His Excellency the Minister of Culture Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad al-Thani has said that Qatar’s participation in the New Delhi World Book Fair as guest of honour reflects the role of culture and knowledge as bridges for human communication as well as the deep ties between Qatar and India. This came during HE the minister’s participation in the opening of the New Delhi World Book Fair, in the presence of Indian Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan; Minister of Culture of Spain, Ernest Urtasun; ambassador of Qatar to India, Mohammed Hassan al-Jaber; and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, Dr Ghanem bin Mubarak al-Ali; along with a lineup of officials, diplomats, and intellectuals. HE the Minister of Culture said that Qatar takes pride in being a guest of honour in this international cultural event that celebrates books as holders of collective memory, fundamental tools for creating awareness, and channels for dialogue and rapprochement among cultures. He expressed his thanks and appreciation for the Indian side’s warm reception and support for Qatar’s participation.**media[403061]**HE Sheikh Abdulrahman added that this participation reflects the strength of bilateral relations that are based on mutual respect and a shared belief in the role of culture and knowledge in interconnecting peoples, noting that investing in knowledge is a fundamental part of advancing societies and consolidating development and national security. HE the minister added that the New Delhi World Book Fair embodies books’ pivotal role in shaping human awareness and building civilisations, something that aligns with Qatar’s vision of supporting reading and the publishing industry, in addition to strengthening the presence of culture in sustainable development. For his part, the Indian minister of education highlighted Qatar’s participation as a guest of honour and said that it reflects the depth of bilateral cultural relations, enriches the book fair’s cultural programme, and boosts cultural and intellectual dialogue between the peoples of India and Qatar.**media[403062]**In turn, the Spanish culture minister said that the event is not limited to showcasing books alone; rather, it represents a vibrant space for the exchange of ideas and expertise, support for the publishing industry, and an encouragement to reading, being an essential part in creating aware societies that are capable of facing future challenges. 

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Saturday all countries should "uphold international law" after President Donald Trump announced US forces had captured Venezuela's leader Nicolas Maduro in a large-scale assault.Calling the situation "fast-moving", Starmer added that "the UK was not involved in any way in this operation" as he urged patience in order to "establish the facts"."I want to speak to President Trump, I want to speak to allies," the British leader said in brief comments aired on UK television hours after the US attack."I can be absolutely clear that we were not involved in that. And as you know, I always say and believe we should all uphold international law."Starmer added that "hopefully more information will come out" about the situation when Trump holds a press conference later Saturday.The UK has not recognised the results of the disputed 2024 election that handed Maduro a third term in power, and has called for a "peaceful, negotiated transition" of power there.Following Saturday's events, Starmer said his government's focus was on supporting around 500 British nationals thought to be in Venezuela."We're working with the (British) embassy to make sure that they are well looked after, safeguarded and get appropriate advice," he added.The Foreign Office in London on Saturday updated its advice to urge against all travel to Venezuela.It noted Venezuelan authorities had "announced a 'state of external commotion' due to air strikes on targets across the country"."This could lead to closure of Venezuelan borders and airspace," the advice added.The US actions prompted strong political reactions in Britain.Nigel Farage, leader of the hard-right Reform UK party and a longtime Trump ally, called them "unorthodox and contrary to international law"."But if they make China and Russia think twice, it may be a good thing. I hope the Venezuelan people can now turn a new leaf without Maduro," he added.But Ed Davey, leader of the centrist Liberal Democrats, urged Starmer to "condemn Trump's illegal action in Venezuela"."Maduro is a brutal and illegitimate dictator, but unlawful attacks like this make us all less safe," he added, arguing they give Russian President Vladimir Putin and China's Xi "a green light" to "attack other countries with impunity". 

Shamshad Akhtar, the first and only woman to lead Pakistan's central bank and a two-time caretaker finance minister, died at 71, the finance ministry said Saturday.She was ⁠serving as chairperson ⁠of the Pakistan Stock Exchange at the time of her death, giving her a rare role spanning Pakistan's monetary policy, fiscal management and capital markets.Akhtar was governor of the State Bank of Pakistan from 2006-09 and later led the finance ministry in caretaker governments ahead of the 2018 and 2024 general elections.Finance ⁠Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb described Akhtar as a principled and dignified voice in Pakistan's economic history, praising her integrity, professionalism and long public service."She served the country with honesty and dedication in some of the most senior economic roles," he said in a statement, offering condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.Local media reported that she died of cardiac ⁠arrest.Widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s most internationally experienced economic policymakers, Akhtar also held senior positions, including as vice-president at the World Bank and executive secretary of the UN ESCAP, and previously worked at the Asian Development Bank.Born in Hyderabad, she was educated in Karachi and Islamabad and held degrees from the University of the Punjab, Quaid-e-Azam University, the University of Sussex and the UK’s ⁠Paisley College of Technology. 

His Excellency the Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad bin Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, hosted a special farewell reception in honour of Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa al-Thani, CEO, QatarEnergy LNG, who will be retiring at the end of the year. In remarks during the reception, Minister HE al-Kaabi extended both personal and professional appreciation of Sheikh Khalid’s long and dedicated service and acknowledged his role and the impact of his leadership on QatarEnergy LNG’s outstanding milestones and achievements. HE al-Kaabi also expressed gratitude for Sheikh Khalid’s valuable contributions to the energy sector in general and to the LNG industry in particular, saying: “I have had the pleasure of working closely with Sheikh Khalid over many years, and to ensure that QatarEnergy LNG becomes, and remains, the largest LNG producer in the world. As he retires, I would like to personally thank him and to wish him the very best for the future.” Sheikh Khalid joined QatarEnergy (Qatar Petroleum at the time) in 1991, where he held several positions including Business Development Manager of Mesaieed Industrial City, and Director of Ras Laffan Industrial City. He was appointed as Qatargas Chief Executive Officer in 2010, where he led the integration of Qatargas and RasGas and later the transformation into QatarEnergy LNG. Sheikh Khalid will be succeeded as CEO by Ahmad Helal al-Muhannadi effective from January 1, 2026. Al-Muhannadi’s 25-year career stretched across RasGas, Qatargas, and QatarEnergy LNG, where he served as Chief Onshore Operations & Support Officer upon the integration and helped achieve remarkable performance in all aspects. The farewell reception was attended by members of the senior leadership team of QatarEnergy LNG.

The 11th Conference of the State Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption started in Doha Monday morning in the presence of His Excellency the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani. The conference is being attended by a large number of high level dignitaries, distinguished invitees and officials.  Held under the theme 'Shaping Tomorrow's Integrity', the conference will continue until December 19.The conference is the largest and most significant global gathering dedicated to combating corruption and promoting integrity and transparency. It brings together all 192 States Parties to the convention, in addition to over 2,500 participants representing governments, regional and international organisations, anti-corruption experts, as well as representatives of the private sector, civil society and youth.

His Excellency Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie participated on Thursday in the high-level segment of the seventh session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). The session will be held during the period of Dec. 11-12 at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya, on the theme 'Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet,' with a wide participation from representatives of countries and international organizations.HE Minister of Environment and Climate Change delivered the State of Qatar's statement before the Assembly, during which he discussed several draft resolutions related to climate change, pollution reduction, waste management, biodiversity protection and the sustainability of natural resources. The medium-term plan of UNEP was adopted.The State of Qatar's participation in UNEA-7 comes within the framework of its keenness to enhance international cooperation in confronting escalating environmental challenges, and to support UN efforts aimed at protecting the environment and achieving sustainable development, as well as to strengthen its effective commitment to multilateral action on global environmental issues.Ministry of Environment and Climate Change indicated that the outcomes of this session should contribute to guiding the course of international environmental action in the coming years, by supporting international partnerships and boosting joint efforts to achieve sustainability and protect ecosystems. 

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani sent a cable of congratulations to the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo on the occasion of his country's National Day. 

His Excellency Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi met on Tuesday with the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Shirley Ayorko Botchwey, who is visiting the country.During the meeting, the two sides discussed avenues of cooperation between the State of Qatar and the Commonwealth and ways to enhance them, particularly in the fields of diplomacy and peacebuilding. They also exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues.The meeting was attended by Director-General of the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) Fahad bin Hamad Al Sulaiti. 

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met on Monday with Foreign Minister of Iran Abbas Araghchi, who is visiting the country.During the meeting, they discussed several bilateral, regional and international issues, Iranian news agency (IRNA) said.Araghchi will also meet with several senior officials in Azerbaijan to consult and exchange views on bilateral relations between Tehran and Baku. 

The Ministry of Culture is participating in the sixth edition of the Iraq International Book Fair, which is being held from Dec. 3 to Dec. 13.The participation comes as part of the Ministry of Culture's commitment to enhancing the State of Qatar's presence in international cultural forums, reflecting the stature of Qatari culture, its openness to the Arab and global cultural scene, and supporting the country's efforts to build bridges of cultural communication among peoples.The Qatari pavilion features a collection of recent literary and intellectual publications issued by the Ministry of Culture and several Qatari publishing houses, highlighting the diversity of national cultural production and the richness of Qatar's creative movement.Jassim Ahmed Al Buainain, Director of the Libraries Department at the Ministry of Culture and Director of the Doha International Book Fair, said in a statement that the ministry's participation in the Iraq International Book Fair is a continuation of its presence at major Arab and international cultural exhibitions. He said that the Qatari participation aims to showcase Qatar's cultural landscape and exchange expertise with international cultural institutions.He added that Qatar's presence in such events reflects the ministry's vision to support the book and publishing industry, as well as to encourage Qatari writers and creatives to reach a wider audience in the Arab world and internationally.He noted that through its international participation, the Ministry of Culture is keen to strengthen cultural relations with brotherly and friendly countries, and to introduce Qatari cultural production as part of Qatar's civilizational and human presence on the global stage.This edition of the exhibition features a wide range of local, Arab, and international publishing houses, with the attendance of hundreds of publishers and cultural institutions, reinforcing the fair's position as a prominent platform for new publications and a venue that brings together authors, creators, and those interested in publishing and reading under specialized programs.The exhibition program includes a variety of cultural activities such as book signing sessions, literary evenings, intellectual seminars, and workshops focused on the publishing industry, in addition to events aimed at youth and students, and programs designed to support reading and develop cultural skills among the public.

A court in Bangladesh on Monday sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed to five years in prison on corruption charges linked to a government land project. The court also handed down a two-year prison sentence to her niece, British Labour Party lawmaker Tulip Siddiq, in the same case.Judge Rabiul Alam of Dhaka's Special Judge's Court ruled that Hasina had misused her authority while in office, while Siddiq was found guilty of using her influence to assist her mother and two siblings in obtaining a state-owned land under the Purbachal New Town project. Siddiq's mother, Sheikh Rehana, received a seven-year prison sentence and was identified as the main defendant in the case. Fourteen other suspects are also facing charges.Sheikh Hasina has been living in exile in India since being ousted in a popular uprising last year. She was sentenced to death last month over her government's violent crackdown on protesters, and had also been handed a 21-year prison sentence earlier on separate corruption charges.Siddiq, who represents London's Hampstead and Highgate constituency in the British Parliament, has denied the allegations, describing the trial as politically motivated and based on "fabricated accusations."She resigned as a British government minister in January under pressure linked to her family ties.There is no extradition treaty between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom

His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani Thursday morning attended the conclusion of the "Watan 2025" exercise.The exercise included preliminary desk-based phases, followed by field exercises simulating realistic scenarios for dealing with security challenges and emergencies.The closing ceremony was attended by HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan bin Ali Al-Thani and HE Minister of Interior and Commandor of Internal Security Forces (Lekhwiya), Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani along with a number of Their Excellencies the ministers; senior officials from participating entities; and security leaders.HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs also inaugurated the Lekhwiya camp - in Zekreet - which is preparing to host the "Arabian Gulf Security 4" exercise in early 2026, with the participation of security agencies from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
