Qatar's Ministry of Sports and Youth has honoured the winners of the first edition of the State Sports Day Award, recognising government bodies, private institutions and individuals for their contributions to promoting physical activity and community sport.The award ceremony was held ahead of the State Sports Day 2026 celebrations and was attended by His Excellency Minister of Sports and Youth Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani. Also attending were His Excellency Minister of State for Interior Affairs Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Faisal al-Thani, and His Excellency Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, Yasser bin Abdullah al-Jamal, along with senior officials.The event recognised national institutions for their sustained initiatives to promote public health and encourage physical activity within workplaces and communities, supporting Qatar's long-term vision of building a healthy and active society.The Ministry of Interior won first place in the institutional category, followed by the University of Doha for Science and Technology in second place, and Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development in third.Individual awards were also presented across several categories. Yousuf al-Muftah won the over-60 category after participating in 16 running events in 2025. Hassan al-Marikhi won the men's category with participation in 27 community sports events, while Kholoud Aqeel received the women's award after taking part in 31 activities during the year.In the children's category, Ghanem al-Nabet was honored for recording the highest number of participations, with 26 sports activities.Awards were also presented for the highest number of steps recorded through the Qatar Sports for All Federation app. Hamad al-Marri won the men's category after maintaining an average of more than 10,000 steps per day throughout 2025, while Nour Mohammed won the women's category for achieving the same daily average.Speaking at the event, Abdulrahman bin Mussallam al-Dosari, Chairman of the State Sports Day Committee and President of the Qatar Sports for All Federation, said the awards reflected growing institutional and community commitment to making sport a daily habit rather than a once-a-year activity.He added that State Sports Day has evolved into a national platform for promoting healthy lifestyles, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. 

Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah will be bidding for a record-breaking 19th victory from 26 starts when this weekend’s Qatar International Rally gets underway from the Lusail Sports Complex Thursday afternoon. The in-form Qatari began his challenge for an unprecedented 21st FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) title with victory in Oman two weeks ago and has now switched his attention to securing a staggering 93rd career MERC rally win on the three-day event being hosted by the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF). Al-Attiyah and co-driver Candido Carrera top a 23-car field with strength in depth and will be looking to start their weekend’s campaign with a strategic performance on the new Qualifying Stage Thursday. This will determine the starting order for Friday’s opening special stage. The outcome of the Qualifying Stage will be the deciding factor to which of the Rally2 crews opens the road, acts as a road sweeper and faces the slight disadvantage of clearing loose sand and gravel off the racing line. In the past, the leader of the championship has opened the road regardless and al-Attiyah may well be able to take advantage of the new addition to the regulations to strengthen his challenge in an Autotek Skoda Fabia RS. Abdullah al-Rawahi is back from serious injury and pushed al-Attiyah hard in his native Oman last month. Punctures ultimately dropped him to second place and out of victory contention, but the Omani is better prepared for this rally and is hopeful that he has a good set-up on his Skoda Fabia RS to apply the pressure on al-Attiyah from the outset. The former regional champion teams up with Jordanian co-driver Ata al-Hmoud. Local driver Abdulaziz al-Kuwari was not present at the opening round but stayed in match fitness with a strong performance at last weekend’s Saudi Baja. He teams up with his brother Nasser in a Skoda Fabia RS and will be striving for the podium on a rally he won in 2012. This will only be the third special stage rally in Hamza Bakhashab’s short career but the Saudi showed in Oman that he has the pace to reach the podium. He admitted at the press conference on Tuesday evening that working efficiently with accurate pace notes had cost him dearly at the opening round when he crashed out of third place, but he and Irish co-driver Lorcan Moore are determined to come back even stronger this weekend in their Jameel Motorsport Toyota GR Yaris Rally2. Engine issues sidelined Mohammed al-Marri in Oman but the QMMF-backed driver has switched to a Citroën C3 this weekend and will make his debut in the Rally2 class with Frenchman Pierre Delorme reading his pace notes. Veteran Nasser Khalifa al-Atya began his 2026 campaign with a podium finish in Oman, as he tries to retain the FIA Master Driver trophy he won last season. The Qatari again teams up with Lebanese co-driver Ziad Chebab in a Motortune-run Ford Fiesta. Jweihan aims to extend his FIA MERC2 advantageShaker Jweihan was the class of the MERC2 field at round one with his fellow Jordanian co-driver Mustafa Juma and the youngster is determined to maintain the momentum in Qatar. “We have made a strong start to the season and, yes, the goal is to keep it going and push for another win,” said the Mitsubishi driver. His closest rivals in Oman were the Kuwaiti duo of Jassim al-Muqahwi and Sulaiman al-Helal, who finished fifth overall and picked up points for second in MERC2. Jordan’s Sami Fleifel was third and he teams up with Yazan Juma to continue his push for MERC2 honours. A cruel retirement cost Oman’s Zakariya al-Aamri (Subaru) valuable points on round one but he will be hoping to be in the mix with navigator Mohammed al-Mazrui on Qatar’s abrasive gravel terrain. Further MERC2 competition comes from the Indian duo of Mohamed Mansoor Parol and Lenin Joseph and Lebanon’s Charbel Chebly and Carlos Hanna in a pair of Mitsubishis. Rashid al-Muhannadi and Gary McElhinney are the defending FIA MERC4 champions, but their title defence ground to a halt with engine issues in Oman. The QMMF-backed Qatari will be looking to bounce back strongly with a category win this weekend, although he faces strong competition from a quartet of Qatari drivers in similar Peugeot 208 Rally4s and the Indian duo of Payyaakkal Panikkaveettil and Musa Sherif in a Ford Fiesta. The QMMF has offered support to Ahmed al-Kuwari, Nouef al-Sowaidi, Khalifa Saleh al-Attiyah and Ahmad Shaheen al-Muhannadi to boost the flagship two-wheel drive category. They have teamed up with their respective co-drivers, Baptiste Cerrato, Aisvydas Paliukenas, Laos Savvas and Taha al-Zadjali. The Lebanese pairing of Shadi El Fakih and Joseph Kmeid wheel out their Rally5 Renault Clio at the rear of the field behind four SSVs that are also eligible for the regional rally championship. Mohammed al-Atteya and Mirko Carrara drive a pair of Can-Ams and Christiano Gabbarrini and Mario Marotta wheel out two Yamaha YXZ 1000Rs built by Quaddy Racing. Thursday’s competitive timetable opens with a 75-minute practice session through a new 5.56km special for Rally2 cars at Al Khor from 10.00hrs. This will also act as the new qualifying stage for Rally2 crews, starting at 11.45hrs. The result of that will determine the starting order for leg one. The slowest driver in the qualifying stage will run as the first Rally2 entrant on the road Friday. Non-Rally2 machines will be permitted a maximum of two passes apiece during a shakedown on the Al Khor stage from 12.30hrs until 14.15hrs. The ceremonial start will then take centre stage adjacent to the service park in the grounds of the Lusail Sports Complex. 

Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD) will once again serve as a central destination for Qatar National Sport Day (QNSD) on February 10, hosting an extensive programme of sports, fitness, and wellness activities across its pedestrian network and public spaces. The city will activate multiple zones starting from 8am, offering diverse experiences for families, youth, and visitors of all fitness levels. As Qatar’s leading smart and walkable city district, MDD is strategically positioned to deliver comprehensive Sport Day programming through its connected pedestrian network, diverse public spaces, hospitality cluster, and retail ecosystem. Last year’s QNSD attracted 70,000 visitors to MDD, demonstrating strong community engagement and sustained on-ground participation. Building on this success, this year’s programme expands both the scale and diversity of activities available to participants. The 2026 Sport Day activations will span key locations including Barahat Msheireb, Sikkat Wadi Msheireb, Sahat Wadi Msheireb, and Sahat Al Nakheel. Activities will include sports and fitness zones, gamified challenges, circuits and activities for all ages, mini sports for children, movement and recovery stations, nutrition booths, and community health activations. Vodafone Qatar will activate Barahat Msheireb with its Sports Village, offering a curated selection of sports-related activities. The Al Emadi Group will create an activation zone at Sahat Al Nakheel, featuring sport challenges designed for all ages and fitness levels. The day of wellness continues into the evening with the wellness club’s Grand Launch at 6:30pm, welcoming the community to discover the club’s state-of-the-art facilities and experience its distinctive second-space concept, designed to flawlessly combine activity, relaxation, and connection. Msheireb Properties will operate multiple activation zones across the city, beginning with a dedicated area at Sahat Wadi Msheireb from 7am exclusively for employees and their families, before opening to the public from 9am. Additional zones will be activated at Sikkat Wadi Msheireb, offering gamified sports experiences and activities accessible to participants across all skill levels. Dr Hafiz Ali Abdulla, senior director of Corporate Communication at Msheireb Properties, said: “Qatar National Sport Day represents an important opportunity to showcase how Msheireb Downtown Doha serves as more than a destination — it functions as an active platform for community engagement and national initiatives.” The event emphasises MDD’s role as a destination that supports Qatar National Vision 2030’s health and wellness objectives. The city’s shaded walkways and interconnected public spaces enable safe, accessible participation in physical activities for residents and visitors. All activities are free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to arrive early and explore the various zones across MDD throughout the day.

The spotlight turns today to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, which is hosting the General Assembly meeting of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). During the meeting, the leadership of OCA, the continental sports body behemoth, will be handed over to the State of Qatar, represented by His Excellency the President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, ushering in a new era of development for Asian sports. Taking on the mantle of OCA’s hierarchical leadership, HE Sheikh Joaan is set to herald a new phase of prosperity for this long-standing Asian sports institution, based on an ambitious Qatari strategy that aims to achieve sustainable development through the organisation of state-of-the-art green sporting events, as well as digital transformation that broadly bets on integrating AI and cutting-edge technologies in athletes’ performances and sports facilities management. The Qatari presidency will mark the culmination of OCA’s pathway, which was established 77 years ago. Its headquarters is located in the State of Kuwait. Interestingly, the establishment of this council was the product of a long odyssey to advance Asian sports, starting with the creation of the Asian Games Federation and culminating in the formation of OCA, the largest continental sports body. This was achieved through two historic phases that shaped the contours of the sporting landscape across the largest continent in the world. The idea of organising alternative Asian Games, replacing the previous Far Eastern and West Asian Games, was proposed by the Indian Guru Dutt Sondhi, then President of the Indian Olympic Committee. Subsequently, the Asian Games Federation was founded on Feb 13, 1949, during a meeting held at Patiala House in New Delhi, India. The sublimest objective of this federation was to unify Asian athletes under one banner, and it discharged its responsibility of organising the Asian Games since their first edition in 1951. The Federation undertook this role for over three decades. With the need to advance the organisational structure and keep abreast of growing sports ambitions, a decision was taken to dissolve the federation, especially following the emergence of feuds and standoffs among the member states, triggering the urgent need for a sports authority with greater powers capable of controlling the Asian sports arena. The OCA was officially established on Nov 16, 1982, during the 9th Asian Games in New Delhi, becoming the sole legitimate representative of Asian National Olympic Committees. It comprises 45 member countries and organisations and is responsible for overseeing sport in Asia and co-ordinating member activities on both regional and global stages. Its mandate extends beyond the Asian Games to include the Asian Winter Games, with both events held every four years. Since its establishment, OCA has been spearheaded by key sports figures who shaped the course of Asian sport and strengthened Asia’s standing within the international Olympic movement. History records the late Kuwaiti Sheikh Fahad al-Ahmed al-Sabah as the spiritual founder of the Council, having led the transition from the Asian Games Federation to the OCA. As the first President, he laid strong institutional foundations and selected Kuwait as the permanent headquarters until his death in 1990. Following the passing of Sheikh Fahad al-Ahmed al-Sabah, Roy de Silva of Sri Lanka assumed the role of Acting President of OCA during a transitional period from 1990 to 1991, playing a vital role in maintaining OCA’s cohesion and ensuring the continuity of its activities amid one of the region’s most challenging political crises. He was succeeded by Sheikh Ahmed al-Fahad al-Sabah of Kuwait, who served as President of OCA from 1991 to 2021, marking the longest and most influential presidency in the Council’s history. During his three-decade tenure, OCA evolved into a major continental sports institution, with the launch of the Asian Indoor Games, Asian Winter Games, and Asian Beach Games, alongside strengthened Asian influence within the International Olympic Committee. In September 2021, Sheikh Ahmed stepped down, and Randhir Singh of India assumed the position of Acting President. Although Sheikh Talal Fahad al-Ahmed al-Sabah was elected President in July 2023, Singh remained Acting President following the Executive Board’s endorsement of the IOC Ethics and Compliance Commission’s recommendation to annul the 2023 election results. In September 2024, Randhir Singh was elected President of OCA for a four-year term, becoming the first Indian to hold the post. However, due to health issues, he chose not to complete his term, prompting the opening of nominations for an early presidential election on July 15, 2025, for which HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani emerged as the sole candidate, making his assumption of the presidency a matter of time. During its 77-year-long journey, OCA has proven day after day its role as a powerful driving force for Asian sports, committing itself to strengthening Olympic values and providing a fair and motivating competitive environment for millions of Asian athletes. 

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development, is set to host the 2nd GCC Women’s Sports Tournament for Universities and Higher Education Institutions from February 6 to 11, 2026.Sponsored by the Ministry of Sports and Youth and hosted for the first time in the State of Qatar, the tournament seeks to strengthen cooperation among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, while also contributing to the regional development of women’s university sports.By bringing together universities and higher education institutions from across the GCC, HBKU is advancing its role as an advocate for regional cooperation, knowledge exchange, and collaborative institutional partnership. Leveraging world-class infrastructure, the tournament advances the University’s academic mission beyond the classroom, reinforcing student development and well-being as core pillars of higher education.Competition takes place across seven venues, six within Education City and one at Qatar University, with the opening ceremony on February 7, 2026, at Al Shaqab’s Longine Indoor Arena. Around 450 female students representing 16 of the region’s universities and higher education institutions will compete across eight sports: football, volleyball, basketball, padel, table tennis, badminton, athletics, with fencing making its first appearance at the tournament.The tournament’s draw ceremony is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m at Education City Stadium. Attendees will include heads of the technical committees from the relevant federations, representatives from participating universities, and members of the supervisory committee.Commenting on the competition, Dr. Maryam Hamad Al-Mannai, Vice President for Student Affairs, HBKU, and Chair of the tournament’s Supreme Organizing Committee, stated: “Hosting this event reflects the University’s academic and societal mission. It is not solely a sporting occasion, but a complementary experience that brings together sport, education, and culture, while highlighting the role of women in our societies. We are working with various stakeholders to ensure a successful tournament promoting women’s university sports.”Beyond competition, the tournament affirms the core values of teamwork, integrity, and resilience, while advancing women’s participation in sport as a catalyst for human development and social progress.
