NZ Cricket defends decision to launch domestic T20 competition

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said on Wednesday it had considered a range of expert opinions before deciding to launch a domestic T20 competition amid criticism of its handling of a Deloitte report that favoured joining Australia's Big Bash League.After NZC announced in March that NZ20 would replace the existing Super Smash provincial competition, cricket great Richard Hadlee and former NZC President Lesley Murdoch criticised what they said was a lack of transparency in the process and the body's refusal to share the Deloitte report with stakeholders.NZC Chair Diana Puketapu-Lyndon said the governing body should have done a better job explaining the decision when it announced its plans.The Deloitte report was just one of four expert reports considered by the board in making the decision, alongside analyses of community cricket, high-performance pathways and fan engagement, she added."Its analysis favoured exploring the Big Bash opportunity further, for reasons including financial upside and governance, but it also said weighing the options was for the board and encouraged us to continue exploring both options," Puketapu-Lyndon said in a statement.The board had also considered feedback from the country's six Major Associations and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association, both of which supported NZ20 ahead of seeking to put a New Zealand team in the established Australian league."When all of that was considered, alongside the board's own due diligence, the board voted unanimously, 7-0, to support NZ20 as the preferred option," said Puketapu-Lyndon.NZC said it would not release the full report, citing confidentiality."This is the biggest change to domestic cricket in a generation, and we know not everyone agrees with it," she said."NZ20 is genuinely aspirational. It has the potential to revolutionise the game of cricket in this country and ensure a sustainable future from the grassroots to the elite."NZ20 organisers had initially planned to launch the six-team competition this summer but NZC postponed the tournament until the 2027-28 home season to allow more time to establish the privately owned franchise league and accommodate the international schedule.

Algerian star Mahrez arrives in Qatar ahead of move to Al Shamal

Al Shamal have made a major statement of intent by bringing in Algerian star Riyad Mahrez, with the 35-year-old arriving in Doha on Monday to complete his move to the Qatar Stars League club.Mahrez is set to join Al Shamal on a free transfer and will undergo his medical at Aspetar on Tuesday before signing a contract that will keep him at the club until the end of the season.The move comes as Al Shamal look to build on their runners-up finish last season and mount a serious challenge for a maiden league title. The club are also seeking to strengthen their campaign in the AFC Champions League Elite.Former Manchester City winger is expected take the place of Morocco international Mohamed Rabie Hrimat, who suffered a cruciate ligament injury in Al Shamal’s second-round match against Al Gharafa.For Al Shamal, the arrival of a player with Mahrez’s experience represents a significant addition to their attacking options. The Algerian has won major honours in England and Saudi Arabia and brings more than a decade of top-level experience.Mahrez began his professional career with Quimper in 2009 before moving to Le Havre. His breakthrough came at Leicester City, where he became one of the leading figures in the club’s remarkable Premier League title triumph in 2016.He subsequently spent five seasons with Manchester City, winning four Premier League titles and helping Pep Guardiola’s side claim their first Champions League crown in 2023. Mahrez made 236 appearances for City, scoring 78 goals and providing 59 assists.In 2023, he moved to Saudi Arabia to join Al Ahli in a deal worth around $40m. During his time with the Jeddah club, he played 122 matches, scoring 37 goals and registering 50 assists, while also helping Al Ahli win the AFC Champions League Elite.Mahrez has been equally influential for Algeria. He has scored 40 goals in 199 international appearances and was part of the team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in 2019. He has also featured for Algeria at the 2014 and 2026 World Cups.

Portugal win without Ronaldo as Klopp's Germany get first victory

Portugal shrugged off the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and turned on the style to win 4-2 in Denmark in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday, while Germany beat Serbia 2-0 to give Jurgen Klopp his first win as coach. The controversy surrounding Ronaldo's departure from the Portugal squad on Wednesday overshadowed the match in Copenhagen, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's future in international football now in serious doubt. Coach Jorge Jesus said before kick-off that he just wanted his side "to focus on the match", and they did not appear distracted as they scored some superb goals to win the Group A4 clash at the Parken Stadium. AC Milan striker Goncalo Ramos scored Portugal's winner in Norway on Sunday after being preferred to Ronaldo in attack, and here he set up Joao Cancelo for Portugal's early opener before getting their second goal on 25 minutes. Mikkel Damsgaard curled in a fine goal in between for Denmark, and Rasmus Hojlund scored their second equaliser shortly after half-time. However, Vitinha headed in a superb Bruno Fernandes cross to put Portugal back in front midway through the second half, and Joao Felix -a club colleague of Ronaldo's at Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia - finished off a superb move to seal Portugal's victory. "A victory of the highest quality," said Jesus. "This Portugal team scored four goals and put in a performance which, in my opinion, was of a very high standard - and that cannot be overlooked. "Of course, this is more important than anything else that has happened." Wales beat Norway 2-1 in the same group in Cardiff, despite Fulham's Oscar Bobb giving the visitors an early lead. Goals by Daniel James and Neco Williams turned the game around for Wales, while Norway had Torbjorn Heggem sent off at the start of the second half. Portugal, who are the defending Nations League champions, are top of the group with the maximum nine points from three games before entertaining Norway in Porto on Sunday. Klopp's first two matches in charge of Germany had ended in a draw in the Netherlands and a defeat at home to Greece, but it was third time lucky as his side saw off Serbia in Munich. Bayern Munich's Tom Bischof, playing at home, opened the scoring late in the first half and Liverpool's Florian Wirtz sealed the win with a brilliantly-taken goal just past the hour mark. "The mix of football and attitude was top level today. I told the boys that this has to be our benchmark," Klopp told public broadcaster ZDF. Germany's next game is away in Greece, who top Group A2 with seven points from three outings after a 2-2 draw at home to the Netherlands in Thessaloniki on Thursday. The home side were two ahead at half-time with goals by Fotis Ioannidis and Giorgos Masouras, but skipper Virgil van Dijk pulled one back just before the hour. Substitute Tijjani Reijnders then grabbed an 89th-minute leveller for Xavi Hernandez's Dutch side, who are second in the group on five points and complete this international window at home to pointless Serbia in Eindhoven on Sunday. Elsewhere, Troy Parrott scored twice, including a stunning solo effort, as Ireland drew 2-2 at home with Austria in a game briefly interrupted on two occasions by protests. Parrott, of Real Betis, opened the scoring in style after 12 minutes of the Group B3 encounter in Dublin, before tennis balls were thrown onto the pitch by those protesting Ireland's games against Israel, forcing a break in play. Later in the first half a man carrying a Palestinian flag got on the pitch before being stopped by security. Parrott scored again from the penalty spot to double Ireland's lead by the interval, but second-half goals by Alexander Prass and Michael Gregoritsch earned Austria a draw. Ralf Rangnick's team top the section with seven points, three more than both Ireland and Kosovo, who drew 0-0 with Israel in a game played in Hungary.

Lamine Yamal netted a brace as world champions Spain continued their winning start to the UEFA Nations League with a 4-1 success in Seville against Croatia on Tuesday, while Harry Kane scored as England won in the Czech Republic.The match at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan was Spain's first home outing since lifting the World Cup in New York in July.La Roja captain Rodri was handed the trophy by 2010 winner and Sevilla legend Jesus Navas, before presenting it to the ecstatic crowd."We were very excited to bring the trophy here," Yamal said."To be able to win the game and bring it home is great."Spain's supporters did not have long to wait before their side provided further excitement in Andalusia as Yamal fired them into the lead inside 75 seconds.Dion Beljo nodded in Ivan Perisic's cross to briefly level the scores shortly before the half-hour, but Atletico defender Marc Pubill popped up at the other end three minutes later to head in a Yamal centre and restore the hosts' lead.After also scoring early in Spain's 3-2 win at Wembley against England last week to kickstart their Nations League campaign, Yamal brought his tally in the 2026/27 edition of the tournament to three as he put Spain two clear of Croatia in the 63rd minute with a precise finish at Dominik Livakovic's near post."Lamine is keen to keep developing and show the world the sort of footballer he is," Luis de la Fuente said of the 19-year-old star."We've enjoyed his magic in the service of the team. In the future, he'll be much more recognised for what he does and for his contribution to the team's play," the coach added of Yamal, who is among the frontrunners for the Ballon d'Or.Nico Williams then put gloss on the result for Spain with a crisp step-over and finish with one minute remaining on the clock.With two wins from two, Spain lead Group A3 on six points, while Croatia sit third on three points, behind second-placed England on goal difference. 'DESERVED VICTORY'In Prague, Thomas Tuchel's England got their first win of the group with a 2-0 victory over 10-man Czech Republic thanks to second-half goals from Anthony Gordon and Kane.The home team kept England at bay in the first half at the Fortuna Arena despite being a man down after Pavel Sulc was sent off for a high challenge on Elliot Anderson in the 23rd minute."We played very professional, second half we stepped up... Deserved victory," Tuchel told ITV."Strange to get an early red card, not the best for the team and spectators. It's an awkward one but we kept going, got a win and that's what counts."Barcelona winger Gordon broke the deadlock shortly after the break with a header from a cross served by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made his first England start in almost two years.It was Gordon's third goal in three games for England, including one against Argentina in the World Cup semi-final defeat and another against Spain.Kane, who also scored against Spain, gave England breathing space in the 69th minute, smashing the ball past Czech 'keeper Matej Kovar after it fell to him inside the box.England will travel to Rijeka to take on Croatia on Saturday, while Spain welcome the Czechs to Oviedo."The next match is important for us against a direct opponent and we want to win," Tuchel said to the BBC.Elsewhere, Scotland paid for an early red card at Hampden Park against Switzerland as the visitors ran out 3-0 winners in Group B1.Slovenia sit second in that pool after downing North Macedonia 2-0 in Ljubljana.

Man City could face years of legal battles after Premier League verdict, experts say

* Potential lawsuits from rival clubs expected to deepen legal fallout* Experts raise questions over sanctions, ownership and wider consequences* Most top players have relegation release clauses Manchester City's case over breaches of Premier League financial rules could run for years, lawyers say, as appeals and further claims threaten to prolong a saga that has already shaken English football's financial landscape.The Premier League said on Tuesday that City had used "sham" commercial contracts as part of schemes to inflate revenue and understate costs by more than £900 million ($1.2 billion) over nearly a decade.Even with a ruling now delivered, however, major questions remain unresolved, including when any sporting sanctions would take effect and whether an appeal by City could delay their implementation.At the heart of the case is the League's financial rulebook, which limits how much clubs can spend relative to the revenue and profits they generate. The League alleged City inflated commercial income and understated costs over a number of seasons, which would have made the club appear financially stronger and potentially enabled it to spend more on player transfers and wages while remaining within the rules.The case has hung over the Premier League for years, raising wider questions about financial governance, competitive integrity and the League's ability to hold its most powerful clubs to account."Unless the Premier League take control and bang their heads together, and say, 'right, this is it,' it could take years," Yasin Patel, a leading London-based sports law barrister, told Reuters."There's clubs now looking to sue for loss of income, a bit like the Burnley-Everton situation. That hasn't been resolved yet, there's an ongoing appeal."He was referring to the decision taken by the Premier League in June to order Everton to pay Burnley around £35 million ($47 million) in compensation for the impact of Everton breaching financial rules in 2022 when Burnley were relegated. Everton rejected the findings and their appeal is to be heard in January 2027."There's others who will have been potentially promoted. There's trophies that were lost, European places that could have been won or lost, even certain players signing for Man City, who may have been signed by Hull or wherever, they lost the opportunity of that player," Patel said. GUILTY OF ALL CHARGESAn independent commission found City guilty of all charges relating to breaches of the League's financial rules over nine seasons, as well as three of four charges concerning their failure to co-operate with the investigation.The club deny wrongdoing and have until Friday to lodge an appeal, which they have said they will do.No sanction has yet been imposed, leaving unresolved the potential consequences for a club who have dominated English football over the past decade.It is unclear whether the sanctions will be announced before the appeal is heard, and whether they would take immediate effect, with a league representative telling Reuters they could not discuss the process for confidentiality reasons."I reckon their sanctions will be heard sooner rather than later," said Patel. "But then potentially, because they'll be appealing a decision, the sanctions won't come into play until after the appeal is heard."A senior official in one of Europe's major leagues believes the issue could have major implications for the Premier League, saying that it could suffer as a product if many clubs start going after City.Alex Goodchild, a sports lawyer at Bray & Krais in London, said the various compensation claims created an "extremely messy" and complex web of proceedings."Everton-Burnley were two single clubs," he said. "In theory, you could have lots of different compensation claims being run on different tracks with different commissions... so it opens up the scope for inconsistency and fragmentation across claims."I have seen suggestions from lawyers that maybe the Premier League will try to centralise and have one single sort of compensation place for the various parties involved (similar to a class action suit)." TOP PRIORITYFootball law expert Stefan Borson thinks the appeal, which will be heard by a new three-person panel, will be the top priority."(I believe) that they've decided that the most expeditious way to get an outcome here is to say, right, there's the findings on the liability phase let's test those on appeal. Then we can come back and deal with sanction later. But then of course, probably suspended pending the appeal."Patel raised the prospect of criminal proceedings."If they're going to be saying that certain top personnel have lied and misled the Premier League, the question is then: 'Are these fit and proper owners as per the rules of the Premier League?' Are they going to say 'You are not fit and proper owners of Manchester City, and therefore you have to sell the club'."He suggested the case could move beyond the realm of football regulation."If these findings are correct, and fraud and (false) statements have (taken place), then is that a matter that should be investigated by the police?"Goodchild suggested the apparent leak of the league's decision on Friday could hand City ammunition for a procedural challenge."The leak does, to an extent, lend them some material because it is possible that an official at one of City's close rivals could have leaked this to haul Man City into the sort of court of public opinion and give them terrible publicity," he told Reuters.The prospect of relegation raises questions about City's talent-laden squad. It is common for players to have relegation release clauses in their contracts, Patel and Goodchild said, and in the event of relegation another club could buy a player's registration at a discounted price.

Rooney opposes stripping Man City's league titles over financial breaches

Wayne Rooney does not want Manchester City to be stripped of the 2011-12 Premier League title as punishment for their breaches of the competition's financial rules, believing it would be unfair for the players and staff who worked hard to win the league.Rooney was in the Manchester United squad that lost out by goal difference as City won their first English top-flight title in over four decades with a stoppage-time comeback.But after City were found guilty on 114 of 115 charges, they are facing severe potential sanctions including relegation and loss of titles, although enforcement is far off with the club expected to appeal. City have consistently denied wrongdoing.Rooney's former teammates Rio Ferdinand and David de Gea suggested they should be awarded the retrospective title in social media posts, but Rooney told the "Stick to United" podcast that United did not earn it."I wouldn't feel comfortable about accepting another Premier League medal if I'm being honest, because I don't think we deserve it. We didn't do enough that season to win the league," Rooney said in an interview released on Tuesday."I'm thinking as their players, they're there doing everything they can to win the Premier League title and in their minds they've done it."And, if those players have got no understanding of what's going on above them, then if that happened to me, if all of a sudden Manchester United have been doing the same and I'm getting my Premier League medals taken away from me, I'd be absolutely devastated."The former England forward, however, was in favour of City receiving a harsh punishment, including relegation and financial restrictions."I'd put them in the lowest league they can go in and then put restrictions on them in terms of how much money they can spend for the next three or four seasons," he said.

Premier League confirms Man City guilty of serious financial breaches

Manchester City have been found guilty of serious breaches of the Premier League's financial rules over a nine-season period between 2009 and 2018, it was confirmed on Tuesday.City were found to have arranged sham contracts with a number of commercial partners to artificially inflate the club's revenues and reduce costs, concealing the true state of their finances and avoiding breaches of Premier League and UEFA spending limits as a result.An independent commission also found the club guilty on the majority of charges in relation to their failure to co-operate with the league's investigation.No sanction has yet been imposed and City said they will appeal against the decision.But the ruling will send shockwaves through English football, with City's place in the Premier League now at risk and questions over whether titles could be stripped."The core decision establishes the facts of what happened at Manchester City during this period. It details how the club systematically broke Premier League rules for nearly a decade," Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said in a statement on Tuesday."Now we have the commission's decision, we are committed to moving swiftly through the remainder of the process, to provide certainty for the league, our clubs and fans."The commission found City arranged commercial deals whereby companies were only required to pay a portion of the relevant sponsorship fees.The remainder was funded by Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development (ADUG), which owned the club.Further arrangements, funded by ADUG, enabled the club to record lower operating expenses than they actually incurred.The schemes were found to have artificially inflated the club's revenues, and reduce its costs, by more than £900 million ($1.2 billion) during the affected period to appear to comply with financial rules.As a result, City failed to accurately report income and expenditure for the purposes of the Premier League and UEFA's financial sustainability rules.The commission found they would have breached spending limits "by a very substantial amount" if City had reported accurately. CITY SET TO APPEAL In addition, the club were found to have "made concerted efforts to stop and frustrate the Premier League" during a four-year investigation."It's incredibly serious, the Premier League report is incredibly stark," said the British government's culture, media and sport secretary Lisa Nandy.Since a 2008 takeover from Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, vice-president and deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, City have become the Premier League's dominant force.They have won eight Premier League titles, four FA Cups and seven League Cups over the past 15 years and also won the Champions League for the first time in 2023.But that same year they were charged by the Premier League on over 100 charges following an investigation into alleged breaches of rules.A hearing by an independent commission started in September 2024 and concluded three months later.The club expressed "surprise" at the decision and vowed to continue fighting to clear their name."Manchester City FC will now pursue the appeal avenues open to it, on the basis that the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe," the club said in a statement.According to Premier League rules, the sanction can vary from a points deduction, a fine or even expulsion from the division.Everton and Nottingham Forest were handed points deductions in the 2023/24 season for single breaches of financial sustainability rules.On that basis, City would face likely relegation if the same penalty is applied for over 100 charges.

France snatch late winner in Belgium, Italy thrash Turkey 4-1 away

* Olise strikes in 88th minute to keep Zidane's winning start intact* Italy score three times by 27th minute before beating Turkey 4-1 in Bursa* Sweden top Group B4 on six points, two ahead of Bosnia   France substitute Michael Olise scored two minutes from time as the visitors snatched a late 1-0 win against Belgium in the Nations League on Monday, while Italy returned to winning ways with a thumping 4-1 away triumph over Turkey.Fortunes ebbed and flowed in Brussels but Olise kept up France coach Zinedine Zidane’s winning start to his new job with a surging run from midway inside the Belgian half before a superb finish to win the Group A1 fixture.France were without captain Kylian Mbappe and Zidane made nine changes to the side that edged Turkey 1-0 last week but it was after bringing on the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Rayan Cherki and Olise that the French turned the game in their favour."We played a good game, we deserved to win, and we are all relieved by Michael’s goal," said France debutant Lucas da Cunha. "My performance? The coach gave me his full confidence and told me to express myself, to do what I do at club level. I felt good on the pitch."Desire Doue was a persistent danger as he took on the home defence and twice hit the woodwork but Belgium will rue the opportunities they spurned with Mika Godts outstanding for them."It is a pity, especially because the goal came so late. We created chances ourselves, looked dangerous, and gave very little away. A draw would have been a fairer result," said Belgium centre back Brandon Mechele.Italy lost last Friday’s opening fixture of their Nations League campaign 2-0 at home to Belgium in a false start for Roberto Mancini on his return to the coaching job, but in the rain in Bursa they looked a very different outfit.Alessandro Bastoni gave the visitors a ninth-minute lead from a corner and 13 minutes later Davide Frattesi pounced on a rebound after Michael Kayode’s shot from the left was parried by goalkeeper Altay Bayındır.Italy were 3-0 up in the 27th minute as debutant Kayode hit home a low effort and the visitors finished the half with 10 attempts such was their dominance. FRENETIC GAME IN THE RAIN IN TURKEYThe frenetic nature of the game continued after the break as Barıs Alper Yılmaz pulled one back for Turkey, who made three substitutions at halftime, but Italy’s three-goal advantage was restored as Pio Esposito headed home a fourth in the 50th."The team played well, pressed high, kept possession and played the ball through. We had to focus on this match, which was a difficult one," said Mancini, whose team go to Paris on Friday to face the French.Bosnia registered an emphatic 4-2 win away to Romania in Bucharest in Group B4 as former great Gheorghe Hagi suffered another setback on his return to the manager's post.But Sweden lead the group two points above Bosnia after a second home win, this time 3-1 over Poland in Stockholm.The two Group B2 fixtures ended goalless with Ukraine away in Georgia and Northern Ireland home to Hungary.Montenegro's Aleksa Latkovic scored a last-minute winner as they won 3-2 in Armenia to move three points clear of their opponents on six points atop Group C2 where Latvia and Cyprus drew 0-0 in Riga to each pick up their first point.
