More than 2,500 trial trips have been completed since the first phase of the country's autonomous electric taxi pilot began in August 2025, with the operation succeeding more than 94% of the time without any human intervention — and user satisfaction running high, even with a safety officer aboard throughout.That record has cleared the way for phase two: full operation, no driver.Eng Nayla Khaled al-Nuaimi, In-Charge of the Road Affairs Department at the Ministry of Transport, said the pilot — run with Mowasalat (Karwa) — confirms that the operational and technical systems are ready for wider driverless service, and that the second phase can proceed in co-ordination with the competent authorities. The first phase tested the operational, technical and regulatory dimensions of the technology, traffic safety, infrastructure readiness and how such vehicles might slot into the existing transport system.The robotaxi is the visible edge of something much larger. The Transportation Master Plan for Qatar-2050 directs investment into infrastructure and into road and public transport networks tied to urban expansion, population growth and future demand for both mobility and freight.The ministry expects measurable returns: higher revenue, lower vehicle operating costs, shorter journey times, fewer crashes and fewer emissions — and a place among global leaders in safe, sustainable transport.Sustainability sits at the centre of the plan: expanding eco-friendly modes, cutting carbon emissions, rationalising energy and fuel consumption, strengthening the sector's financial footing through transport demand policies, and widening partnerships to build and operate projects.Underpinning all of it is data. A national project to collect traffic data has established the case for a Transportation Data Management System — a digital platform built on advanced spatial and geographic databases that lets government agencies and consultancies analyse traffic flows, conduct studies and support decision-making against the latest global standards.Elsewhere, the ministry is building out smart traffic management systems that analyse data and propose fixes for road safety, camera and sensor monitoring networks, integration between the Doha Metro, buses, taxis and limousines through digital applications, and passenger information systems delivering real-time trip and arrival data.Al-Nuaimi said the ministry intends to intensify the use of electric and self-driving buses and vehicles across public transport, while expanding the digital infrastructure that connects vehicles to roads, developing legislation to regulate land transport activities, and applying data analysis and AI to the planning, operation and maintenance of road networks.Two further plans are in motion. A comprehensive public transport plan aims to improve network efficiency, ease congestion, raise connectivity between modes, support urban expansion and set a long-term vision for a more integrated network. A comprehensive bicycle plan promotes active mobility and folds bicycles and micro-mobility into the urban transport system — better quality of life, lower fuel use, fewer emissions.Internationally, the ministry takes part in specialised conferences and workshops on AI applications, smart traffic management, connected and self-driving vehicles, rail and metro projects and integrated transport, alongside co-operation with international institutions.Technology alone will not carry it, al-Nuaimi cautioned. Success depends equally on legislation, cybersecurity, data quality and persuading people to use public transport.Forecasts point to cities leaning harder on self-driving vehicles, on-demand services and AI-based traffic management in the years ahead. Qatar is building the digital infrastructure to meet that shift — and positioning itself as a regional centre for transport innovation. 

Austria’s coalition government plans to extend military service to nine months from six to adapt to a security landscape changed by the war in Ukraine, it said Monday. Neutral Austria’s armed forces have for decades served mainly as a kind of civil protection force, assisting the emergency services during natural disasters such as floods and wildfires, or performing border patrols to intercept illegal immigrants rather than stop advancing foreign troops. The country has for years been trying to strengthen and better equip its military, which the authorities have long said would be unable to defend the homeland against serious attack by an outside power. “The security conditions have changed fundamentally in the past years, months and weeks. The dream of a lasting peace in Europe shattered at the latest with the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine,” Chancellor Christian Stocker told a press conference at a military barracks outside Salzburg. New threats have also emerged including hybrid attacks and cyberwarfare, he said while standing alongside the leaders of the two other ruling parties after a cabinet meeting. “These developments show clearly that Austria must take charge to a greater extent of its own capabilities for self-reliance and protection of the population,” he added. Austria is surrounded by eight countries, all but two of which - western neighbours Switzerland and Liechtenstein - are part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. It borders Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Italy and Slovenia to the south, and Slovakia and Hungary to the east. Austrian boys and men currently have the choice, usually around their 18th birthday, between military service and a nine-month civilian alternative in which they typically work at institutions such as an ambulance service or retirement home. The government said it planned to make it possible to extend so-called civil service by two months on a voluntary basis. It also plans to switch to a reservist model for military service in which conscripts must carry out follow-up exercises within 10 years of their initial service. To make military service more attractive, perks are planned, such as holiday days and almost doubling pay to 1,000 euros ($1,140) a month. Making those changes will, however, require passing legislation with a two-thirds majority in parliament, for which the government needs the support of the opposition Greens or the far-right Freedom Party. Those talks have yet to start. 

President Donald Trump poked fun at the press and honored the Secret Service for protecting him at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on Friday, returning to the event celebrating press freedom after a shooting forced the suspension of the original event in April.Trump, whose administration has often been at odds with the press, started his speech by mostly going along with the warm and relaxed tenor of the evening, alternately mixing friendly jokes with pointed criticism of what he calls the "fake news media."But he also could not resist taking cracks at his political adversaries in the press and show business, singling out for personal attacks journalists such as Don Lemon and Lawrence O'Donnell, politicians like Chris Christie and Adam Schiff, and celebrities including Bruce Springsteen and Jane Fonda.Trump suggested he was going easy on the press after he had planned a more fierce criticism last time around."This place is really the largest group of Trump derangement syndrome people ever put together at one time," he said. "I suspect some of you are lucky that our last dinner was cut short because ... I was going to go after you."This year's dual events marked Trump's first presidential appearance at the correspondents' dinner. He had boycotted the event in his previous years in office, though he promised to come back next year.Press freedom advocates have criticized the Trump administration over lawsuits it has filed against media organizations, restrictions on some journalists' access, and threats of action against broadcasters. He rejects the criticism, saying his administration is promoting accountability and addressing bias.The black-tie gathering of journalists, politicians and administration officials at the Washington Hilton hotel was called off on April 25 after a man tried to force his way through a security checkpoint and fired a shotgun outside the ballroom where Trump and members of his cabinet were taking their seats.The suspect, Cole Allen, pleaded not guilty in May to charges including attempting to assassinate the president.The dinner was moved to a smaller venue at the Waldorf Astoria hotel under heightened security, and one of the first messages of the night was defiance in the face of the assault."Tonight, our message is this: We are back. We will not be intimidated. We refuse to let an act of violence have the final word," said the outgoing president of the White House Correspondents' Association, Weijia Jiang of CBS News.Trump later said, "We do not yield to political violence... No deranged loser with a gun will ever change that."The event also honored Secret Service officer Victor Gonzales, who was shot at a security checkpoint outside the ballroom in April and is credited with stopping the attack, and the Washington Hilton staff who assisted guests. Gonzales was wearing a protective vest and was the only person wounded that night.The gala — an annual fixture on Washington's calendar for more than a century — raises money for journalism scholarships and celebrates press freedoms as guaranteed by the First Amendment of the US Constitution.It normally features a comedian who pokes fun at the president and the press, but this year's entertainment came from mentalist Oz Pearlman.Trump punctuated his speech with a few jokes, telling journalists, "I know it was not easy finding shoes to go along with your bulletproof vest, which many people didn't want to wear because they'd rather die than look 20 pounds heavier." 

The graduation of a new cohort from Kawader's "Excelling in Job Interviews" programme marked another step in preparing young Qataris for the labour market.Organised through Kawader, the Civil Service and Government Development Bureau, the programme equips Qatari jobseekers with the skills needed to navigate recruitment processes and excel in employment interviews.Gulf Times spoke with health advocate Khawla al-Bahr and two programme graduates about the role of sport and healthy lifestyles in preparing young people not only for employment but also for healthier, more productive lives.Al-Bahr stressed that physical wellbeing is a cornerstone of both personal and professional success."A healthy mind exists in a healthy body," she said. "Young people entering the workforce are also the generation that will shape future families and communities. Mothers of young children have a unique opportunity to establish healthy habits at home and raise children who value exercise and balanced nutrition."Al-Bahr lauded Qatar's National Sport Day for helping transform public attitudes towards exercise."It has changed mindsets among both adults and children," she said.Among the programme graduates were Bdour Saeed Ba-khamees and Mai Khamis al-Mansouri, both Qatar University graduates specialising in Management Information Systems and Taxation, who are currently seeking employment through the Kawader platform.For Ba-khamees, sport has become an essential part of her daily routine and a major contributor to her personal development."Exercise is one of the most important activities in my life," she said."People often think it is only about health or appearance, but it has taught me discipline, helped me organise my time and improved my mental wellbeing,” Ba-Khamees said. “Whenever I begin my day with exercise, I feel more energetic and productive."Her routine includes strength training, cardiovascular exercise, cycling, Pilates and horse riding."Sport also introduces you to people from different professions and backgrounds, expanding your network while building confidence and self-esteem," she said.The benefits, she added, quickly extended beyond her own life."I was once the only person in my family who exercised regularly,” Ba-Khamees said. “Today everyone does, my parents and my brothers.”“We've also changed the way we eat by reducing fats, sugar and excessive portions,” she added. “The atmosphere at home has become healthier, happier and more positive."Al-Mansouri described exercise as a turning point during the demanding final year of her university studies."My graduation year was extremely stressful,” she recounted. “I needed an outlet, so I began walking for an hour every day."The results, she said, were immediate."I noticed my productivity improving significantly,” al-Mansouri said.“As stress began affecting my health, my sister-in-law suggested I try Pilates,” she said. “After I started practicing it, my health improved, my eating habits became more balanced, my weight returned to a healthy level after dropping considerably, and my mental wellbeing improved enormously."Inspired by the experience, al-Mansouri is now looking to broaden her sporting interests."I'm considering taking up shooting next,” she said. “A friend who practices the sport has encouraged me to try it, and I'm excited to discover a new challenge."Both graduates believe Qatar's growing sporting culture has encouraged more young people to embrace active lifestyles."Five years ago, it was common to see teenagers paying little attention to their health," Ba-khamees said."Today, people motivate each other to become fitter and healthier,” she added. “The country has opened the door to many new sports, making exercise a sustainable lifestyle rather than a passing trend."She cited the rapid growth of Padel as an example of how innovative sports have attracted young people and inspired wider participation.Al-Mansouri agreed, noting that positive role models have played an important part in that transformation."When students see university lecturers or people they admire playing sports such as Padel, it encourages them to follow their example," she said. "The sport has become popular across different segments of society, particularly among women, creating a supportive community that motivates others to stay active."For al-Bahr, such stories illustrate the long-term impact of sustained health awareness efforts."It is encouraging to see high school and university graduates leading this positive transformation," she said. "By embracing healthy lifestyles themselves, they become role models who can inspire future generations to make health and wellbeing a lifelong priority." 

Hamad International Airport (HIA) and Qatar Airways have opened the door to a passport-free future. The two have jointly launched "Fast Pass," a biometric service that lets travellers glide through the airport's key checkpoints on facial recognition alone — sharply reducing the paper-based document checks that have long defined the departure ritual.Rolled out in partnership with technology firm SITA, it ranks among the largest deployments of biometric identity verification anywhere in the Middle East or, indeed, the world.According to a statement from Hamad International Airport, Fast Pass works by allowing passengers to move through critical airport stages with the fewest possible checks of physical travel documents, the face itself becoming the boarding pass. The scale is striking: the system stitches together more than 700 touchpoints into a single, seamless biometric journey — one built for reliability and engineered to hold passengers to the highest standards of security and data protection at every step through the terminal.Signing up is deliberately simple. Registration for Fast Pass is available at the airport's self-service check-in kiosks and through the Qatar Airways mobile app. Once enrolled, passengers can pass through designated biometric-enabled points — check-in, baggage drop, security screening and boarding gates — using facial identification alone. Activation takes only a few seconds, doing away with repeated document checks and shaving down waiting times, a benefit felt most keenly during peak-season crush.Crucially, the service is optional. Travellers who prefer the familiar can still complete their procedures the traditional way, presenting passports and boarding passes with the help of airport staff. Fast Pass is an invitation, not an obligation.The launch arrives as global appetite for biometric travel gathers pace. The majority of passengers, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), now favour verifying their identity through biometric data over paper documents — a shift in traveller psychology that the world's airports are racing to meet.For Hamad International Airport, Fast Pass is part of a broader push to sharpen innovation and stay ahead of that global curve, while handing passengers a faster, smoother way to navigate the terminal. The major expansion of the service underscores the airport's commitment to a genuinely paperless travel experience.Nor is the rollout finished. The airport says it will keep widening Fast Pass by adding further touchpoints and deepening its ties with technology partners to elevate the overall journey — with the prospect, in the near future, of extending the service to other interested airlines operating out of Hamad International Airport.

Germany saw its highest temperature ever recorded on Friday at 41.3C, according to preliminary weather service data, as the country braces for the possibility of even higher temperatures over the weekend.The new record was seen in the western city of Saarbruecken but the measurement may be changed following quality control checks, the German Weather Service (DWD) said.However if the reading stands it will beat the previous record of 41.2C set in July 2019."It may well be that these temperatures will be reached and slightly surpassed tomorrow," Uwe Baumgarten of the DWD told AFP.Saturday and Sunday could see highs of up to 42C.Just hours earlier on Friday the DWD had said that its measurements indicated that the record for the month of June had been broken -- until today that had stood at 39.6C.The extreme forecast has already prompted the cancellation of numerous events over the weekend, including concerts, festivals and sporting competitions.The Bad Homberg Open professional tennis tournament was suspended on Friday and the event's final was rescheduled for earlier in the morning on Saturday to avoid the sweltering conditions.Cologne called off a children's and family festival scheduled for Sunday, while an outdoor opera performance in Leipzig was scrapped after the opera house decided it would be "irresponsible" to have a youth choir perform in such heat.Environmental authorities in western Germany warned that the heat could cause a fish die-off as rising water temperatures in the Rhine, Mosel and Saar rivers drive down oxygen levels.The deadly heatwave has already baked much of western Europe. Spain has reported scores of heat-related deaths and France has said dozens have drowned and several infants have died in hot cars.As the heatwave moves east, other parts of central Europe are bracing for extreme highs along with Germany, including temperatures over 40C forecast in the Czech Republic and Hungary.

His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan Al-Thani attended on Tuesday a graduation ceremony for the 26th cohort of national service recruits at the National Service Academy. The graduates completed a year-long training program that combined practical and theoretical instruction, achieving a range of objectives designed to prepare them for service and leadership responsibilities. During the ceremony, HE Sheikh Saoud launched the Muqdam Al Ghad (Tomorrow's Pioneer) summer training program, which will run from June 28 to July 23. The initiative is aimed at developing leadership skills and strengthening national identity among participants aged between 11 and 15, helping equip them to meet future challenges with a strong sense of patriotism. At the conclusion of the event, His Excellency honored the top-performing graduates from the 26th cohort in recognition of their achievements during the training program. The ceremony was also attended by HE Minister of Transport Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Thani, HE Minister of State for Interior Affairs Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Faisal bin Mohammed Al-Thani, and Chief of Staff of Qatar Armed Forces Lt Gen (Pilot) Jassim bin Mohammed Al Mannai, alongside senior military officers of the Qatari Armed Forces and families of the graduates.

 Agentic systems are reshaping the future of Islamic banking, with experts warning that their growing role in finance and business makes it imperative to define how the sector adapts to this new paradigm. This was emphasised by Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, chairman of the organising committee and vice chairman of Bait Al Mashura Finance Consultations, during the 12th Doha Islamic Finance Conference held yesterday in Doha. Under the theme ‘Islamic Finance in the Age of Agentic Systems’, the event also marked the launch of the Doha Islamic Finance Conference Award, a global initiative aimed at recognising outstanding achievements in Islamic economics and finance. Al-Sulaiti said the expansion of agentic AI systems into roles long reserved for humans requires Islamic finance to examine its position within this emerging landscape.“The growing expansion of agentic AI systems in finance and business, as they increasingly assume roles long reserved for humans, makes it a scientific and strategic imperative to examine the position of Islamic finance within this emerging paradigm,” he said. He also said, “The responsibility of Islamic finance is not limited to benefiting from or adapting to these transformations, but also includes contributing to the development of a financial model that combines technological efficiency with value based governance.” Sheikh Abdullah bin Fahad al-Thani, chairman of Dukhan Bank, said agentic systems present opportunities to reimagine financial services in ways that enhance efficiency and responsiveness. He noted that digital innovation has become a cornerstone of Dukhan Bank’s strategy, reflecting its conviction that technology will play a defining role in shaping the future of Islamic finance. Engineer Hassan al-Marzouqi, director general of the General Directorate of Endowments, said the emergence of agentic systems opens broad opportunities to enhance asset management and strengthen governance and transparency. He cautioned that while these technologies offer promise, they also raise Shariah, legal, and regulatory questions that warrant careful study. Al-Marzouqi added that the directorate’s support for the conference reflects its mission to promote innovative scientific research and enrich knowledge. He expressed hope that the award launched at the event will become a platform for recognising creativity and excellence in Islamic finance. “We hope the award will become a leading platform for recognising creativity and excellence and a catalyst for advancing knowledge and professional practices across the various fields of Islamic finance.” 

Qatar has widened the gates of its national service programme, inviting a new generation of young men into uniform: the children of Qatari mothers and the foreign-born sons of long-settled residents.  The Ministry of Defence announced the change in a post on X Tuesday, opening a door that until now had been restricted to those without Qatari fathers.  To walk through it, applicants must have been born in Qatar, be at least 18 years of age, carry a clean record of good conduct and reputation, and hold a valid Qatar residency permit.  The fine print sets out the rest. Candidates must not have been convicted of crimes involving dishonesty or breach of trust unless they have since been rehabilitated, nor have been dismissed from service before.  They must be medically fit and clear the admission interview. For those who make the cut, the rewards are tangible.  Service may run for up to five years and carries a financial incentive of as much as QAR7,000 a month.  Recruits will enjoy priority consideration for a place in the Qatar Armed Forces, and once their term is done, priority in securing permanent residency, a prize coveted across the Gulf's expatriate communities.  Applications are to be filed electronically through the ministry's website under the recruitment option. The paperwork is straightforward: a copy of the Qatar ID card, a valid passport and, for those born here, a birth certificate. Children of Qatari mothers must add copies of the mother's passport and birth certificate.
