not only jeopardise oil and gas exports and products, but would also threaten food supply chains, fertilisers, petrochemicals, other food sources, and the raw materials used in the manufacture of electronic chips, underscored the Director General of the Qatar Press Center.His Highness the Amir's speech unequivocally reaffirmed the State of Qatar's steadfast positions in support of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, in a reflection of Doha's commitment to the issues affecting the Arab and Islamic worlds, al-Emari noted, adding that the speech clearly exposed Israel's brutal and repressive practices against the people of Gaza and Palestinians in general, as well as its failure to comply with UN resolutions and international law.The Director General of the Qatar Press Center said that His Highness the Amir's speech also shed light on the suffering of brotherly peoples in a number of Arab countries, including Sudan and Yemen, while calling for greater attention to and support for the new Syria.For her part, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Qatar University Dr Nafja Sabbah al-Kuwari told QNA that, through its participation in the successive annual sessions of the UN General Assembly, the State of Qatar seeks to strengthen its international presence and activate its relations with various partners.His Highness the Amir's participation in the current UN General Assembly session comes at a particularly turbulent time for the world and the region, Dr al-Kuwari said.The solutions and forward-looking visions put forward by His Highness undoubtedly contribute to reaching understandings and common ground among conflicting parties, while providing a clear assessment of all these challenges in accordance with a strategic Qatari vision that focuses on development, peace, partnerships, and national principles, she added.The Assistant Professor of Political Science at Qatar University noted that the UN General Assembly is not merely a platform for delivering speeches, rather it provides an arena for diplomatic engagement and strengthening international presence, which is precisely the State of Qatar's approach, activating its traditional partnerships and fostering new ones both regionally and globally, particularly in the political, security, military and economic spheres.The State of Qatar's high-level participation in the various annual sessions of the UN General Assembly reflects the Qatari foreign policy's approach, which is based on strengthening multilateral relations and engaging directly with international issues, she said.For his part, Senior Researcher at Al Jazeera Center for Studies Dr Liqaa Maki told QNA that His Highness the Amir's speech at the UN Tuesday was clear and concise in presenting Qatar's firm and resolute position on the region's principled issues, foremost among them the just cause of the Palestinian people and the situation in the Gaza Strip.Qatar is not only a supporter and advocate of the rights of the Palestinian people, Dr Maki affirmed, it is also a mediator seeking to end the war in Gaza, with Doha being fully aware of Israeli violations, which His Highness the Amir clearly highlighted in his speech, presenting them concisely and accurately, thereby, placing the international community before its responsibilities regarding what is taking place in Gaza.The international community's recognition and appreciation of the State of Qatar's role as a trusted international mediator is thanks to Doha's extensive experience and expertise in the field, as demonstrated by its successful efforts and mediation initiatives in resolving crises in the region and around the world, he noted.His Highness the Amir's speech addressed the ongoing US-Iranian war and the need for de-escalation and ensuring equal rights for all parties and states, particularly with regard to international navigation, respect for international law and preventing any state from infringing upon the rights of others, the Senior Researcher at Al Jazeera Center for Studies said.The speech, he added, stressed the importance of peaceful solutions, noting that any rapprochement on these issues and crises between the US and Iran would be the result of successful Qatari mediation.Dr Maki pointed out that His Highness the Amir's speech Tuesday addressed multiple issues and dimensions, in addition to touching on numerous matters related to peace, development, and the economy.These represent practical and field-tested Qatari principles that have been implemented transparently, which together reflect His Highness's far-sighted vision of regional developments, he said.All those who spoke to QNA, agreed that His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani's speeches before the UN General Assembly's successive sessions served as roadmaps to a more stable, secure, just and prosperous world despite unprecedented challenges.They stressed that such challenges require concerted efforts, respect for states' sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a shared commitment to resolving conflicts through peaceful means.

The Al Jazeera Centre for Studies has published a new book, Qatari Women and Sustainable Development: An Analysis of Roles and Institutional Frameworks, by Dr Al Anoud Ahmed al-Thani, offering an in-depth examination of the pivotal role of Qatari women in the country’s sustainable development journey.  The publication presents a comprehensive analytical perspective on the evolving position of women in Qatar, exploring the social, economic and institutional dimensions that have shaped their growing contribution amid the country’s rapid modernisation and development.  The book traces the evolution of Qatari women’s roles across education, the labour market, institutional participation and civic engagement, highlighting the dynamic relationship between public policy and social transformation.  It also examines how these changes have reshaped patterns of participation within Qatari society.  A dedicated section explores gender as an analytical framework for understanding the distribution of social roles within Qatar’s cultural and value-based context.  Commenting on the publication, Qatari journalist and writer Moza Abdulaziz al-Ishaq told Gulf Times: “Qatari society has witnessed a remarkable and complementary partnership between men and women, creating genuine added value for the nation.”  “Today, Qatari women occupy senior leadership positions across the public and private sectors, excel in entrepreneurship, and have emerged as transformative forces in politics, international diplomacy, academia, scientific research, medicine and sport,” she said.  “As a writer and journalist, I take great pride in this important publication, which once again highlights the intellectual and cultural achievements of Qatari women,” al-Ishaq said.  “Through a rigorous academic and methodological approach, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of women’s roles across all sectors of society, demonstrating how their contributions have driven social transformation alongside Qatar’s economic renaissance,” she added. “It also underscores the central role of women in advancing the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 in partnership with every segment of society.”  The book argues that Qatar’s experience is distinguished by its ability to strike a balance between the demands of modern development and the preservation of social cohesion and cultural identity.  It attributes this success to development policies centred on investing in human capital, strengthening community participation, advancing education, and enhancing institutional capacity.  Combining theoretical perspectives on gender and sustainable development with an evidence-based analysis of Qatar’s policy landscape, the study examines the institutional frameworks that have enabled women’s increasing participation across diverse sectors.  Supported by statistical data and key development indicators, the book offers a nuanced account of the profound transformation of Qatari women’s roles over recent decades and their growing contribution to the nation’s sustainable development agenda.

Qatar Chamber held the Sustainable Development Goals Ambassadors Forum Wednesday, in cooperation with Regional Network Consultancy, a member of the Regional Network for Social Responsibility, and the SDG Ambassadors Centre.The forum brought together some 40 students from the SDG Ambassadors programme. The opening was attended by Hussein Yousef al-Abdulghani, director of Administrative and Financial Affairs at Qatar Chamber; Dr Ali Abdullah al-Ibrahim, director general of Regional Network Consultancy; Al Anoud Zayed al-Mohannadi, director of Member Affairs at Qatar Chamber; Fatima al-Kuwari, head of Training at Qatar Chamber; and Iman al-Obaidli, executive director of the SDG Ambassadors Centre.During the forum, participants were introduced to the importance of sustainable development and environmental conservation. They also learned about Qatar Chamber’s efforts in this field, as well as the initiatives, events and training programmes it organises to promote the Sustainable Development Goals among private-sector companies.Participants were also briefed on the role of the Regional Network Consultancy in raising awareness of sustainable development.Al-Abdulghani affirmed that Qatar Chamber places great importance on sustainable development, considering it a fundamental pillar for achieving balanced economic growth, preserving resources and supporting the prosperity of society for current and future generations.He noted that the chamber is committed to encouraging private-sector institutions to adopt sustainable practices and supporting initiatives that combine economic development, social responsibility and environmental protection, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.He also stressed the importance of educating younger generations about sustainable development concepts and instilling in them the values of environmental conservation, responsible consumption and innovation, enabling them to contribute effectively to building a more sustainable and prosperous future.Al-Ibrahim delivered a workshop titled ‘The Sustainable Development Goals: Concept, Historical Development and the Role of SDG Ambassadors in Achieving Them’.The workshop aimed to introduce participants to the evolution of the concept of sustainable development from its inception through to the adoption of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, while highlighting their importance in achieving balanced economic, social and environmental development.It also shed light on the pivotal role played by SDG Ambassadors in promoting a culture of sustainability, strengthening community partnerships, encouraging impactful initiatives and contributing to the localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals within institutions and communities, in support of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda.During the workshop, al-Ibrahim stressed that the success of sustainable development requires the integration of efforts by governments, the private sector, civil society organizations, academic institutions and individuals, who are all key partners in shaping a more sustainable and prosperous future for present and future generations.Two SDG Ambassadors, Aisha Hassan al-Kuwari and Ibrahim al-Naimi, were awarded the honorary title of ‘Child Ambassador for Social Responsibility’ by the Regional Network for Social Responsibility, in recognition of their prominent role in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals at the national level.

The State of Qatar participated in the opening of the 2026 Annual Meetings of the Islamic Development Bank Group inaugurated by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.  Qatar was represented at the opening of the meetings by His Excellency the Minister of Finance Ali bin Ahmed al-Kuwari. The meetings are being held in Baku on 16 -19 June 2026, under the slogan "Regional Integration for Sustainable Prosperity," and witnessed wide participation from representatives of member states and international development partners.  Participants discussed ways to enhance sustainable development and economic integration. Qatar's participation comes as part of its commitment to supporting development cooperation with member states and contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals.  HE al-Kuwari also attended the first and second plenary sessions within the framework of the annual meetings of the Group, where the sessions discussed a number of priority issues for member states, including strengthening development and economic cooperation, supporting the stability of the Islamic financial system, developing innovative financing tools, as well as exploring ways to enhance integration among member states and expand partnerships with regional and international financial institutions in a manner that supports development efforts and economic growth.

The Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) hosted a student delegation from various schools and educational levels as part of efforts to promote alternative dispute resolution. The visits, organised by the centre, in co-operation with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Ambassadors Centre, included a comprehensive introductory programme during which the centre’s experts delivered awareness lectures on the nature of arbitration and its importance as a modern means of dispute resolution, in addition to reviewing its fundamentals and most prominent applications in Qatar. It also organised a practical simulation of a real arbitration session, in which students participated in different roles, with the aim of familiarising them with the mechanisms of arbitration sessions and the roles of arbitrators, lawyers, and disputing parties. Ibrahim Shahbek, secretary general of QICCA, stressed that the initiative comes within a broader national strategy aimed at spreading the culture of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution methods within Qatari society and among younger generations, thereby contributing to strengthening the rule of law and enhancing the country’s business environment. In turn, the participating students and accompanying supervisors expressed their appreciation for this interactive experience, praising the importance of enhancing legal awareness among young people and linking theoretical knowledge with practical application in the fields of arbitration and dispute resolution. 

Qatar participated in the 2026 Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) Green and Sustainable Development Forum, held on April 28-30 in Ningbo, China. Qatar’s delegation was led by Qatar’s Consul General in Shanghai Rashid bin Mubarak al-Khater.

Under the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Qatar announced the provision of development and humanitarian support to Lebanon, totalling $434,248,000, benefiting more than 1.5mn people through the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and in co-ordination with the relevant Lebanese authorities.The support includes a contribution of up to $400mn to support the energy sector, of which 10% has been allocated as a grant.It further extends to several vital sectors, including education through the provision of scholarships, strengthening the capacities of the Lebanese Armed Forces through the provision of vehicles and equipment, in addition to supporting the sports sector, contributing to youth empowerment.Her Excellency the Minister of State for International Co-operation Dr Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser al-Misnad, who is also the and Vice Chairperson of the QFFD Board of Directors, stated: “This support reflects Qatar’s commitment to standing in solidarity with the brotherly Lebanese people and supporting their resilience, while fulfilling its humanitarian and development responsibilities toward brotherly nations and reinforcing the foundations of stability, peace and sustainable development.” 

The population of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries is projected to rise from around 61.5mn in 2024 to approximately 83.6mn by 2050, marking an increase of more than 22mn people over the next quarter century, according to the latest Population Indicators Report issued by the Gulf Statistical Center (GCC-STAT). The Muscat-based centre said population growth across the region is expected to continue steadily between 2025 and 2050, driven by economic expansion, labour demand and demographic dynamics. The report also anticipates a gradual shift in population structure, with the number of people aged 65 and above projected to more than double, exceeding 5.5mn by mid-century. By the end of 2024, the GCC’s total population had grown by 8.5mn compared with 2019, translating into an average annual growth rate of 2.8%, nearly three times the global average. This underscores the sustained pace of demographic expansion in the Gulf region. Within this broader GCC framework, Qatar continues to reflect many of the demographic characteristics highlighted in the report, including a strong working-age base and high levels of urbanisation. Qatar’s population is currently estimated at just over 3.1mn, with long-term projections indicating continued steady growth in line with economic activity and labour-market demand. The country’s demographic profile is marked by a dominant working-age population, which constitutes the large majority of residents, supporting Qatar’s position as a dynamic labour market in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, services, logistics and healthcare. The GCC-STAT report shows that region-wide, the working-age population (15–64 years) accounts for 76.7% of total population, while children aged 0–14 represent 20.6%, and the elderly population 2.6%. This results in a total dependency ratio of around 30 dependents per 100 working-age individuals, a structure that continues to shape economic and social planning across the region. A key long-term trend identified in the report is population ageing. Across the GCC, the number of elderly people (65+) is expected to more than double by 2050. While this group currently represents a small share of the population, rising life expectancy and improved healthcare outcomes are contributing to a gradual demographic transition. GCC-STAT noted that ongoing population expansion and structural changes underline the importance of long-term policy planning in areas such as urban development, healthcare systems, labour markets and social protection. These themes align with broader development strategies across GCC states, including Qatar’s continued focus on sustainable development, human capital and infrastructure planning. The report highlights how the region’s youthful and economically active population base remains a defining feature of the Gulf’s demographic landscape, while gradual structural changes are shaping future planning priorities.

Participants at the 4th Private Sector Social Responsibility and Its Role in Sustainable Development Conference have adopted the Doha Declaration 2026, outlining a long-term roadmap to align business profitability with sustainability and social impact.The two-day conference, hosted by the Qatar Chamber, concluded on Thursday with recommendations focusing on unified standards for corporate social responsibility (CSR), stronger governance of global value chains, and increased investment in innovation, digital transformation and green finance.The declaration calls for the adoption of a unified professional classification for CSR, proposing the Arab CSR Index as a regional benchmark. It also urges family-owned businesses to embed environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices into their operations and to support initiatives promoting digital education, community health, women's empowerment, youth engagement and social entrepreneurship.Participants highlighted the importance of investing in artificial intelligence and green technologies to improve efficiency and reduce carbon footprints. The conference also recommended launching an International Observatory for Sustainability and Social Responsibility, alongside professional exchange and twinning programs aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and spreading a culture of social responsibility among younger generations.A key theme of the conference was the shift away from traditional charity-based CSR towards an integrated ESG-driven model aligned with international sustainability standards, seen as essential for long-term business resilience and economic competitiveness in the Arab world.The Doha Declaration 2026 also emphasised humanitarian solidarity, calling for the creation of joint Arab funds and initiatives to support research and development and digital entrepreneurship.Conference participants described social responsibility as a strategic pillar of good governance, arguing that the private sector plays a central role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and in building trust between businesses and society.Organised jointly by the Qatar Chamber, the Union of Arab Chambers, the League of Arab States, the Regional Network Consultancy and the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the conference began on Wednesday and brought together business leaders, policymakers and international partners.Organisers said the declaration represents a collective commitment to translating the conference's vision into practical policies, laying the foundations for what they described as a new social contract that balances growth with sustainability and equity for future generations. 

The fourth edition of the ‘Private Sector Social Responsibility and Its Role in Sustainable Development’ conference kicked off in Doha Wednesday.The two-day event, hosted by Qatar Chamber at its Lusail headquarters, in collaboration with the Union of Arab Chambers, the League of Arab States, the Regional Network Consultancy, and the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), gathered officials, experts, and representatives of regional and international organisations.The conference aims to highlight the growing role of the private sector, particularly family businesses, in promoting social responsibility and integrating sustainability principles into corporate strategies, in line with sustainable development goals.It also provides a platform for dialogue, exchange of expertise, and the presentation of best practices that contribute to enhancing the social, economic, and environmental impact of private sector institutions in the Arab region.In his remarks, Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani emphasised that private sector social responsibility has become a strategic pillar of good governance, enhancing competitiveness and building trust with society, stressing the pivotal role of the private sector as a key partner in achieving sustainable development.He also noted that the selection of this year’s conference theme, ‘Mechanisms for Integrating Sustainability and Social Responsibility Principles in Arab Family Businesses’, underscores the pivotal role of family businesses in Arab economies and their vital contribution to achieving a balance between economic growth, social responsibility, and long-term sustainability.Sheikh Khalifa highlighted the vital role of Arab family businesses in balancing economic growth with social responsibility and long-term sustainability, affirming the importance of adopting sound governance practices, strategic planning, transparency, innovation, and investing in young leadership to ensure business continuity across generations.His Excellency the Minister of State Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kawari, who is also chairman of the Qatar National Library and International Ambassador for Social Responsibility, emphasised that integrating sustainability and social responsibility into Arab family businesses is essential for achieving comprehensive social development and building more cohesive and sustainable economies.He commended Qatar Chamber’s strategic role in stimulating the national economy and driving growth in Qatar, thanks to its efforts in linking business sectors and promoting the Qatari private sector’s presence on the international stage.He noted that social responsibility has evolved from seasonal initiatives into a core component of corporate governance, underscoring that the long-term sustainability of family businesses relies on sound governance, transparency, alignment with sustainable development goals, investment in human capital, and support for innovation.Dr Khaled Hanafy, the secretary general of the Union of Arab Chambers, said the conference serves as a model of commitment to social responsibility through its keenness to embrace initiatives that support this vital area. He said family businesses constitute a large proportion of the private sector, which represents nearly 75% of the Arab economy.Tarek el-Nabulsi, Minister Plenipotentiary and director of the Development and Social Policies Department at the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs, stressed the vital role of the private sector in adopting social responsibility as a key partner in the development process, emphasising the League of Arab States’ support for the conference’s recommendations, which will be submitted to the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs.Dr Hashim Sulaiman Hussein, head of Bahrain’s Investment and Technology Promotion Office at UNIDO, said family businesses are a key pillar in the economies of Arab countries, providing job opportunities and contributing to increasing the GDP.Professor Yousef Abdul Ghaffar, chairman of the Regional Network for CSR, said the Arab private sector, especially family businesses, constitutes a fundamental pillar in supporting Arab economies, enhancing social stability, and achieving sustainable development.Qatar Chamber acting general manager Ali Bu Sharbak al-Mansouri stressed that hosting the event stems from the chamber’s firm belief in the importance of social responsibility and the pivotal role played by Arab family businesses in supporting national economies and community institutions, as well as in achieving sustainable development.
