A bomb blast at a crowded cafe in central Damascus killed at least six people and wounded 22 others Thursday, Syrian state media reported.There was no immediate claim of responsibility.An AFP correspondent saw ambulances weaving through traffic with their sirens blaring as they headed to the site, and security forces cordoned off the area of the blast.Syrian state television said an explosive device had been planted at the cafe, near the Palace of Justice in the centre of the capital.Damascus Governor Maher Idlibi said the blast was caused by a crudely made improvised explosive device (IED), according to Syrian state media."Those responsible for this bloodshed will be punished," he said. "Each time the country sees a period of stability, malicious parties try to destabilise it."Videos that circulated on social media showed wounded people and blood on the floors of a cafe, purportedly the site of the blast.Reuters could not immediately verify the footage.Nour Khayyat, 40, who owns a shop selling batteries for solar panels near the site, told AFP that "at about 3pm (1200 GMT), I heard a powerful blast and the storefront shook"."People rushed to the cafe and called ambulances," he added.Mohammed al-Dahabi, the owner of a glasses shop next to the targeted cafe, was trembling as he described the explosion, telling AFP: "I felt strong pressure, and the whole place shook.”"I ran to the place and saw people lying on the floor with blood pooled around them everywhere," he added, saying the scenes recalled the bombings Damascus experienced during Syria's nearly 14-year civil war.The attack presents another security challenge to the Syrian government of President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who took control after overthrowing former president Bashar al-Assad in late 2024.Assad's ouster effectively ended more than 14 years of civil war.Damascus has witnessed a handful of security incidents since then, including a car bomb that killed one Syrian soldier and wounded at least 18 people outside the defence ministry in May.Although no group claimed responsibility for Thursday's blast, Islamic State has sought to exploit the security vacuum created by Assad's ouster by reactivating sleeper cells, recruiting fighters and moving weapons as the new government extends its authority across the country, security officials had said.The militant group announced earlier this year what it described as a new phase of operations against al-Sharaa's government.The group is far weaker than when it controlled large parts of Syria and Iraq before the collapse of its self-declared caliphate in 2019.It remains, however, capable of carrying out deadly insurgency-style attacks and is viewed by Syrian, Iraqi and Western officials as one of the biggest threats to Syria's transition.Al-Sharaa's other opponents include Assad-era officers and soldiers.In 2025, Syria was rocked by fighting between the new government forces and insurgents from Syria's Alawite minority, and separately between government forces and Druze gunmen.

Pakistani security forces killed 145 militants in a ‌40-hour battle launched as a series ‍of co-ordinated gun and bomb attacks across Balochistan left nearly 50 people dead, the province's chief minister said Sunday.Authorities in the ⁠southwestern province are battling one of the deadliest ⁠flare-ups in years, as insurgents in the resource-rich province bordering Iran and Afghanistan step up assaults on security ‍forces, civilians and infrastructure.Attackers dressed as ordinary civilians entered hospitals, schools, banks and markets on Saturday before opening fire, Pakistan's junior interior minister Talal Chaudhry said."In each case, the attackers came in dressed as civilians and indiscriminately targeted ordinary people working in shops," he said, adding militants had used civilians as human shields.The banned separatist group Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying it had launched a coordinated operation dubbed Herof, or "black storm", targeting security forces across the province.In Quetta, ‌the provincial capital, the aftermath was visible in burnt-out vehicles at a police station, bullet-riddled doors and streets sealed off with yellow tape, as security forces tightened patrols and restricted movement following the attacks.Chief Minister of Balochistan Sarfraz ‍Bugti said 17 law enforcement personnel and ⁠31 civilians were killed ‌in the militant attacks. Pakistan's military said 92 militants were killed on Saturday, while 41 were killed on Friday."We had intelligence reports that this kind of operation was being planned, and as a result of those, we started pre-operations a day before," Bugti said.The latest total is the highest number of militants killed in such a short span since the insurgency intensified, Bugti said, without providing comparative figures.Officials said the militant assaults were launched almost simultaneously across Quetta, Gwadar, Mastung and Noshki districts, with armed men opening fire at security installations including a Frontier Corps headquarters, attempting suicide bombings and briefly blocking roads in urban areas, prompting large-scale counter-operations by the army, police and counterterrorism units.Outside a damaged shop, private security guard Jamil Ahmed Mashwani said attackers struck shortly after ​midday. "They hit me on my face and ‌head."Balochistan, Pakistan's largest province, has faced a decades-long insurgency led by ethnic Baloch separatists seeking greater autonomy and a larger share ⁠of its natural resources.The group claimed it ‍had killed 84 members of Pakistan's security forces and captured 18 others. Reuters could not independently verify the claim. The military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that two of the attacks involved female perpetrators and militants were increasingly targeting civilians, labourers and low-income communities.The military said security forces had repelled attempts by militants to seize control of any city or strategic installation.Pakistan's military ​said on Saturday the attacks were carried out by "Indian-sponsored militants". India denied that assertion Sunday."We categorically reject the baseless allegations made by Pakistan," Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement".The United States condemned the attacks, with US Charge d'Affaires Natalie Baker calling them acts of terrorist violence and saying Washington stood in solidarity with Pakistan. The Balochistan Liberation Army is designated by the US as a foreign terrorist organisation.Pakistan has faced periodic attacks by Islamist ⁠militants elsewhere in the country, including factions linked to the Pakistani Taliban. 

Iraqi security forces announced Friday the arrest of two prominent members of the ISIS organization during a security operation in Kirkuk Governorate, northern Iraq.The Iraqi Military Intelligence Directorate stated that security forces managed, during a special operation, to apprehend two ISIS members, noting that one of the detainees was responsible for logistical tasks, while the other participated in several attacks targeting Iraqi security forces.The statement added that the operation comes as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security and stability in the governorate and to pursue remnants of the ISIS organization.Iraqi forces continue to pursue ISIS remnants and sleeper cells across various provinces of the country.
