The launch of the new academic year has seen strong engagement from parents with the “Wassel Eyalak” (“Take Your Children to School”) campaign, with many accompanying their children to school during the first days of classes.The scenes reflected families’ desire to share the important milestone of returning to the classroom and to provide children with emotional and moral support as they begin a new school year.From the early hours of the first school day, numerous parents were seen arriving at schools with their children, giving practical expression to the campaign’s central message: strengthening family bonds and turning the journey to school into an opportunity for meaningful communication and conversation between parents and children, away from the pressures and distractions of everyday life.The “Wassel Eyalak” campaign coincides with the start of the academic year as part of back-to-school activities.It highlights the importance of family involvement in a student’s life and seeks to broaden the understanding of parental involvement beyond monitoring academic performance and grades.The campaign encourages parents to maintain direct communication with their children, offer encouragement, listen to their concerns, and take an active interest in the details of their school day.According to experts, the sight of parents accompanying their children on the first day conveys a broader message: even a short journey to school can become a valuable daily opportunity for connection and conversation.Supporting children does not necessarily require extraordinary gestures; rather, it can be built through consistent parental presence, attentive listening, encouragement and continued engagement.Fahad al-Derham, manager of Mohamed bin Abdulaziz Al Mana Secondary School, stressed the educational and social importance of the initiative, describing it as a meaningful way to strengthen communication between parents and their children.He noted that when a father or mother takes a child to school, an otherwise ordinary journey can become an important opportunity for dialogue, closer interaction, and attentive listening.Al-Derham said that the time parents spend with their children on the way to school can be used to talk about the student’s day, offer encouragement and motivation, listen to concerns and understand what may be occupying the child’s thoughts.Such interaction, he said, can strengthen the relationship between parents and children while providing students with the family support they need to begin their school day in a positive frame of mind.He further pointed out that seemingly simple moments can have a meaningful positive impact on students, particularly at the beginning of the academic year, when children need encouragement and motivation to restore their study routines and readjust to the school environment following the holiday period.However, al-Derham stressed that the idea should not be limited to the first day or opening weeks of school.Communication and dialogue between parents and children should instead become an ongoing practice throughout the academic year, he added, with families serving as essential partners in supporting students and following their educational progress.He also emphasised the importance of ensuring that students feel their families are genuinely interested in what happens to them at school and that they have a safe space for dialogue and discussion.Al-Derham said that such an environment can strengthen students’ sense of responsibility, encourage commitment and regular attendance, and motivate them to make the most of their school day.Sustained co-operation and communication between families and schools, he added, are also key to supporting the educational process.Responsibility for monitoring and supporting students, he stressed, does not rest with schools alone but requires a genuine partnership with families to reinforce discipline, regular attendance and students’ overall engagement with their education.
