Qatar's economy is set to sustain robust growth averaging 4% over the medium term, driven by major LNG expansion and successful reform implementation, the International Monetary Fund has said.Amid economic and geopolitical shocks, Qatar has continued to demonstrate "resilience", underpinned by a favourable economic outlook, with growth projected to average 4% in the medium term, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF)."Qatar has shown strong resilience amid economic and geopolitical challenges, supported by sound macroeconomic management, the significant expansion of LNG (liquefied natural gas) production over the medium term, and strong non-hydrocarbon economic growth amid reform implementation guided by the Third National Development Strategy (NDS3)," said Nathan Porter, who led the IMF team to Doha ahead of the Article IV consultation.Economic growth recovered to 2.4% in 2024, strengthened further to around 3% through the third quarter of 2025, and is expected to average around 4% in the medium term, he said.Qatar's proven commitment to growth-friendly fiscal consolidation, accelerating revenue and expenditure reforms, and anchoring the medium-term fiscal framework to intergenerational equity would all support fiscal sustainability and resilience, the Bretton Woods organisation said.Although risks to the growth outlook include a global growth slowdown, tighter financial conditions, geopolitical tensions, and long-term uncertainty over LNG market oversupply and climate stress, he said on the upside, gains from accelerated reforms and LNG production expansion could "boost growth more than expected".Highlighting that fiscal and external current account surpluses are set to continue in the medium term, he said the fiscal stance remains consistent with a level that ensures intergenerational equity, and broadly prudent spending plans are envisaged under the 2026 budget."The positive economic outlook provides an opportunity to accelerate revenue diversification, especially by introducing a value-added tax; enhance spending efficiency; improve transparency of domestic gas pricing; and continue reorienting public spending to support reforms facilitating private sector growth," he said.The IMF official said adopting a full-fledged medium-term fiscal framework, with a fiscal anchor aimed at ensuring intergenerational equity and complemented by greater transparency and risk management, would enhance fiscal sustainability and support economic transformation.Recent pension reforms are welcome and should be supported by enhanced actuarial transparency to support fiscal planning, he said.Building on its achievements so far, Qatar's efforts to transition to a diversified, knowledge-based economy guided by the NDS3 should prioritise building and retaining human capital, enhancing the skills and private sector employment of nationals, fostering innovation including digitalisation and AI (artificial intelligence) capabilities, easing SMEs' (small and medium enterprises) access to finance, and promoting trade diversification, he said."Realising the ambitious goals of NDS3 calls for careful and strategic implementation and reform sequencing," Porter said, adding that enhancing data availability and quality would also support the analysis and development of ongoing and future plans and the path forward. 

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) organised a number of sporting events and activities as part of the National Sport Day celebrations, held at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex. His Excellency the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie took part at the activities alongside the assistant undersecretaries of the ministry, in addition to department directors, who joined employees in the activities in an atmosphere characterised by interaction and positive spirit. The events included various activities such as padel and tennis, walking and fitness exercises, with notable participation from ministry employees and their children. The ministry was keen to provide a fully integrated organisational environment that observes safety and comfort standards to ensure a safe sporting experience for participants, reflecting the level of readiness and organisation in the implementation of its public events. Accordingly, HE Dr al-Subaie stressed that National Sport Day represents an important national occasion for reinforcing concepts of quality of life, raising awareness of the importance of adopting healthy and sustainable lifestyles, and building a more active society. He noted that the ministry views sports as a supportive element in enhancing job performance efficiency, improving the work environment, and strengthening employees’ psychological and physical well-being, considering such initiatives as contributing to the creation of a positive and motivating workplace. Dr Farhoud Hadi al-Hajri, director of the Public Relations and Communication Department at the ministry, affirmed that National Sport Day represents a unifying national occasion reflecting the state’s concern for human health and its commitment to entrenching a culture of sports practice in society as a fundamental element in building individuals and enhancing their capacity for contribution and productivity.

Airports in the Middle East are witnessing a fundamental shift in retail dynamics, with younger travellers emerging as the new big spenders, according to an official of the Airports Council International (ACI).Stefano Baronci, director general of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, noted that the findings stem from ACI’s latest retail travel report, unveiled during the Trinity Forum in Doha last week.“Passengers in the Middle East are still very much willing to spend at airports, but only where value, relevance, and convenience are immediately clear,” Baronci told Gulf Times in an exclusive interview.He said, “The key shift is that passenger mix and contextual relevance now matter far more than sheer footfall. In other words, higher volumes alone no longer guarantee stronger retail performance; what matters is who the passengers are, why they are travelling, and how well the retail offer aligns with their needs and expectations.”Baronci explained that generational differences are reshaping strategies across the region, noting that Gen Z and Millennials are more price-aware, digitally fluent, and intolerant of static retail environments, yet they are also the highest-value cohorts when engaged effectively.“Our research shows that Gen Z and Millennial international travellers, particularly in non-economy cabins, record the highest average spend and exhibit a markedly higher propensity to purchase luxury goods, perfumes, and premium cosmetics, concentrating a significant share of their spend in high-value discretionary categories. They expect fast, self-directed journeys, clear value propositions, and brands that feel authentic rather than generic,” he further stated.On the other hand, Baronci pointed out that older travellers are more conservative. “Boomers and Gen X account for a disproportionate share of non-spenders, and when they do purchase, they tend to favour familiar, lower-risk categories such as confectionery, gifting items, and travel staples, prioritising trust, clarity, and efficiency over novelty or experience,” he emphasised.Baronci stated that this divergence means airports must abandon a one-size-fits-all approach: “Future strategies will need to balance convenience-led, value-signposted offers and strong confectionery and gifting propositions for older cohorts, alongside digitally enabled, premium-curated, and experience-light luxury concepts for younger travellers. The challenge is less about adding more retail and more about aligning category mix, pacing, and presentation with who is travelling through the terminal at any given time.”Asked about the Trinity Forum, Baronci said the industry is moving decisively toward experience-led commercial design. “Airports are moving decisively toward experience-led commercial design, recognising that relevance, ease, and emotional engagement now matter as much as square metres and category density,” he said.Baronci also said, “Equally important is the push for stronger alignment between airports, airlines, and retailers, particularly around passenger flow, dwell time, and data sharing. Participants consistently highlighted that fragmented incentives slow innovation, while closer coordination enables faster responses to shifting passenger profiles and demand patterns.”He added that data-driven agility will define the next phase, noting that airports are increasingly using passenger insight and real-time performance data to adjust layouts, offers, and commercial strategies with greater speed and precision. Taken together, Baronci emphasised that these themes point to a future where agility, collaboration, and experience design will be central to global airport strategies over the next five years.On Qatar’s role as host and significance in this year’s Trinity Forum, Baronci said: “Qatar’s involvement significantly elevates the standing of the Trinity Forum because it provides a living reference point for what integrated excellence looks like at scale.”He added: “Hamad International Airport and Qatar Duty Free exemplify how connectivity, premium passenger experience, and operational discipline can be aligned within a single, coherent ecosystem, rather than treated as separate objectives.” 

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas called Wednesday for a "firm response" from the US and the international community to Israel's plan to tighten its control of the occupied West Bank.During a visit to Oslo, Abbas said he had discussed the issue with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, as well as those of Israeli settler violence and Israel's freezing of "$4bn" intended for the Palestinian people."These serious violations require a firm response from the US administration and the international community because they hinder (US) President (Donald) Trump's efforts and constitute a violation of international law," Abbas told reporters.On Sunday, Israel's security cabinet approved a series of measures that would allow Israel to expand its control in areas administered by the Palestinian Authority under the Oslo accords in place since the 1990s.The plans, which have sparked international outrage, would also allow Israelis to buy West Bank land directly and allow Israeli authorities to administer certain religious sites even when they are located in areas under Palestinian Authority control.Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967.Excluding Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, more than 500,000 Israelis live in settlements and outposts across the West Bank, which are illegal under international law.Around 3mn Palestinians live in the territory.

His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani met Thursday with Chancellor of Federal Republic of Germany Friedrich Merz. The meeting discussed co-operation relations between the two countries and ways to support and strengthen them. In addition, it discussed a number of topics of common interest. Chancellor Friedrich Merz left Doha Thursday, following an official visit to the country. Chancellor Merz and the accompanying delegation were seen off upon departure from Hamad International Airport by His Excellency the Minister of Commerce and Industry Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal al-Thani, ambassador of Qatar to Germany Abdullah bin Ibrahim al-Hamar and ambassador of Germany to Qatar Oliver Owcza. 

Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah will be bidding for a record-breaking 19th victory from 26 starts when this weekend’s Qatar International Rally gets underway from the Lusail Sports Complex Thursday afternoon. The in-form Qatari began his challenge for an unprecedented 21st FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) title with victory in Oman two weeks ago and has now switched his attention to securing a staggering 93rd career MERC rally win on the three-day event being hosted by the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF). Al-Attiyah and co-driver Candido Carrera top a 23-car field with strength in depth and will be looking to start their weekend’s campaign with a strategic performance on the new Qualifying Stage Thursday. This will determine the starting order for Friday’s opening special stage. The outcome of the Qualifying Stage will be the deciding factor to which of the Rally2 crews opens the road, acts as a road sweeper and faces the slight disadvantage of clearing loose sand and gravel off the racing line. In the past, the leader of the championship has opened the road regardless and al-Attiyah may well be able to take advantage of the new addition to the regulations to strengthen his challenge in an Autotek Skoda Fabia RS. Abdullah al-Rawahi is back from serious injury and pushed al-Attiyah hard in his native Oman last month. Punctures ultimately dropped him to second place and out of victory contention, but the Omani is better prepared for this rally and is hopeful that he has a good set-up on his Skoda Fabia RS to apply the pressure on al-Attiyah from the outset. The former regional champion teams up with Jordanian co-driver Ata al-Hmoud. Local driver Abdulaziz al-Kuwari was not present at the opening round but stayed in match fitness with a strong performance at last weekend’s Saudi Baja. He teams up with his brother Nasser in a Skoda Fabia RS and will be striving for the podium on a rally he won in 2012. This will only be the third special stage rally in Hamza Bakhashab’s short career but the Saudi showed in Oman that he has the pace to reach the podium. He admitted at the press conference on Tuesday evening that working efficiently with accurate pace notes had cost him dearly at the opening round when he crashed out of third place, but he and Irish co-driver Lorcan Moore are determined to come back even stronger this weekend in their Jameel Motorsport Toyota GR Yaris Rally2. Engine issues sidelined Mohammed al-Marri in Oman but the QMMF-backed driver has switched to a Citroën C3 this weekend and will make his debut in the Rally2 class with Frenchman Pierre Delorme reading his pace notes. Veteran Nasser Khalifa al-Atya began his 2026 campaign with a podium finish in Oman, as he tries to retain the FIA Master Driver trophy he won last season. The Qatari again teams up with Lebanese co-driver Ziad Chebab in a Motortune-run Ford Fiesta. Jweihan aims to extend his FIA MERC2 advantageShaker Jweihan was the class of the MERC2 field at round one with his fellow Jordanian co-driver Mustafa Juma and the youngster is determined to maintain the momentum in Qatar. “We have made a strong start to the season and, yes, the goal is to keep it going and push for another win,” said the Mitsubishi driver. His closest rivals in Oman were the Kuwaiti duo of Jassim al-Muqahwi and Sulaiman al-Helal, who finished fifth overall and picked up points for second in MERC2. Jordan’s Sami Fleifel was third and he teams up with Yazan Juma to continue his push for MERC2 honours. A cruel retirement cost Oman’s Zakariya al-Aamri (Subaru) valuable points on round one but he will be hoping to be in the mix with navigator Mohammed al-Mazrui on Qatar’s abrasive gravel terrain. Further MERC2 competition comes from the Indian duo of Mohamed Mansoor Parol and Lenin Joseph and Lebanon’s Charbel Chebly and Carlos Hanna in a pair of Mitsubishis. Rashid al-Muhannadi and Gary McElhinney are the defending FIA MERC4 champions, but their title defence ground to a halt with engine issues in Oman. The QMMF-backed Qatari will be looking to bounce back strongly with a category win this weekend, although he faces strong competition from a quartet of Qatari drivers in similar Peugeot 208 Rally4s and the Indian duo of Payyaakkal Panikkaveettil and Musa Sherif in a Ford Fiesta. The QMMF has offered support to Ahmed al-Kuwari, Nouef al-Sowaidi, Khalifa Saleh al-Attiyah and Ahmad Shaheen al-Muhannadi to boost the flagship two-wheel drive category. They have teamed up with their respective co-drivers, Baptiste Cerrato, Aisvydas Paliukenas, Laos Savvas and Taha al-Zadjali. The Lebanese pairing of Shadi El Fakih and Joseph Kmeid wheel out their Rally5 Renault Clio at the rear of the field behind four SSVs that are also eligible for the regional rally championship. Mohammed al-Atteya and Mirko Carrara drive a pair of Can-Ams and Christiano Gabbarrini and Mario Marotta wheel out two Yamaha YXZ 1000Rs built by Quaddy Racing. Thursday’s competitive timetable opens with a 75-minute practice session through a new 5.56km special for Rally2 cars at Al Khor from 10.00hrs. This will also act as the new qualifying stage for Rally2 crews, starting at 11.45hrs. The result of that will determine the starting order for leg one. The slowest driver in the qualifying stage will run as the first Rally2 entrant on the road Friday. Non-Rally2 machines will be permitted a maximum of two passes apiece during a shakedown on the Al Khor stage from 12.30hrs until 14.15hrs. The ceremonial start will then take centre stage adjacent to the service park in the grounds of the Lusail Sports Complex.
