 The Local Organising Committee of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, in collaboration with the Qatar School Sports Federation (QSSF), announced on Thursday the group allocations for the new season of the Mini World Cup, which will bring together 32 schools in a competition designed to broaden student participation in basketball and strengthen their connection with the highly anticipated global event.The announcement was made at a press conference, attended by Abdulla al-Mawlawi, Executive Director of the Communications and Guest Relations Committee at the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 Local Organising Committee; Predrag Bogosavljev, Director of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027; and Abdulrahman al-Muftah, Executive Director of the School Olympic Program, alongside representatives of participating schools.The group allocations were determined based on the final standings from the inaugural edition, held during the 2025–2026 academic year, with schools ranked from first to 32nd place. The draw also gave schools the opportunity to select the countries they would represent, creating an experience inspired by international basketball competitions and enabling students to explore the sport from both an athletic and cultural perspective.The initiative combines sporting competition with learning, encouraging students to play basketball, develop teamwork and embrace the values of respect, sportsmanship and intercultural understanding.On the occasion, al-Mawlawi said the tournament offers school students a valuable opportunity to experience healthy competition, promote sportsmanship and foster intercultural understanding, contributing to the wider development of basketball among younger generations.He noted that the partnership with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the Qatar School Sports Federation advances the tournament’s sporting and community goals, reinforces basketball’s presence in schools and creates opportunities to discover emerging talent.He also thanked the partners and local media for their outstanding efforts and instrumental role in supporting the FIBA World Cup Qatar 2027 and its promotional initiatives.Bogosavljev said: “Whenever we host a sporting event, we must ensure that we leave a lasting legacy that extends beyond the conclusion of the event itself. We look forward to educating families and younger generations about basketball, its rich heritage and our future aspirations for the sport.”Al-Muftah, Executive Director of the School Olympic Program, said the tournament brings together sport and learning, introducing students to the heritage of basketball in Qatar and around the world. He added that representing different countries provides participants with an opportunity for cultural exchange and strengthens their connection with the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027.Al-Muftah explained that the initiative is exclusively for boys and offers them the opportunity to experience a simulated version of the Basketball World Cup. He thanked the partners involved in organizing the mini tournament, particularly the participating schools and teams, for their contributions to the initiative’s success.The new season of the Mini World Cup will also feature interactive activities designed to familiarize the school community with preparations for hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, while encouraging greater participation in basketball and raising awareness of the sport’s cultural dimensions. 

Gael Monfils, the last of his generation's French musketeers, has officially retired from tennis, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed to AFP on Wednesday. The 40-year-old had signalled his intention to leave the sport at the end of 2026 but received a wildcard for an ATP 250 event in Lyon and was widely expected to make a farewell appearance at the Paris Masters at Bercy at the start of November. The ITIA, however, confirmed that Monfils has been on their retired players list since October 5, ruling him out of any tournaments for the next six months. Under the rules of the body responsible for anti-doping in tennis, players on this list must make themselves available for random doping tests for at least six months before they are allowed to return to competition. The former world No. 6 played his last official match in early September when he lost to Learner Tien in the second round of the US Open. His first round win over Adolfo Daniel Vallejo at Flushing Meadow made him just the third man aged 40 or over to win a match at the New York slam in the Open era after Ken Rosewall in 1977 and Jimmy Connors in 1992. He had earlier reached the semi-finals of the mixed doubles with his wife Elina Svitolina. Although Monfils, winner of 13 ATP titles, had not yet made any public statement on Wednesday morning, his retirement marks the end of an era for French tennis. After the retirements of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet, "La Monf" is the last of the four "musketeers" of his generation to hang up his racquet. But unlike his contemporaries, all of whom now hold positions connected to tennis, the current world No. 254 had stated in September his intention to move into the world of finance and become a wealth manager for a Swiss company. Having turned professional in 2004, the right-hander reached the semi-finals of the French Open in 2008 and US Open in 2016, and also made it to three Masters 1000 finals.A spectacular player admired admired the world, Monfils produced his final tour de force at the start of the 2025 season. By winning the Auckland tournament at the age of 38, he became the oldest player to win a title on the main tour since 1977, a record since broken by Novak Djokovic.He went on to reach the round of 16 at the Australian Open, notably defeating world No. 4 Taylor Fritz along the way.

Australia batsman Steve Smith took the field on the fifth day of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead on Tuesday, easing concerns he had suffered concussion while batting on Monday. Smith, 37, was struck on the helmet by a bouncer from South Africa fast bowler Anrich Nortje. Although he carried on batting, he did not field when South Africa started their second innings on Monday afternoon.Cricket Australia said later on Monday he was undergoing assessments. Although there was no immediate official statement on Tuesday, Cricket Australia's protocols mean he would not be able to play for a minimum of 24 hours if he was diagnosed with a concussion. Smith practised with his teammates before play on Tuesday and took the field in his normal position at slip. Australia were seeking to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, needing six wickets to wrap up the match. South Africa resumed on 102 for four after being set an improbable 421 to win. 

Rwanda will host Africa's first Formula One Grand Prix since 1993 in "the early 2030s" after the circuit announced a decade-long deal with the country on Tuesday. The East African nation has been chasing a Grand Prix race for years, having already used football, basketball and other sports to enhance its image and attract investment.President Paul Kagame formally announced the bid when Rwanda hosted a gathering of the FIA in December 2024.The last time an F1 race was held in Africa was the 33rd South African Grand Prix, won by Alain Prost 33 years ago. The first African Grand Prix in Rwanda will take place "once a new purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, Rwanda, has been completed", F1 said in a statement."Today is a landmark moment for Formula One," F1 president Stefano Domenicali added. "With Rwanda joining the calendar from the next decade, our sport will race in every inhabited continent, bringing the world championship closer than ever to fans around the globe."Africa has always been part of Formula One's future, and from the beginning we were determined to return in the right way, with the right partner, a long-term commitment and a clear vision for creating meaningful impact." A landlocked country still widely associated with a horrific genocide in 1994, Rwanda has used sports to revamp its image, attract tourists and impress investors with its organisational efficiency. It has spent lavishly on football sponsorship deals with clubs including Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, partnered with the NBA to be the main hub of its African basketball league, and hosted last year's cycling world championships.- 'Today belongs to Africa' -Critics have called this "sports-washing" -- using glitzy events to distract from accusations of serious human rights abuses, including a brutal crackdown on any opposition or dissent.Others see that as Western hypocrisy, arguing that no one described this year's World Cup in the United States as "sports-washing", despite the country's rights abuses."Today belongs to Africa," said Kagame. "For more than three decades, the world's premier motorsport championship has raced without this continent, and that changes with this agreement."The announcement will delight one of F1's biggest stars, Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion has long called for an African stop on the F1 circuit, backing Rwanda's plans in 2024 and calling the country "one of my favourite places".South Africa had also been bidding to host an F1 race, and its sports minister emphasised last week that it should not be ruled out. "(Rwanda) have worked on it longer than (South Africa) and deserve it," South Africa's sports minister Gayton McKenzie posted on X last Thursday after the expected Rwanda deal was reported. "Remember though that one country, Italy, has had two F1s a year, and some react like a continent of 55 countries can only get one." He predicted that "SA will get F1, even before 2030." 

The draw for the eighth edition of the Sports for All Futsal Championship for Ministries and Government Agencies 2026 was held Tuesday. The tournament is organised by the Qatar Sports for All Federation under the umbrella of the Ministry of Sports and Youth.The competition will begin on Sunday at Lusail Sports Arena, with 20 teams representing various ministries, government agencies and institutions.The draw divided the teams into four groups of five. The Ministry of Sports and Youth, the defending champion, was placed in Group A alongside Qatar News Agency, the Public Works Authority's Assets Affairs sector, Qatar Media Corporation, and the Civil Service and Government Development Bureau.**media[503594]**The Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs, runner-up in the previous edition, will lead Group B, which also includes the General Civil Aviation Authority, the State Audit Bureau, the Ministry of Transport and the Public Works Authority.Group C comprises the Ministry of Municipality, Qatar Museums, Qatar Charity, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and the Ministry of Justice.Group D includes the Ministry of Social Development and Family, the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Public Health and the Qatar Olympic Committee.Executive Director of the Qatar Sports for All Federation, Abdullah al-Dosari, said the eighth edition builds on the success of the previous seven tournaments, which had seen improvements in competition standards and growing participation.He said the championship also forms part of the efforts of the Sport Day Award Committee, with participating teams earning points toward their standings in the National Sport Day Award 2027.Al-Dosari added that the tournament is a prominent fixture on the federation's calendar, providing an opportunity for employees of ministries, government agencies and institutions to connect and encouraging them to take part in sports.He said the federation is committed to developing the competition with each edition and ensuring the conditions needed for its success, allowing participating teams to perform at their best. The tournament also brings together employees from different government bodies and helps strengthen professional and social ties among them.

Freshly crowned China Open champion Zheng Qinwen withdrew on Monday from her home tournament in Wuhan, citing fatigue and a right shoulder injury.Zheng became the first Chinese player to clinch the Beijing title on Sunday by defeating reigning Roland Garros champion Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 in the final.It was Zheng's first WTA 1000-level triumph and her first title since winning Tokyo two years ago. "I'm very sorry to share that I will be withdrawing from this year's Wuhan Open," Zheng said in a statement."Wuhan is where my tennis dream began, and the Wuhan Open is also where I made my breakthrough at the WTA 1000 level. I have always looked forward to competing in front of my hometown fans. "Since returning from injury, however, I have played a demanding stretch of tennis over the past month and a half, competing at the US Open, the Billie Jean King Cup, and the China Open."My body is feeling very fatigued after this intense run of matches."An Olympic gold medallist in Paris 2024 and a former world number four, Zheng underwent elbow surgery last year and missed nearly eight months of action, dropping as low as 160 in the rankings this season. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a resurgence over the past few weeks, however, reaching the US Open quarter-finals before lifting the trophy in Beijing. She is now ranked back among the world's top-25 but will not pick up any points in Wuhan, which kicks off Monday and ends on Sunday October 18.Beijing runner-up Andreeva has also withdrawn from Wuhan, citing a change of schedule, as the Russian teenager looks to get some rest ahead of her first singles appearance at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells next month. Zheng and Andreeva join a growing list of high-profile Wuhan absentees that also includes world number one Elena Rybakina, last year's Wuhan champion Coco Gauff and reigning Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova. 

World number 56 Arthur Gea stunned Ben Shelton in straight sets in the third round of the Shanghai Masters on Sunday as the US Open finalist became the biggest casualty so far. The 21-year-old Frenchman beat Shelton 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/3) for the biggest win of his career. "I got outplayed today," world number four Shelton told reporters. "My body wasn't ready," he said, playing in Shanghai as his first tournament since the US Open, apart from the Davis Cup last month.He skipped the Japan Open that ended last week due to fitness concerns. "That's just the way this tour is sometimes," he said, adding that jet lag had also taken a toll.Gea will play either Francisco Cerundolo or Jakub Mensik next. "Amazing, to be honest," he said after his first win over a top-10 player. He said his game was "all about focus, concentration" and staying "ready for every point". Gea added that he has been "more confident on court" following a breakout year that saw him clinch his first professional title in July at a 250-level event in Los Cabos. He stormed to a 5-3 lead in the first set before the 24-year-old American Shelton came back fighting, levelling to 5-5 with a clutch backhand volley at the net.The two players were neck and neck in the tie-break until Gea sneaked ahead to win the first set point. Third seed Shelton forced his way into another tie-break in the second set as the match went past two hours, but faltered as a charging Gea clinched victory at his first chance. 

Marco Bezzecchi stormed to victory in Indonesia on Sunday as Jorge Martin was third to retake the lead from Marc Marquez in the MotoGP world championship. The Italian Bezzecchi, riding an Aprilia, made his move on pole-sitter Raul Fernandez in the final third of a captivating grand prix at a sweltering Mandalika International Circuit. Spain's Fernandez came home second and compatriot Martin third, also riding Aprilia bikes. Ducati's reigning seven-time world champion Marquez finished sixth. That meant Martin retook the lead in the championship from Marquez by two points, with five more race weekends after this.Bezzecchi is still alive in the championship title hunt in third. "It's amazing, I'm very, very happy," said Bezzecchi, who sits on 309 points in the standings.Martin is top with 355, with Marquez on his tail on 353. "Very happy to be back on the top step of the podium. It was a nice battle with Raul (Fernandez) and I think me and all my team deserve a result like this."They have been through tough times with me," said Bezzecchi, who last won a grand prix in May. Martin, who will head to Australia in a fortnight with the most slender of leads, said he had done all he could. "I did the maximum," said Martin, who started alongside title rival Marquez on the second row of the grid."I did my best. At the start I lost a lot of positions but tried to be calm and was overtaking riders step by step.He added: "We are still in the fight and still in the lead." Fernandez, having to improvise to brake after fracturing two fingers in Saturday's sprint, got away cleanly from his first-ever pole.He and Bezzecchi, who started alongside him on the grid, had clashed and crashed out in the sprint. The sprint was won by Marquez to grab the championship lead for the first time from compatriot Martin. After a third of the 27 laps in the grand prix, Fernandez kept the fellow Aprilia of Bezzecchi at bay despite his injury.Former world champion Martin was running third, with Marquez looming in fifth without ever really threatening. Fernandez, who had two previous victories, kept his cool under tremendous pressure from Bezzecchi until lap 19, when the Italian made his move to grasp the lead.Bezzecchi streaked away from there to win by 4.260sec as Fernandez gamely hung on for second. 

Double major winner Xander Schauffele moved four shots off the lead in Japan after carding two eagles and a double bogey on "a weird day" at the US PGA Tour's Baycurrent Classic on Saturday. Defending champion Schauffele heads into Sunday's final day with a shot at retaining his title after carding a 6-under-par 65 to finish the third round 9-under overall. The American had a roller-coaster front nine in sunny conditions in Yokohama, starting with a bogey before holing two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 fourth. Schauffele followed that up with a double bogey on the next hole before sinking another eagle on the par-5 sixth, and went on to card four more birdies and another bogey to finish the round."It was a weird day," said Schauffele, who won Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021. "It was a lot of good, honestly some really bad in there as well."But overall, if someone told me I was going to shoot 65, I'd probably take it." Michael Brennan, Zach Bauchou and Jacob Bridgeman lead the field heading into the final day on 13-under par.Bridgeman is looking for his third win on the tour this year. The trio hold a one-stroke lead over a chasing pack that includes Australia's Adam Scott.Japan's Hideki Matsuyama is eight shots off the lead after a mixed day when he shot a 2-under-par 69. Matsuyama, the 2021 champion in Japan, started like a freight train, rattling in four birdies and an eagle on the first seven holes.He ran into serious trouble on the back nine, though, carding five bogeys and only one more birdie to undo much of his good work."It was a mix of great golf and the worst golf," said 2021 Masters champion Matsuyama. "But it wasn't that I played absolutely terribly on the back nine. "It was little things, so I just need to make some small adjustments to make sure that doesn't happen again tomorrow." Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth was six shots off the lead after shooting a 3-under-par 68 to finish 7-under overall. Spieth is looking for his first win on the tour since April 2022. Collin Morikawa, the 2023 champion in Japan, was on 4-under overall. 

Max Verstappen said Thursday he was determined to settle his "unfinished business" at the Singapore Grand Prix, where he has never won. The Red Bull driver took his first victory of 2026 at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia last weekend, the 72nd time that he has stood on the top step of the podium in a career that has brought him four world titles. But none of those wins have come in Singapore where a bumpy track, slow corners and high humidity seem to favour other cars.The Dutchman would love to break his long losing streak at the Marina Bay Circuit. "I think in the last few years we have always been bad at low speed and over kerbing and bumps," Verstappen told reporters. "This car is probably more competitive at low speed, but we still struggle on bumps and kerbs. We know that and so, of course, I have unfinished business here." He finished second last year behind the Mercedes of George Russell and believes he can go one better and complete back-to-back victories in steamy southeast Asia. "Every year I come back here and I'm trying to win it. I hope we can be a little more competitive this year compared to the last few years."With a sprint race in Singapore this year, it means there is only one Friday practice session for the drivers and teams to get up to speed. "It's always hectic, a sprint weekend, to make the right choices," said Verstappen. "The most important thing is just to find a good balance with the car straight away. That will help a lot for the rest of the weekend." 

World number 34 Nikola Bartunkova stunned her Czech compatriot Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-0 at the China Open on Thursday to breeze into the semi-finals.The 20-year-old sealed the win in just 66 minutes and will play either Mirra Andreeva or Ekaterina Alexandrova in the next round.Bartunkova won five consecutive games in 19 minutes in the first set as her seventh-seeded opponent struggled to respond.Muchova saved five set points but it was not enough to hold back Bartunkova, who had already ousted second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka from the tournament in Beijing.She raced into to another five-game lead in the second set and gave Muchova no chance of a reprieve, forcing her into firing long to seal a win she described as a "dream come true"."Honestly I don't know. It was (an) unbelievable match," Bartunkova said on court."She's a great player and also a great human being."It was a really tough match today, but I was just trying to put my best tennis, and I did it."Andreeva and Alexandrova were due to play each other later on Thursday in an all-Russian affair.
