Vonn among seven Americans set for fifth Olympics

Alpine ski star Lindsey Vonn, seeking her fourth Olympic medal at age 41, was among seven Americans named to their fifth United States Olympic team on Monday.A record 232-member squad, including 98 with prior Olympic experience, was announced by the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) for next month's Milan-Cortina Winter Games.The lineup includes Vonn, who made a comeback from knee replacement surgery in 2024. She won downhill gold and Super-G bronze in 2010 at Vancouver and took a downhill bronze in 2018 at PyeongChang.Others set to make their fifth Olympic appearance include bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor, whose five medals include three silvers and two bronzes; three-time bobsled champion Kaillie Humphries, figure skater Evan Bates, ice hockey player Hilary Knight and snowboarders Nick Baumgartner and Faye Thelen.Taylor, 41, leads the team's 33 prior Olympic medalists with five while multiple gold medalists include Humphries with three and alpine ski star Mikaela Shiffrin and snowboarder Chloe Kim with two each."Today we proudly introduce the 2026 US Olympic team - a group of extraordinary athletes whose commitment, perseverance and spirit reflect the very best of Team USA," USOPC chief executive officer Sarah Hirshland said."Congratulations to each member of this extraordinary team who have earned their chance to represent the United States on the biggest stage in sport."The 232 American Olympians include defenseman Seth Jones of the reigning NHL champion Florida Panthers, who was named to the US squad earlier this month before suffering an upper body injury and being replaced by Jackson LaCombe of the Anaheim Ducks. USOPC policy recognizes Jones as a member of the Olympic team.The largest prior US Olympic squad was 228 athletes at PyeongChang in 2018.US Chef de Mission Rocky Harris called the American lineup "a team full of proven champions and fearless newcomers that have the potential to take Team USA's winter performance to a new level and inspire a nation in the process."The US squad includes 115 women and 117 men with freeskier Abby Winterberger the youngest athlete at age 15 and curling competitor Rich Ruohonen the oldest at 54.

Minister of Municipality awarded Nobel Sustainability Medal for outstanding contribution to sustainability

His Excellency Minister of Municipality Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah has been awarded the Nobel Sustainability Trust Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability, in recognition of his efforts in advancing sustainable development initiatives, promoting smart economic systems, and fostering green and resilient urban planning. The award was presented during a ceremony organized by the Nobel Sustainability Trust in the US State of Miami, in the presence of Peter Nobel, Chairman of the Nobel Sustainability Trust, along with senior officials and distinguished guests.In his address, HE the Minister of Municipality said the recognition reflects the success of Qatar's balanced and comprehensive approach to sustainability and development under the wise leadership of HH the Amir of State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. He noted that HH the Amir's clear vision for sustainability, long-term prosperity, and integrated development has guided the country's national strategies and the establishment of modern, sustainable cities.His Excellency added that Qatar's commitment to sustainability is rooted in a firm belief in the necessity of safeguarding the environment and enhancing the proesperity of future generations, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.He noted that the Ministry of Municipality has worked to develop smart, integrated and resilient urban environments based on scientific planning, efficient land use, digital transformation, and advanced infrastructure and sustainability projects. These efforts, he said, have strengthened Qatar's position as a leading international model for balanced and sustainable development. HE the Minister of Municipality also pointed to the strategic partnership with the Nobel Sustainability Trust, which reflects Qatar's commitment to supporting international sustainability efforts, praising the Trust's role in advancing scientific and innovative solutions to global sustainability challenges.The Nobel Sustainability Trust announced in June that Qatar had been selected to host the 2026 Nobel Sustainability Awards Ceremony, praising the country's achievements in innovation and sustainability. A high-level delegation from the Trust recently visited Doha, expressing admiration for Qatar's ambitious national vision and its advanced initiatives in digital transformation, resource efficiency, and sustainable city development.

Qatar finishes 4th at the U-17 Handball World Championship, Germany claims the title

Qatar under-17 national handball team concluded its participation in the inaugural edition of the World Cup held in Morocco, finishing in fourth place after losing to Spain 23-35 in the third-place and bronze medal match on Saturday.The match between Qatar and Spain came amid high hopes of achieving a historic feat and claiming the bronze medal, after Qatar had advanced to the semifinals as the best second-placed team in the group stage.Qatar finished runner-up in Group B, earning two victories against Tunisia (38-30) and South Korea (45-24), and suffering one loss against Spain (23-41).In the semifinals, Qatar lost to Germany (22-39), which led them to play the third-place match against Spain. Despite the score difference, the Qatari players delivered a strong performance and showed great fighting spirit.Reaching the semifinals of the tournament marks a continuation of the remarkable international successes achieved by Qatari handball at various levels, most notably the silver medal won at the World Men's Handball Championship held in Doha in 2015. This achievement reflects the ongoing development of Qatar's youth programs and the national team's consistent presence among the top competitors worldwide.As for the final match, it brought together the Egyptian and German teams, and ended with Germany's victory (44-43) after extra time, during which the Germans secured the win following a marathon match full of dramatic turns.Germany led the first half (18-17) before Egypt rallied in the second half and came close to victory. However, the Germans scored an equalizer in the final seconds, then clinched the title of the inaugural edition of the championship in extra time.

Asian Shooting Championship: Qatar campaign ends on a high

Qatar’s shooting team concluded their campaign at the 16th Asian Shooting Championship on a high note, winning the silver medal in the men’s double trap team event and raising their overall tally to seven medals.The trio of Mohammed al-Rumaihi, Saeed Abu Shareb, and Rashid al-Athba delivered a strong performance, hitting 266 targets across four rounds to secure second place behind hosts Kazakhstan. India claimed the bronze.Al-Rumaihi also finished sixth in the individual double trap event.Qatar’s medal haul also included a silver from Raya Basil in the women’s trap, and five bronze medals across various team and mixed events in trap, skeet, and rifle competitions.The championship, held over two weeks in Shymkent, featured wide participation across Asia in pistol, rifle, skeet, and trap disciplines.Secretary General of the Qatar Shooting and Archery Federation, Jassim Shaheen al-Sulaiti, hailed the achievement as a result of dedicated preparation and support from the Qatar Olympic Committee, calling it “a launchpad toward broader ambitions.”
