China's Yin wins in Shanghai for back-to-back LPGA titles

Home hero Yin Ruoning celebrated back-to-back LPGA Tour titles with a thrilling one-stroke victory in Shanghai on Sunday. China's Yin carded a final-round four-under-par 68 at an energised Sheshan Golf Club to emerge victorious from a showdown with overnight leader Choi Hye-jin. The 24-year-old Yin, winner at the FM Championship in Boston in August on her previous start on tour, finished on 11-under, one shot clear of Choi. It was Yin's seventh LPGA title and her second in Shanghai, having won the event in 2024. "I think this tournament means everything to me because you have the chance to play in front of all your family and friends and in front of all the amazing fans," she said."It's just amazing." South Korea's Choi was left kicking herself, having been in the lead after all three previous rounds and seemingly on course for her maiden LPGA crown. She started the final day with a two-shot advantage over Yin but successive bogeys at the seventh and eighth saw her lead evaporate. Roared on by the home fans, Yin was on the charge, four of her five birdies coming in her last nine holes.She sank a nerveless putt for birdie on the 17th that effectively sealed the deal, and marked victory with a low-key pump of the fists. "I mean, I still have emotions, but this time very calm, more calm than FM," she said, comparing her understated celebration this time with her jubilant win two months ago."I think it's a dream come true to win at home, and I think I'm lucky to win it twice. "I hope this is just the beginning." South Korea's Amy Yang was third on eight-under, with Japan's Rio Takeda another shot back.

Schauffele closes in on leaders after 'weird' round in Japan

Double major winner Xander Schauffele moved four shots off the lead in Japan after carding two eagles and a double bogey on "a weird day" at the US PGA Tour's Baycurrent Classic on Saturday. Defending champion Schauffele heads into Sunday's final day with a shot at retaining his title after carding a 6-under-par 65 to finish the third round 9-under overall. The American had a roller-coaster front nine in sunny conditions in Yokohama, starting with a bogey before holing two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 fourth. Schauffele followed that up with a double bogey on the next hole before sinking another eagle on the par-5 sixth, and went on to card four more birdies and another bogey to finish the round."It was a weird day," said Schauffele, who won Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021. "It was a lot of good, honestly some really bad in there as well."But overall, if someone told me I was going to shoot 65, I'd probably take it." Michael Brennan, Zach Bauchou and Jacob Bridgeman lead the field heading into the final day on 13-under par.Bridgeman is looking for his third win on the tour this year. The trio hold a one-stroke lead over a chasing pack that includes Australia's Adam Scott.Japan's Hideki Matsuyama is eight shots off the lead after a mixed day when he shot a 2-under-par 69. Matsuyama, the 2021 champion in Japan, started like a freight train, rattling in four birdies and an eagle on the first seven holes.He ran into serious trouble on the back nine, though, carding five bogeys and only one more birdie to undo much of his good work."It was a mix of great golf and the worst golf," said 2021 Masters champion Matsuyama. "But it wasn't that I played absolutely terribly on the back nine. "It was little things, so I just need to make some small adjustments to make sure that doesn't happen again tomorrow." Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth was six shots off the lead after shooting a 3-under-par 68 to finish 7-under overall. Spieth is looking for his first win on the tour since April 2022. Collin Morikawa, the 2023 champion in Japan, was on 4-under overall.

Bartunkova thrashes Muchova to reach China Open semi-finals

World number 34 Nikola Bartunkova stunned her Czech compatriot Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-0 at the China Open on Thursday to breeze into the semi-finals.The 20-year-old sealed the win in just 66 minutes and will play either Mirra Andreeva or Ekaterina Alexandrova in the next round.Bartunkova won five consecutive games in 19 minutes in the first set as her seventh-seeded opponent struggled to respond.Muchova saved five set points but it was not enough to hold back Bartunkova, who had already ousted second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka from the tournament in Beijing.She raced into to another five-game lead in the second set and gave Muchova no chance of a reprieve, forcing her into firing long to seal a win she described as a "dream come true"."Honestly I don't know. It was (an) unbelievable match," Bartunkova said on court."She's a great player and also a great human being."It was a really tough match today, but I was just trying to put my best tennis, and I did it."Andreeva and Alexandrova were due to play each other later on Thursday in an all-Russian affair.

Messi says Argentina retirement is 'saddest day of my career'

Lionel Messi described his retirement from international football as the "saddest day of my career" on Tuesday after playing his final game for Argentina in a 3-0 defeat of Benin.Messi, who scored a goal and provided two assists in the victory at the Monumental Stadium, took to the field after the win to express gratitude to fans and team-mates as he reflected on his 21-year career with Argentina. "It was a huge source of pride for me to defend this jersey for more than 20 years," Messi told the stadium. "Even in the worst moments we went through and that I had, I never stopped fighting, never stopped being here. "Not coming anymore is going to be deeply painful. I swear I'd like to play for the rest of my life, because playing for the Argentina national team is the most beautiful thing that can happen to you."Messi said that returning to the Monumental -- where Argentina played their first game after winning the 2022 World Cup -- was bittersweet. **media[500605]** "Now I'm here on the saddest day of my career, which is the day I have to say goodbye to the national team, goodbye to all of you. "But now I'll be on that side (with the fans), supporting all the boys, everyone who comes in. Always united," he said. Messi though said that despite the sadness, he had no regrets about the timing of his international exit, citing the exertions of Argentina's campaign at this year's World Cup, where the South Americans battled through to the final only to lose to Spain. Messi said the emotional roller coaster of that tournament -- which included a 2-1 defeat of bitter rivals England in the semi-final -- had taken a toll."Even though I want to be here all my life, I feel that this is the moment. The last World Cup was too much, everything I had to live through," said Messi."We had the dream of fulfilling my dream and the dream of the whole country, of becoming world champions again. **media[500607]** "In the last World Cup we were very close, and the reality is that nothing strange happened, as people say. The match against England took a huge toll on us physically, and emotionally it was very big. "We arrived with just enough, we fought like we always did with this jersey, with all the teammates I got to be with and share things with, not only them but also those who were around in the time when we managed to win. We were very close."

Tom Kim finishes marathon Asian Games second round under floodlights

Tom Kim probably didn't have floodlit golf on his Asian Games to-do list in Nagoya this week, but that is exactly what he ended up playing at the end of a marathon second round on Thursday.Presidents Cup player Kim, defending gold medallist Taichi Kho from Hong Kong and Japan's Keita Nakajima teed off in the final men's group at 12:35pm. Play slowed to a crawl as soft fairways meant players could lift and clean their balls on every shot, while others in groups ahead were getting into trouble and causing further hold-ups on the tight tree-lined Kasugai Country Club course. The final group's round took a mammoth five hours and 20 minutes to complete, taking them past the local sunset at 5:38 pm. It forced some drastic action from organisers to get the round finished, with temporary floodlights brought in alongside the final green so the trio could still putt out in almost total darkness.Kim tapped in for a par four with the help of the electric candlepower to complete a round of four-under 66 to stand in a share of fifth place with South Korean teammate Mun Do-yeob on seven-under par. Nakajima rolled in a birdie three at the last for a 66 of his own and enjoyed the unusual finish, saying it might have even brought him a little good fortune."It was fun," said Nakajima. "I made a good birdie. I had no birdies on the back nine until then." Wang Wei-hsuan of Taiwan (66) and Deng Wenyi of China (64) share the halfway lead at nine-under par.Japan pair Nakajima and Kazuki Higa (67) are joint third on eight-under. Hong Kong's Kho could only shoot an even-par 70 and is on one-under as his dream of back-to-back golds begins to fade. Singapore's Shannon Tan continues to lead the women's event and is on 13-under par after a six-under 64 added her to her opening round 63.She is two clear of former world number one Yin Ruoning of China and South Korea's Yang Yun-seo.

Ocon to leave Haas at end of F1 season

Esteban Ocon will leave Haas at the end of the Formula One season, the racer and his team said Wednesday, following a difficult campaign for the Frenchman. The 30-year-old joined the American outfit from Alpine ahead of the 2025 campaign, teaming up with British rookie Oliver Bearman.Speculation about his departure had mounted in recent months as he complained about his car and hinted that his teammate was treated better. Ocon plans to stay in the sport."My time with Haas F1 Team will come to an end at the end of the 2026 season," Ocon posted on X. "I leave this project with my head held high and proud of my performances in what were not always the easiest of circumstances for various reasons and factors outside of my control."My immediate focus is the next race weekend. I will continue to work hard with the team, maximise every opportunity, and keep extracting every bit of performance from the car."I am still motivated. I am still hungry. This is absolutely not the end of my Formula 1 career." Haas did not say who would replace him.Ocon currently sits 16th in the drivers' standings with seven points, three places behind Bearman.The Frenchman has scored 12 points finishes across 39 grands prix with Haas, his best fifth place in China last year. He won the Hungary GP with Alpine in 2021.His announcement came ahead of the rescheduled Bahrain GP, which will take place on Sunday in Malaysia due to the war in the Middle East.

Opener John Campbell hit 101 to lay the foundations for West Indies' highest-ever one-day international total of 405-7 against India in their second match on Wednesday. Skipper Shai Hope (104) and Amir Jangoo (114) also struck centuries to boost the total as West Indies look to bounce back in the three-match series, led by India 1-0, in Guwahati.Invited to bat first, West Indies lost Keacy Carter for nine before Campbell and Hope put on 110 runs to set the tone for the batting domination. West Indies' previous ODI best was 389 against England in 2019, but they ended up losing the match. Campbell reached his second ODI hundred but in the next over fell to pace bowler Gurnoor Brar after the opener hit nine fours and five sixes in 68-ball knock.Hope and left-handed Jangoo put on 182 runs for the third wicket as the pair hammered the opposition attack with regular boundaries on a batting-friendly pitch.Hope, a wicketkeeper-batter, raised his 20th ODI ton to go past West Indies legend Brian Lara's 19 hundreds. Chris Gayle has the most ODI centuries for West Indies with 25 tons.Jangoo reached his second ODI hundred off 70 balls, leaping up and punching the air in delight. West Indies lost three quick wickets including Hope, Sherfane Rutherford -- out for a first-ball duck -- and then Jangoo, dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja.Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav struck twice to reach 200 ODI wickets before Roston Chase with his unbeaten 29 took West Indies past 400. India will need a record chase, one surpassing their ODI best of 362 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.

Wemby ready for NBA Spurs to move rivals in climb to top

Victor Wembanyama said he still struggles to sleep sometimes following San Antonio's loss to New York in June's NBA Finals, but the French superstar predicts the Spurs will be tougher this season. "We're fighting for the top spot of the mountain," Wembanyama said on Monday. "We're going to have to move people in our way." The 7-foot-4 (2.24m) center reached his first NBA Finals in only his third season since being selected first overall in the NBA Draft, but the Spurs fell to the Knicks in five games. "I couldn't imagine better motivation," Wembanyama said. "We're in a great spot, very hopeful, very ambitious and ready."We won the West last year and we don't want to do anything less this year. We want to be the first seed and we want to keep fighting for the top spot."Wembanyama said there remains an emotional toll from the heartbreak. "We have to go through some emotions and some of that you have to go through alone," said Wembanyama. "Hard to find sleep sometimes, hard emotions."There's a just a point where you accept that you have to go through it and feel all of it. We're going to face these emotions, face the reality that we have 100 games to play." "Wemby" was last season's NBA Defensive Player of the Year and led the league in blocked shots for a third consecutive season.The 22-year-old Frenchman said he felt the Spurs' 22-game playoff run last season made him better. "It feels like going through something of great magnitude," he said. "I never played so many games or so many minutes. We still pushed through it."I'm in better shape than I could have expected right now just off experiences and growing." Wembanyama is prepared to be the hunted among NBA clubs instead of chasing other favored clubs."It feels like we're in our place. It feels normal," said Wembanyama. "There are high expectations around us. We will play each team at their best every night. No one will be surprised by our performances now."Wembanyama averaged NBA career highs of 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds last season as well as 3.5 assists, 3.1 blocked shots and 1.1 steals a game for the Spurs.

Alcaraz helps Europe into Laver Cup lead

Carlos Alcaraz helped Europe take a 3-1 lead on the first day of the Laver Cup as the Spaniard teamed up with Jakub Mensik for a doubles victory.The world number three, playing in only his second event since a four-month injury lay-off, impressed the watching Rod Laver and Roger Federer as he and Mensik defeated Alexander Bublik and Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4. Alcaraz plans to play fewer events going forward, blaming an "impossible" tennis calendar for a rising number of injuries in the sport.But the seven-time Grand Slam champion said before the competition that his "love" for team events helps him "bring my joy back on the court, bring my joy back on playing tennis."He and Mensik were all smiles as just one break of serve sufficed in each set to earn an opening day lead. Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, the reigning French and US Open champion, were both kept in reserve by European captain Yannick Noah earlier on Friday.Casper Ruud earned the first point of the tournament by edging out Francisco Cerundolo 10-8 in a deciding tie-break. Brandon Nakashima responded for Team World, also edging out Mensik in a tie-break after the first two sets were shared.Rising Spanish star Rafael Jodar was more convincing on his Laver Cup debut with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bublik.The first side to 13 points will be crowned winners of the three-day event at London's O2. Each match is worth one point on Friday, two on Saturday and three on Sunday.

Schoolgirl Yu, 13, fastest again in bid for third Asian Games gold

China's 13-year-old swimmer Yu Zidi went fastest in the heats as she closes in on a hat-trick of Asian Games golds on Wednesday -- and her team-mates say her stunning success is no longer a surprise.Yu has already won two golds in Tokyo in Games-record times and will go for a third title in the women's 400m individual medley after posting the fastest time in qualifying with 4min 39.43sec. The schoolgirl has been the talk of swimming since becoming the youngest medallist in world championships history last year with bronze for China's relay team aged just 12.She is shaping up to be a major medal threat at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Team-mate Zhang Yufei, a multiple Olympic gold medallist and world champion who was named the women's MVP of the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, said nothing Yu does is shocking any more."Everyone is thinking, 'Wow, what will her next result be? What will she do in her next competition?'," said Zhang, now 28."Expectations have become bigger than surprise. I hope she can withstand that pressure." Yu controlled her 400m IM heat from start to finish and topped qualifying 0.36sec ahead of Japan's Mio Narita.Yu has already won the 200m butterfly and 200m IM events this week. Zhang, who won the 10th Asian Games gold of her career this week with China's 4x100m freestyle relay team, said she was "quite shocked" when Yu first burst onto the scene."I only see her at the domestic trials and major international competitions each year," said Zhang."But every time I see her compete, I can see that she has improved again, and that makes me very happy."Yu's success at the Asian Games has caused a sensation back home in China. Her back story, such as being spotted by chance by a swimming coach at a water park, and her struggle with interviews, has gone viral.Zhang believes Yu has the potential to become the standard-bearer of Chinese swimming. "I hope this young girl can continue to maintain this momentum and give Chinese swimming hope," she said."We also want to see just how far she can go in the future."
