Gulf-to-Europe railway to ease Hormuz disruption

Turkiye and Saudi Arabia aim to build a railway to link the two countries with Jordan and Syria in the next three ‌or four years, Turkish Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said Sunday, adding ‌other Gulf countries would also join the project.Speaking ‌to Al Jazeera, ‌Uraloglu said the railway would ‌help alleviate in future the problems that have arisen from the disruption of the Strait of Hormuz caused by the war in Iran. The project is described in a memorandum of understanding signed between Ankara and Riyadh last week on logistics cooperation and the railway sector.In the initial phase, a rail link would allow for the transport of goods, oil, natural gas and people between Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Jordan, Syria and Europe, Uraloglu said, adding that the ‌Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Oman, and possibly Yemen would be included later too."A train leaving from Saudi Arabia, from Riyadh already reaches several regions of Saudi Arabia. So this is a project for it to reach Turkiye via Jordan and Syria. We are talking about a route that will carry every type of freight via this route to Europe," Uraloglu was cited as saying. He said the route from Saudi Arabia to Jordan's ‌border had been finished and ‌on the Turkish side, the link was completed from Islahiye to Kilis and Gaziantep in southeastern Turkiye, near the border with Syria.That leaves a gap of some 400km between Syria and Jordan, he said.In addition to commercial trade, Uraloglu said the railway could also be used by people on the annual Haj pilgrimage.Turkiye, which neighbours Syria, has built close ties with the government in Damascus after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad at the end of 2024 and has said it will help the country rebuild.Uraloglu told Al Jazeera a financial plan would be drawn up for the rail project. The investment would include some $100mn to rebuild the route ‌between Turkiye and Syria's Aleppo, creating a direct link to Damascus.

Kenyan President William Ruto (L) and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni (R) launch construction of the Kisumu-Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line in Kisumu, on March 21, 2026. Kenya, Uganda open rail extension burdened by Chinese debt

The presidents of Kenya and Uganda met near their shared border Saturday to mark the multi-billion-dollar, long-delayed extension of a Chinese-built railway that has left Kenya heavily in debt.The Standard Gauge Railway, built from 2013 to 2019, connects the Kenyan port of Mombasa to its capital Nairobi, and on to the lake town of Naivasha, but China refused further lending before it could be extended to Uganda as planned.Kenya now spends roughly $1bn a year servicing Chinese debt, most of it borrowed to build the railway.That is far more than the line generates in revenue -- around $165mn last year -- even if passenger and cargo numbers have been growing strongly over the past year.A report by Kenya's auditor general last year found more than $260mn had been wasted just on penalties and interest from late debt payments.Yet despite the controversy over the cost, Kenya has been keen to finish the line.Kenyan President William Ruto said the rail link will "define generations", speaking at a ceremony in grand pomp and circumstance with his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni in Kisumu, near the Kenya-Uganda border.Ruto argued the line would slash logistics costs that "undermine competitiveness" in east Africa.If the ambitious building schedule is to be believed, the line is due to reach Kisumu by June 2027. The next phase will then take the line to Malaba, a town on the border."Cargo takes an average of 80 hours to move from Mombasa to Malaba and more than 100 hours to reach Kampala," the Ugandan capital, Ruto said."We cannot build prosperity on inefficiency."Museveni said the line would reduce the inefficiencies in his own country's infrastructure."The railway is part of the rationalisation of our transport system, especially on the Uganda side, which is irrational and wasteful," the veteran leader told the ceremony.Ruto broke ground on the next phase in Narok County on Thursday, arguing that it will create jobs and reduce road congestion."We have thought through this project (and)... its finance," he insisted.Treasury estimates say the overall cost will be more than 500bn shillings ($3.9bn), according to Kenya's Business Daily.Kenya is not taking more cash from Chinese banks this time -- instead borrowing against future cargo taxes -- though it is partnering with Chinese transport firms to build the new phase.China lent Kenya $9.7bn between 2000 and 2019, according to the Chinese Loans to Africa Database by Boston University, with around half of that going to the railway.It stopped lending from 2020 to 2023 as Kenya struggled to make repayments, at a time when China revised its broader lending strategy in Africa.Kenya considers the railway extension crucial for strengthening trade through east and central Africa, hoping to reach landlocked countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and the mineral-rich Democratic Republic of Congo.

At least five hurt in Russian strikes on railway infrastructure in southern Ukraine

At least five people were injured Wednesday in ‌two Russian attacks targeting railway infrastructure in southern ‌Ukraine, Ukrainian officials said.A railway ‌worker was hurt ‌in a drone ‌strike, which hit an empty passenger train in the morning in the Mykolaiv region, Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said on the Telegram messaging app.Another worker and two children were hurt later when a Russian missile hit an administrative building at a railway station in the neighbouring Odesa region, he said.An official later updated ‌the number of injured in the missile attack to four, without saying who the fourth person was.Kuleba said there was also an attempted Russian drone attack late on Tuesday on a train operating between the eastern-central city of Dnipro and Kovel in northwestern Ukraine. It was stopped by railway workers and the drone ‌hit a few ‌metres away from the locomotive, he said.Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukrainian national railways, said Russia had intensified drone attacks on railway infrastructure, and that rolling stock was among the main targets.It reported that 18 strikes had been recorded since the start of March, damaging 41 facilities.Locomotives, freight cars and specialised equipment used to repair infrastructure have also been targeted, as well as railway depots and bridges, the operator said.On Monday, a Russian drone attack on a commuter train in Dnipropetrovsk region killed ‌one person and wounded seven others.

39 dead in Spain after two high-speed trains collide

At least 39 people died in southern Spain after ‌a high-speed train derailed and collided with an oncoming one on Sunday night in one of the worst railway accidents in Europe ‌in the past 80 years.  Twelve were in ‍intensive care after the accident near Adamuz in the province of Cordoba, about 360km south of Madrid, according to emergency services. Experts studying the crash site say a faulty rail joint may be key to determining the cause of the crash. “The train tipped to one side... then everything went dark, and all I heard was screams,” said Ana Garcia Aranda, 26, who was travelling back to Madrid ‍and was being treated at a Red Cross centre in Adamuz.  Limping and wrapped in a blanket, her face covered with plasters, she described how fellow passengers dragged her out of the train covered in blood. Firefighters rescued her pregnant sister from the wreckage and an ambulance took them both to hospital. “There were people who were fine and others who were very, very badly injured.  You had them right in front of you and you knew they were going to die, and you couldn’t do anything,” she said. The collision occurred in a hilly, olive-growing region which could only be accessed by a single-track road, making it difficult for ambulances to enter and exit, Iñigo Vila, national emergency director at the Spanish ‌Red Cross, said.  Emergency teams were struggling to bring in heavy machinery that could lift the wreckage to get access to more of the dead, the Andalusia region’s President Juan Manuel Moreno said. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez cancelled his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and Transport Minister Oscar Puente visited the crash ‍site Tuesday.  Police drone footage showed how the trains came to a standstill 500 ‌metres apart. One train’s carriage was split in two, and the locomotive was crushed like a tin can. Experts studying the crash site found a broken joint on the rails, which created a gap between the rail sections that widened as trains continued to travel on the track, according to a source briefed on initial investigations into the disaster.
