The Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), has welcomed imec, a world-leading research and innovation hub in advanced semiconductor technologies, as newest member of its community.The milestone marks a defining step in building Qatar’s semiconductor ecosystem and strengthens the country’s position as a regional hub for advanced technology development.This follows the announcement at Mobile World Congress Doha 2025, where imec revealed plans to establish a regional presence in Qatar and signed a formal agreement with Invest Qatar and the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council, in the presence of government officials and technology industry leaders.The expansion of imec into Qatar represents a significant milestone in its international growth and reflects the strength of Qatar’s innovation ecosystem.Through its partnership with the QSTP, imec will leverage the QF’s research, education, and innovation network to advance research and development (R&D) into advanced compute and chip design, supporting the development of a robust regional semiconductor landscape.“We are proud to welcome imec to the Qatar Science & Technology Park,” QSTP president Rama Chakaki said. “This partnership brings world-class semiconductor research and innovation to the region and reinforces our mission to position Qatar as a leading hub for technology, talent development, and collaboration.”Max Mirgoli, the chief global development, partnerships and venturing officer and executive vice-president at imec, said: “imec Qatar is being built as a platform for shared innovation. Through close collaboration with the QSTP and the QF ecosystem, we are creating an environment where talent development, academic‑industry partnerships, and regional collaboration come together.”“Our goal is to contribute meaningfully to the Gulf’s emerging high‑tech landscape by connecting local ambition with global expertise,” he said.At the QSTP, imec’s regional hub will focus on advanced computer architectures, artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled chip design, and emerging semiconductor technologies, including silicon photonics, 3D integrated circuits, and advanced packaging solutions.Researchers will explore next-generation design workflows and the application of generative and agent-based AI to accelerate semiconductor innovation.These efforts will support the development of more efficient digital and energy infrastructure aligned with regional sustainability priorities.Embedded within the QSTP’s innovation ecosystem of nearly 400 research, technology, and innovation entities, the imec hub will foster collaboration with industry, academia and startups by co-locating advanced research capabilities to accelerate technology adoption, enable applied research, and support the commercialisation of breakthrough semiconductor solutions. 

Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, met separately Monday with Imec Centre executive vice-president and chief Global Development, Partnerships and Venturing officer Max Mirgoli, and Imagine Institute for Genetic Diseases director Dr Bana Jabri, on the sidelines of Web Summit Qatar 2026. They discussed avenues of collaboration across research, medicine, technology, and innovation.  

Belgium’s imec, a world leader in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, is looking to establish a presence in Qatar as part of its global expansion — a move expected to accelerate the nation’s drive to build a high-tech, AI-powered innovation ecosystem. imec president and CEO Luc Van den hove told Gulf Times in an exclusive interview that Qatar’s fast-rising digital landscape and investment in advanced technology make it an ideal partner for cutting-edge R&D collaboration in semiconductors, health tech, and communications. These trends, according to him, create exciting opportunities for collaboration and innovation, strongly aligned with Imec’s mission to drive progress in scalable compute solutions for AI and semiconductor-based innovations in application domains such as healthcare, communications and energy. The company would focus on R&D (research and development) in advanced compute architecture for applications as high-performance computing, communications systems, automotive and AI (artificial intelligence); AI-enabled ASIC design (bringing IC-Link’s chip design expertise to the region), and chip-based innovation in application domains like health, automotive and AI. "We believe that opening a regional R&D site will help us make a meaningful contribution to that transformation," he said, adding expanding into new regions strengthens Imec’s innovation pipeline, diversifies partnerships, and accelerates technology maturity in real-world environments. imec was invited by Invest Qatar and the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council to explore establishing a presence in the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP). "This invitation reflects confidence in Imec’s expertise and offers a chance to collaborate on building a semiconductor ecosystem, fully in line with our internationalisation strategy," he said. The timing reflects several converging factors as strong regional focus on AI, and digitalisation, the Gulf countries' ambitions in advanced semiconductor development, and a unique chance to scale Imec’s impact through global collaboration and local capacity building. "When Imec expands to new regions, it brings significant added value by connecting local ecosystems to its global network of partners, advanced R&D infrastructure, and deep expertise in semiconductor innovation," he said. Aligned with Qatar’s strengths and ambitions, its presence in Qatar will focus on innovation in semiconductor technologies and fields like AI, health, automotive, energy infrastructure, to accelerate regional innovation, supporting workforce development through collaborations with universities and offering training programmes, and boosts local start-up landscapes. "Therefore, our presence and activities are expected to support job creation, attract investment, and potentially stimulate new ventures," Luc Van den hove said.imec is fully supportive of Qatar’s AI ambitions and will contribute to its efforts as Qatar lays the foundation for its emerging AI and compute focus, according to him. Although Imec is not committing financial investments in the initiative, instead, its involvement is "strategic", advancing innovation through knowhow in advanced semiconductor technologies, and supporting the development of a regional high-tech ecosystem through workforce development, university collaborations and by connecting Qatar’s ecosystem to its vast network. "This initiative is fully aligned with Imec’s internationalisation strategy and global way of working. It reinforces Imec’s role as a leading R&D hub, creating opportunities for collaboration, talent development, and knowledge exchange in a region investing heavily in digital transformation," he said. imec Qatar will be an integrated part of its global strategy and activities, closely connected to our state-of-the-art research facilities at the headquarters in Belgium. "The focus of Imec Qatar will be on chip design and compute architectures, leveraging Imec’s process technology and system knowhow," he said. Asked how hyperscalers, which are fast making inroads into the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Qatar, would be beneficial for Imec Qatar; he said they (hyperscalers) are part of its ecosystem and "we intend to further expand our collaboration towards them to better address advanced technology challenges to further drive AI-innovation." Highlighting that Imec’s role is to lead the synchronisation of these innovation efforts; he said "their presence and ours in the GCC will strengthen and accelerate the region’s innovation ecosystem, positioning Qatar as a regional leader in high-tech R&D and semiconductor innovation."Regarding nurturing of semiconductor talent through development programmes; Luc Van den hove said Imec will nurture semiconductor talent through development programmes, internships, and PhD initiatives in collaboration with universities, companies, and startups, across various industries. "These efforts contribute to establishing a robust semiconductor talent pipeline in the region," he added. 

imec, a global leader in nano-electronics and digital innovation, Tuesday unveiled its plans to launch a regional research and development (R&D) hub in Qatar in early 2026.Supported by Invest Qatar, the country’s investment promotion agency, and the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council (QRDI), the centre will leverage Qatar’s state-of-the-art infrastructure to drive innovation and technology-led growth, while serving as a regional hub to expand imec’s footprint across the Gulf.On the sidelines of Mobile World Congress in Doha, imec signed an agreement with Invest Qatar and QRDI to establish a dedicated R&D hub in Qatar, supported by the government of Qatar.The signing was witnessed by His Excellency Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal al-Thani, the Minister of Commerce and Industry; His Excellency Mohammed bin Ali al-Mannai, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, and Dr Abdulaziz bin Nasser bin Mubarak al-Khalifa, Secretary-General of the National Planning Council.Located in Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), imec’s R&D facility will focus on accelerating the digital transformation and bringing IC-Link by imec’s chip design expertise to Qatar and the broader Middle East.The regional hub will support the creation of essential design tools – known as process design kits (PDKs) – for emerging technologies like silicon photonics, 3D integrated circuits, and silicon interposers. Additionally, it will explore innovative design workflows and the use of generative and agent-based AI (artificial intelligence) in the development of custom chips (ASICs).Furthermore, imec will focus on developing advanced AI solutions to optimise infrastructure, and deep-tech innovations targeting applications for a sustainable society.imec will also nurture semiconductor talent through development programmes, internships, and PhD initiatives in collaboration with universities, companies, and startups, across various industries. These efforts, which build on imec’s proven model of open innovation, contribute to establishing a robust semiconductor talent pipeline in the region.imec’s Qatar hub will start hiring immediately and aims to reach 100 employees by 2030. Roles will include site management, R&D, research engineering and support positions.“After growing our footprint across Europe, the USA and Asia, we are proud to add another chapter to our internationalisation strategy with the launch of our Qatar hub. With this regional hub, we aim to contribute to the region’s growing momentum in semiconductor innovation and its broader shift toward a diversified, sustainable economy,” said Luc Van den hove, imec’s president and chief executive officer.As the region invests in advanced compute and energy technologies, and advanced chip design, he said it is committed to supporting this transformation through deep tech expertise, regional talent development, and partnerships built on mutual respect and global collaboration.Sheikh Ali Alwaleed al-Thani, chief executive officer of Invest Qatar, said this partnership with imec is a testament to the strength of Qatar’s investment ecosystem and world-class infrastructure in attracting global industry leaders.“We look forward to supporting imec in deepening its footprint in Qatar and expanding in the region, while jointly accelerating our national innovation agenda and creating new opportunities for talent development and high-tech investment,” he added.Partnering with imec marks an important milestone in positioning Qatar as a hub for R&D-driven innovation and a trusted node in the global technology ecosystem, according to Omar Ali al-Ansari, Secretary-General, QRDI Council.
