The General Retirement and Social Insurance Authority (Daman) will participate in the 63rd meeting of the Technical Committee of Civil Retirement and Social Insurance Agencies of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries.Hosted by Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the three-day meeting begins Monday with the participation of representatives from civil retirement and social insurance agencies in the GCC member states.It aims to strengthen joint GCC co-operation in the field of civil retirement and social insurance systems, exchange institutional expertise, and develop policies and initiatives that serve GCC citizens working both within and outside their home countries, contributing to the establishment of a more integrated and sustainable social protection system.The meeting will discuss several strategic topics on its agenda, including the action plan of the committee of heads of civil retirement and social insurance agencies for the period 2026-2030, updating the unified system for extending social security coverage to GCC citizens working outside their home countries, the initiative for electronic linkage between retirement and social insurance agencies, and initiatives for training, qualification, and institutional capacity building.It will also address the development of statistical indicators and collection mechanisms, the launch of a unified GCC awareness campaign, the organisation of periodic seminars, and the establishment of a scientific research award for civil service pension and social security institutions. Additionally, it will discuss the benefits offered to retirees and unemployment insurance for those covered by the social security extension system.The meeting programme includes a periodic gathering of business owners and citizens of the GCC countries, which will enhance direct communication with beneficiaries and contribute to developing insurance policies that align with the needs of the GCC labour market and the requirements of the next phase.Daman affirmed that its participation in this meeting stems from its commitment to supporting GCC integration in the fields of pensions and social security, strengthening joint institutional work, and developing the social protection system to achieve financial sustainability and improve the quality of services provided to subscribers and retirees, in accordance with national development plans and Qatar National Vision 2030. 

Former lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury said Sunday that he will come out of retirement this year for his first fight ‌since losing to Oleksandr Usyk in December ‌2024. Fury announced his ‍retirement after losing a rematch with Ukraine’s Usyk, who had won by split decision in their first bout to become the undisputed champion. Usyk ‍is the only boxer to beat Fury in the Briton’s professional career, which includes 34 wins, two losses, and one draw. “2026 is that year. Return of the Mac. Been away for a while but I’m back now, 37 years old and ‌still punching. Nothing better to do than punch men in the face & get paid for it,” Fury posted on Instagram. Fury, ‍nicknamed ‘The Gypsy King’, had previously spent ‌over two-and-a-half years away from the ring as he went through mental health struggles after his win over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 to take the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles. He returned to action in 2018, and knocked out Deontay Wilder to win the WBC heavyweight belt in February 2020. Fury again announced retirement in 2022, only to come back six months ​later. In the past, fellow ‌Briton and former champion Anthony Joshua had called out Fury for a fight multiple times, ‍including after last month’s knockout win over Jake Paul. “If Tyson Fury is as serious as he thinks he is... step in the ring with me next, if you’re a real bad boy. Don’t do all that ​talking, AJ this, AJ that. Let’s see you in the ring and talk with your fists,” Joshua had said last month. Joshua recently spent a few days in hospital after suffering minor injuries in a car crash in Nigeria that killed two of his friends. He was discharged from hospital on Thursday, a day before police charged his driver with dangerous driving over the fatal collision. 

Local people rescue an elderly woman during a fire at the Werdha Damai retirement home in Manado, North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, Monday. Sixteen people died in the tragedy which occurred late Sunday. The home's caretaker said ​its residents were the elderly, and about 30 people had been in the complex. 

Two giant pandas were flying home from France to China for retirement Tuesday, after the female was diagnosed with kidney failure, with a Chinese official pledging new bears would soon replace them.Huan Huan and her partner Yuan Zi arrived at the Beauval Zoo in central France in 2012 as part of China's "panda diplomacy" programme, which sees the black-and-white bears dispatched across the globe as soft-power ambassadors.The two pandas, both 17, were meant to stay in France until January 2027, but they left in a plane Tuesday to live out their retirement at China's Chengdu panda sanctuary.The pair were loaded onto a plane at Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport, each in their own box dotted with ventilation holes, with the words "Bon voyage" inscribed on the side.Before they departed, a Chinese embassy official promised new bears would soon be dispatched to make up for the popular pair leaving."Rest assured, French friends, new giant pandas will arrive in the future," said Chinese embassy official Chen Dong.More than 200 well-wishers had braved the cold and rain on Sunday to say farewell, including one couple dressed head-to-toe in panda-themed gear, who say they have visited the bears "more than a thousand times" since their arrival in 2012.Patrice Colombel, an electronics technician, and his wife Veronique, an administrative assistant at a secondary school, told AFP they would not have missed the chance to see them off."They are the first pandas we have ever known. We wanted to be there to say goodbye to them," the couple visiting from the southwest city of Bordeaux told AFP.The pair produced three cubs while in France — the first pandas to do so in the country — and became star attractions at the Beauval zoo in Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher, which welcomed some two million visitors in 2023.The decision to send them back to China came after Huan Huan was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease — a common condition in bears around her age, according to zoo director Rodolphe Delord.The move came with "a twinge of sadness", Delord said.But the twins born in 2021 are expected to remain at Beauval for now, said Delord, adding he hopes to extend the zoo's partnership with China beyond 2027.The eldest of the offspring, Yuan Meng, left France for China in 2023.Panda keeper Delphine Pouvreau said their departure would be "very hard" for the caretakers, who have forged a strong bond with the bears."We experienced the first birth of a baby panda in France here," she said, adding the memory would remain "engraved in our hearts".The giant panda was downgraded last year from "endangered" to "vulnerable" on the global list of at-risk species.Only about 20 zoos outside China have pandas, which have become a symbol of Beijing's diplomatic friendships.China has been using so-called "panda diplomacy", in which the bears are sent across the globe as soft-power ambassadors, for decades.In 1972, it gifted a pair of pandas to Washington, following US president Richard Nixon's historic visit to the Communist nation.
