Environment Ministry sows 5,000 seeds, plants 300 wild seedlings in Al Suwairiyat ahead of rainy season

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, through its Wildlife Development Department, has launched an environmental campaign at Rawdat Al Suwairiyat in the Al Ghuwairiya area, involving the sowing of 5,000 seeds and the planting of 300 wild seedlings. The initiative forms part of the 2026 program to restore natural vegetation in Qatar's rawdas, or natural low-lying depressions that collect seasonal rainwater. Following rainfall, these areas can quickly burst into bloom, forming temporary desert meadows that support native vegetation, provide habitats for birds, animals and insects, and contribute to groundwater replenishment. The campaign aims to conserve and restore rawdas, enhance vegetation cover and biodiversity, raise public awareness of the importance of wild plants, and encourage community involvement in protecting natural habitats. In a statement issued Sunday, the Ministry said sowing seeds at this time of year was particularly important to take advantage of seasonal rainfall, which helps native plants germinate and regenerate natural vegetation. The campaign coincides with the start of the rainy season. The Ministry added that its conservation and restoration programs use modern technologies, including geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, satellite imagery analysis and spatial databases, to identify priority areas for protection and tailor fieldwork to the specific needs of each site. It stressed that successful restoration efforts depend on selecting suitable native plant species, protecting sites after planting, and preventing harmful practices such as tree cutting, shrub uprooting and driving over vegetation.

Ashghal prepares for rainy season

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) is preparing for the upcoming rainy season, taking up measures to ensure timely response and mitigate the impact of rainfall. “Ashghal has held several successful training to evaluate the fast response team's abilities in mitigating the impacts of heavy rainfall on urban infrastructure, public safety and traffic flow,” Ashghal said in an X post. Ashghal said that prompt mobilisation, effective co-ordination and field knowledge are crucial for minimising risks and averting disruptions during rain incidents. Ashghal, according to the post, has carried out critical operations successfully to prepare for the rainy season, including setting up rubber ramps, deploying hoses to drain water and operating diesel pumps. The authority explained that the fast response team remains on high alert, ready to act at a moment's notice. Their responsibilities include monitoring flood-prone areas and offering immediate assistance to affected communities. They offer vital support to the impacted main roads and has a contemporary fleet that is fully stocked with all the equipment required. Ahead of the rainy season, Ashghal developed a mechanism to overcome rainwater-related issues and intensified training for its staff members to help them improve the complaint redress time and ensure fast response in dealing with water accumulation. Ashghal uses the latest technologies to monitor the drainage networks and roads to ensure they are free from waterlogging. As part of its role to raise awareness and continuously communicate with the public, Ashghal launches awareness campaigns on precautionary measures that are to be taken before and during rain.
