Thai police have arrested an Australian man after the body of a 17-year-old girl was discovered in a suitcase, authorities said Saturday.The suspect, who denies involvement in the teenager's alleged abduction and murder, was taken into custody after an interrogation, a police official in the resort city of Pattaya told AFP.Investigators were awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination and "other evidence" in the case before filing charges, the official said.The charges could include child abduction, murder, hiding a corpse and "abduction of a minor for sexual purposes", added the official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity.Media reports said the 46-year-old suspect was apprehended on Friday at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, where he was trying to purchase an airline ticket to Perth in Australia.CCTV footage showed the suspect entering a condo in the seaside resort of Pattaya in the early hours of Thursday along with the 17-year-old Thai girl, according to the reports.He emerged from the building several hours later, the reports said, carrying a large black suitcase which he then transported on the back of a motorbike.Police found the suitcase on Friday near a railway track, discovering the victim's body inside of it bearing signs of violence, local website Pattaya News reported.Thailand drastically cut the length of visa-free stays for tourists last month following a series of high-profile arrests of foreigners over drug offences, sex trafficking and operating unlicensed businesses. 

Judges at ‌the International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed murder charges against former Philippine President ‌Rodrigo Duterte as ⁠crimes against humanity ‌Thursday, paving the way for ‌a trial.The judges said there were "substantial grounds" to believe Duterte, 81, played a ⁠key role in the murders of 76 people and the attempted murder of two others as part of his so-called "war on drugs", which prosecutors say killed thousands of civilians in the Philippines."The available evidentiary material shows the existence of a common plan between Mr Duterte and his co-perpetrators to kill alleged criminals in the Philippines, including those perceived or alleged to ​be associated with drug use, sale or production, through violent crimes including murder," the court said.In pre-trial hearings, his lawyers argued that Duterte's public statements that he would ‌stop drugs and criminality in the ⁠Philippines and would ​tell security forces to go out and kill criminals were ​just rhetoric, meant to instil fear.In the Philippines, the office of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued a statement to say that it respected the ruling and justice must be served."Both sides stand to benefit from this. Justice for the accused if he is innocent, or justice for the victims if their rights were indeed abused," the statement said.The case will now be assigned to a trial chamber which will start planning for a trial. ‌In previous cases, it has ‌taken the ICC up to a ⁠year between the confirmation of charges and the opening of a trial.Prosecutors have ⁠said Duterte created, funded ⁠and armed death squads to target and kill suspected narcotics peddlers and users when he was in power between 2016 and 2022. He was arrested and taken to The Hague last March.Duterte has long insisted he instructed police to kill only in self-defence and has always defended the crackdown.Appeals judges at the court ​on Wednesday had dismissed a bid to throw out Duterte's trial and said the court had jurisdiction over the case.Lawyers for the octogenarian former president have also tried to argue that Duterte was unfit to stand trial because of alleged cognitive decline.But judges in the pre-trial procedure ruled the case could move forward. It is rare for international courts to find suspects, even elderly ones, wholly unfit for trial. The ICC has never found a suspect unfit ‌for trial despite ​several other defendants' petitions. 

The youngest son of Zimbabwe's former leader Robert Mugabe appeared in a ‌South African court Monday, ​charged with ‌attempted murder after a gardener ‌was ⁠shot ‌and wounded last ‌week at the Johannesburg mansion where ⁠Mugabe's son had been staying.Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe was not asked to enter a plea. The case against him and a second suspect was postponed ​until March 3 to allow for further investigations.Bellarmine Mugabe, believed to be ‌in his late ⁠20s, will remain ​in custody until his ​next court appearance, the court heard.Both men also face a charge of defeating the ends of justice, as police have yet to recover the gun allegedly used in the shooting.A lawyer for Bellarmine Mugabe, ‌Sinenhlanhla Mnguni, declined to ‌comment on ⁠his client's position on the ⁠charges, saying ⁠he would respond to Reuters later.The gardener remains in hospital following the shooting on Thursday, a police spokesperson said.Robert Mugabe ruled ​Zimbabwe for 37 years after independence from Britain in 1980. He was ousted in a military coup in 2017 and died in 2019 at a hospital in Singapore, aged 95.
