A pioneering knee surgery on a 12-year-old girl has been successfully performed by Dr Mahesh Reddy Vuruvakili, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Kimshealth Qatar, a statement said. The child was diagnosed with a discoid meniscus, a condition where the cushion in the knee joint (meniscus) is shaped abnormally like a disc instead of a crescent. This rare problem, found in only about 1-5% of children, can cause pain, swelling, knee locking and difficulty walking. Dr Mahesh Reddy performed saucerization and repair saucerization of the meniscus, in which the meniscus was reshaped to a normal size instead of being removed. This modern approach helps protect the knee joint and prevents early arthritis in young patients.Preserving the meniscus allows for quicker recovery and helps prevent early arthritis, which is especially important for young patients,” said Dr Mahesh Reddy, a specialist in shoulder and knee surgeries. The child has made a smooth recovery and is now back to her sports activities, the statement added.
