Afghans celebrate spring in bright red poppy fields

In the middle of a field filled with bright red poppies, Afghans frolic among the spring flowers in a tradition deeply rooted in the country’s north.Families flocked to the valleys of Shirin Tagab district, near the border with Turkmenistan, to be among thousands of flowers that appeared after abundant rain. “There has been a drought for almost 10 years. No flowers or greenery grew,” said Ghawsudin, who only uses one name.“This year has been very good, and God is merciful,” said the 79-year-old, who drove for three hours just to see the flowers. Mohammad Ashraf, a 35-year-old visitor, said he hadn’t seen so many poppies for more than a decade. “Now there are so many red flowers, and you see people come here for picnics,” he told AFP.The landscape in Shirin Tagab is brightened by the common poppy, not the opium poppy that authorities have banned. Many Afghans living in the north used to travel to see the poppies after celebrating Persian New Year, Nowruz, in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The Taliban government, which applies a strict interpretation of Islamic law, has stopped such celebrations each spring.But the tradition of visiting the poppies, which are widely revered in poems and songs, has endured. Oriane Zerah, a photographer who published a book about Afghans and flowers, said they are an integral part of daily life. “As soon as an Afghan has a little space in their garden, they plant a flower. Even in displacement camps, there’ll be a flower somewhere. They put them on their pakol, one of their traditional hats, and there are desserts made with flowers,” she told AFP. The poppy has also been associated with wartime in the country, with the flower often placed on the coffins of fighters, according to Afghan writer Taqi Wahidi. “Dying in the path of the homeland, or in the path of religion and faith, was considered a kind of new resurrection and entry into a new life,” he told AFP.The same flower is widely used in countries, such as Britain, Australia and New Zealand, where people wear artificial poppies to remember those killed in past conflicts.Nowadays in Afghanistan, however, the poppy “symbolises vitality and freshness”, according to Wahidi.“At the same time that nature is renewed, human beings also want to bring new colours into their lives,” he said.

Illegal disposal of waste detected

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has spotted an environmental violation involving the illegal disposal of waste in a non-designated area of the desert, coinciding with the official conclusion of the winter camping season. The Land Protection Department confirmed that field monitoring and inspection teams shave successfully identified the violation and took all necessary legal measures, referring the case to the competent authorities. The ministry stressed that such behaviour constitutes a clear breach of environmental protection laws and undermines ongoing efforts to preserve the cleanliness of meadows and open desert areas.

What a player! Growing calls for Suryavanshi to make India debut

There were growing calls Tuesday for teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi to be fast-tracked into India’s senior national team after slamming a 17-ball 52 to launch his IPL season.The batsman turned 15 last week, making him eligible to represent India under International Cricket Council rules, having already starred for his country at youth level.On Monday he smacked four fours and five sixes as Rajasthan Royals chased down a target of 128 with 7.5 overs to spare against Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati.The teenager made history in last year’s IPL in a dazzling debut season highlighted by a 35-ball century, the second fastest in the history of the T20 tournament.Spin bowling great Anil Kumble compared Suryavanshi to batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who made his full international debut aged 16.“Yes, absolutely. If a player shows this level of consistency, he should be fast-tracked, just like Sachin Tendulkar,” Kumble said on JioHotstar.Suryavanshi has already made his mark at youth international level, hammering 175 off just 80 balls as India beat England in the Under-19 World Cup final in February. Former India batter Ambati Rayudu described Suryavanshi as “a cut above a lot of youngsters in the country”.“He’s a talent that will definitely do wonders for Indian cricket,” Rayudu said on ESPNcricinfo. “I don’t know when, but definitely in the future.” Inside the Rajasthan Royals camp, the leadership group has been focused on shielding the prodigy from the pressures of early fame.“What I tell him is that you’re going to play 14 games (in this season’s IPL) and regardless of what goes on in the game, it shouldn’t bother you,” captain Riyan Parag said.“What goes around in the media shouldn’t bother you.”He added following Monday’s latest eye-catching display: “Like everyone in the stands, we also had this feeling of ‘wow’, wondering how he is able to do this.“He is a talent and I am very glad that he is in our team, and not the opponent’s,” he said.

Asian Games cruise ship and wooden huts will be 'unique experience'

Athletes at the Asian Games in Japan will have "a unique experience" staying on a cruise ship and in wooden containers, an organising official told AFP six months out from the event, but acknowledged there were concerns about the plan.About half of the expected 15,000 athletes and officials will live in the eye-catching temporary accommodation during the Games, which are in Nagoya and the wider Aichi area from September 19 to October 4 - coinciding with typhoon season in Japan.The rest will stay in hotels, including in Tokyo, where swimming, diving and equestrian events are taking place.Organisers say using the cruise ship and container units are cheaper than building a traditional athletes' village, although they admit the unusual approach has raised eyebrows.Kazuhiro Yagi, vice-secretary general of the Aichi-Nagoya Games organising committee, told AFP that the accommodation would offer "an experience that's difficult to come by"."If people were going to live there long-term, that would be a different story," he said."But in this case it's a very limited period and athletes will spend much of their time training and then come back simply to rest."I would like them to go back home having had a unique experience," he added.Between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes and officials will stay on the Italian cruise ship Costa Serena, which will be docked at Nagoya Port during the Games.The vessel, which features 571 cabins, seven swimming pools, eight restaurants and nine bars, is being chartered at a cost of about 4.5b yen ($28mn), said Yagi.According to the official website, the ship has "an elegant, surprising, ironic and magnetic soul".It is a sister ship of the Costa Concordia, which sank off Tuscany in 2012, killing 32 people.A further 2,000 athletes and officials will stay in wooden shipping container-style huts in Nagoya's Garden Pier area.Some of the units, which Yagi says are "essentially brand new", have already been installed."I've heard some say the space is a bit tight, but from what I saw, they provide an adequately liveable environment," he said.Yagi says athletes will be assigned to a particular type of accommodation based on their sport, not by country.Power of sportHe also says organisers will be ready to deal with Japan's typhoon season."We don't expect extremely large waves but we must be prepared for emergencies," he said."Forecast accuracy has improved and we can generally see a typhoon's path about a week in advance now."Yagi says preparations for the Games are on course, with the main athletics venue set to open next month.He says there has been a "marked improvement" in public awareness in Japan of the event, and tickets started to go on sale for local residents last month.Organisers hope to emulate the success of the world athletics championships, which were held in Tokyo last year in front of mostly sold-out crowds."It was incredible, I was there when (pole vaulter Armand) Duplantis set the world record," said Yagi."It was close to 11:00 pm but no one was leaving, everyone was clapping along."The collective gasp when he broke the record was awe-inspiring, it really made me realise again how wonderful sport is."Japanese organisers are keeping a close eye on the situation in the Middle East, and say that at present the war there is not likely to have an impact on the Games.Yagi says there are no special plans for the Iran team, or North Korea, which is reportedly preparing to send a delegation of more than 260 athletes and officials.With just months to go, he says preparations are going "according to plan"."We are working to further reinforce coordination with the relevant organisations so that we can welcome the Games with everything in perfect order," he said.

Qatar's 2025-26 cruise season kicks off with arrival of MSC Euribia

Qatar Sunday kicked off the 2025/26 cruise season at the Old Doha Port, welcoming MSC Euribia, operated by MSC Cruises, carrying 5,000 passengers and a crew of 1,676 members. One of the newest and largest vessels in the MSC fleet, MSC Euribia spans 331m in length and 43m in width, accommodating up to 6,327 guests and powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) for cleaner, more sustainable voyages, Mwani Qatar said in its social medial handle X. Throughout the season, which runs until May 2026, the ship will make 22 scheduled calls at The Terminal, managed by Mwani Qatar — reaffirming Qatar's growing prominence as a premier destination on the global cruise tourism map. Last week, a coordination meeting was held as part of the preparations for 2025/26 cruise season, bringing together stakeholders, agents, and tour operators to discuss operational plans and coordination efforts to ensure a successful season and an exceptional visitor experience. Qatar has proven to be one of the most sought after luxury cruise destinations in the Arabian Gulf’s winter cruise season. To support the tremendous growth of the industry, Mwani Qatar plays a key role in the redevelopment of the port and its facilities. Doha port provides a wide range of passenger facilities, including seamless immigration, customs, foreign exchange, taxi and bus stands, city bus tours as well as Qatar Duty Free, cafe, waiting areas for cruise passengers and staff. It also features various tourist information services offered by Qatar Tourism. Relevant Mwani Qatar marine services within the port are offered to the vessels calling at Doha Port, ensuring safe and efficient arrival and departure. Mwani Qatar works closely with Qatar Tourism and the Ministry of Interior to develop the cruise industry which has seen a remarkable increase in the passenger arrivals over the years. Qatar's 2024/25 cruise season had welcomed more than 396,000 visitors aboard 87 cruise ships, marking a 5% jump in visitors and a 19% rise in vessel calls against the previous season. Doha Port’s cruise terminal is strategically located minutes away from key attractions such as the National Museum of Qatar and Souq Waqif, optimising the visitor experience by allowing cruise passengers to make the most of their time in the city. Qatar Tourism plans to strengthen its collaborations with more international cruise lines, which is vital for driving further growth in Qatar’s tourism sector and contributing to Qatar’s economic diversification efforts. "Doha has become a prominent cruise destination with varied tourism experiences offered to visitors. From its debut in October 2023 to its grand finale in April 2024, this cruise season has exceeded all expectations breaking the records of visitors and cruise ships from previous seasons. The Grand Cruise Terminal symbolising Qatar's commitment to excellence” Saad bin Ali al-Kharji, chairman of Qatar Tourism had said. Qatar is gaining popularity as a world-class cruise destination in the region as it showcased exceptional tourism capabilities, especially after hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In this regard, efforts are currently underway to attract more cruise lines and travelers in the upcoming seasons.

The perilous escalation of settler attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank, which intensified during the olive harvest season, is occurring without any deterrence or accountability, and often under the direct protection of the Israeli army, Euro‑Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor (Euro-Med Monitor) said in a statement Sunday. The statement further indicated that this forms part of a deliberate and systematic policy that uses settler violence to reinforce Israeli control, alongside rapid settlement expansion and land expropriation to impose de facto annexation and displace Palestinian residents. The systematic escalation forms part of a broader effort to consolidate Israeli control over the West Bank by depopulating it and expanding the territorial and operational influence of settlements, the statement continued. It added that this includes turning settlers into practical extensions of the army in attacks and land seizure operations, while imposing new patterns of field control that entrench separation and isolation between Palestinian communities, undermining any possibility of establishing a contiguous or independent Palestinian entity.Euro-Med Monitor's field team has documented a marked increase in settler attacks against Palestinians in recent weeks, particularly farmers. These attacks have included physical assault, theft of olive harvests, burning of trees, destruction of property, and preventing access to agricultural land, the statement read. The statement further stressed that dozens of incidents took place under the direct protection of Israeli forces, with soldiers participating in some of them, clearly indicating an integrated system aimed at persecuting and displacing Palestinians. In addition, Euro-Med Monitor documented 324 settler attacks over 39 days, from the beginning of October until the evening of November 8, averaging eight attacks per day. Settler violence during the current olive harvest season is the highest in years, with approximately 163 incidents resulting in injuries to more than 143 Palestinians and the destruction of over 4,200 trees and saplings across 77 West Bank villages, the statement added. It further noted that the attacks carried out by organised, militia-like armed settlers who launch from settlements and illegal outposts throughout the West Bank have become a systematic practice of armed violence against Palestinian civilians.
