Ryanair looks to freeze wages, hike fares as fuel prices soar

Irish no-frills airline Ryanair said it would launch a cost-cutting drive and hike fares next year to help offset the impact of soaring jet fuel prices driven by the Middle East war.Chief executive Michael O'Leary said Ryanair's fuel bill is expected to rise by 2.0bn euros ($2.24bn) in its next financial year, which could prompt cost-saving measures such as temporary pay freezes, lower cabin crew ratios and greater use of artificial intelligence in back-office operations.The announcement came as profit after tax fell six percent to 1.61bn euros in its second quarter, or three months to end-September, from one year earlier, the Dublin-based carrier said in a statement.Ryanair, which is Europe's biggest airline by passenger numbers and flies mainly across the continent, said the cost of fuel not subject to advance purchase agreements had soared owing to the US-Iran war."Unless there is a swift resolution of the Middle East conflict, we expect jet-fuel prices to remain elevated well into 2027," O'Leary said in an earnings statement.For its current financial year to the end of March, Ryanair has hedged 80% of its fuel needs at around $67 a barrel, well below current market levels.But for 2027-2028, only a quarter of its needs are hedged so far, at a higher price of around $95 a barrel -- still below present costs.Ryanair gave few details regarding its plans to slash costs, while British union Unite insisted it had "a multi-year pay deal" with the carrier which covers its members for 2027.Unite national officer Oliver Richardson added in a statement that "a number of unions across Europe have the same" agreement and that his union's deal is not "attached to, nor dependent on company performance"."This was something that Ryanair was at pains to emphasise. As such we would expect it to be honoured."Ryanair added that its revenue increased four percent to 5.7bn euros in its second quarter.While passenger traffic grew five percent, fares fell two percent as the war led to consumer hesitancy and later bookings.However, O'Leary said that fares would have to rise next year to cope with rising fuel costs."We're certainly looking at double-digit (percentage) fare increases across Europe from all airlines in 2027," he said in a video released alongside the second-quarter earnings.Dan Coatsworth, head of markets at AJ Bell, said "many airlines have navigated this year's oil price spike thanks to forward hedging, having locked in large swathes of fuel costs before the Iran war"."Those hedges will soon roll off, meaning the airline industry faces significant cost pain."Coatsworth added that "travellers should brace themselves for a sharp increase in the cost of flying unless oil prices fall substantially".Ryanair already announced it would reduce its winter schedule in response to higher fuel costs.The airline expects to carry 214mn passengers in its current fiscal year, up 3% from 2025/26.O'Leary said it was too early to provide full-year profit guidance, which remains "highly sensitive to... conflict escalation in the Middle East and Ukraine" fuel prices, macroeconomic shocks and European air traffic control strikes.

Fares, Ikhlef lead Qatar's Asian Games weightlifting hopes

Fares Ibrahim will lead Qatar's medal hopes in weightlifting at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, with the Tokyo Olympic champion looking to add another continental medal to his impressive collection when the competition gets underway in Japan from September 19 to October 4.Fares will be joined by promising Ouisal Ikhlef, who has been showing encouraging progress and is regarded as one of the emerging talents in Qatari weightlifting.The duo will be determined to restore Qatar to the Asian Games podium after the national team endured a disappointing campaign at Hangzhou 2022, where it failed to win a medal. Qatar has enjoyed a proud tradition in Asian Games weightlifting, winning three medals across three editions - one gold and two silver.The first came at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, when Asaad Saeed Saif claimed gold in the 105kg category. He produced a total lift of 417.5kg, with 192.5kg in the snatch and 225kg in the clean and jerk, in a performance that announced Qatar's arrival among the continent's leading weightlifting nations.Four years later, Jaber Saeed Salem added a silver medal on home soil at the 2006 Doha Asian Games. Competing in the over-105kg category, Salem lifted a total of 410kg, including 185kg in the snatch and 225kg in the clean and jerk, to finish second behind renowned Iranian champion Hossein Rezazadeh after a closely contested battle. **media[488695]**Qatar's most recent Asian Games medal came at Jakarta-Palembang 2018, when Ibrahim won silver in the 94kg category. Fares lifted a combined 381kg, comprising 166kg in the snatch and 215kg in the clean and jerk, to finish behind Iran's Sohrab Moradi, who had set a world record at the time.That silver marked an important turning point in Fares' career. It provided further momentum for the young lifter, who went on to achieve the biggest success of his career by winning Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020.Now an experienced lifter, Fares will return to the Asian Games carrying the expectations of a nation and the experience of competing on the biggest stages. Alongside him, Ikhlef will be looking to make her mark and underline her potential as one of Qatar's rising weightlifting stars.Ikhlef’s most recent milestone came at the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Gandhinagar, India. Facing a top-class field, she delivered an exceptional performance to claim two silver medals (Clean & Jerk and Total) and one bronze medal (Snatch) in the 86kg+ category.Notably, Ikhlef out-lifted South Korea’s world No. 2-ranked Park Hye-jeong to secure her spot on the continental podium. She registered personal bests across the board, lifting 130kg in the Snatch and 169kg in the Clean & Jerk for a total score of 299kgIn late 2025, Ikhlef staged a flawless campaign at the Combined Doha Championships. Competing simultaneously across three tournaments — the Qatar International Cup, the Arab Championships, and the West Asian Championships—she swept a staggering nine gold medals, topping competitors from heavyweights like Thailand and South Korea.

Asal to take on Coll in Qatar Classic final

World No 1 Mostafa Asal is one win away from winning a first QTerminals Qatar Classic title after downing fellow Egyptian Fares Dessouky in Friday’s semi-finals.Dessouky was appearing in his first major semi-final since May 2021 but ran into an opponent in red-hot form with Asal winning 11-4, 11-6, 11-6 in 42 minutes.Asal, who won the Egyptian Open title last month, has now reached his ninth successive PSA final and will take on World No 3 Paul Coll in final.Asal had only lost once to Dessouky in his last six matches coming into the match and he continued where he left off in front of the Great Pyramid of Giza last month.Coll hasn’t beaten Asal in their six previous matches, with their last match seeing Asal win in straight games in the semis of last season’s PSA World Championships.“Credit to Fares, he’s a good fighter and he can beat anyone when he’s on form,” said Asal. “He could be a World No.1 easily. I know how dangerous he is, so I had to put work into him in the beginning.“It will be a tough battle tomorrow and I know the crowd will be on my side tomorrow. It feels like home here and you see so many familiar faces and family friends.”Coll reached his third final in Qatar after a convincing victory over England’s rising star Jonah Bryant. Coll suffered a shock defeat to World No 252 Adam Hawal in round two of the Egyptian Open last month, but the 33-year-old has bounced back in the best possible way, with an 11-5, 11-3, 11-5 win over Bryant sending him through to a 49th PSA final.Bryant was appearing in his first Platinum semi-final after his titanic battle with Abdulla al-Tamimi was cut short yesterday due to a suspected Achilles rupture sustained by the Qatari No 1 in the decider. It followed up a hugely impressive win over World Junior Champion Mohamad Zakaria in the round prior to that, but today’s match against Coll proved a step too far for the 20-year-old.Both players train together as part of Rob Owen’s coaching stable, but Coll came out firing and dictated the tempo of the match, sapping the energy from the youngsters legs to win in three.“I wanted to make it all about me and go out there and play my game,” said Coll.“I had a big one last night but woke up feeling pretty good. I can’t think about that, I know how tough he is and what he possesses, I knew he was never going to give up, so I had to stay on it.“I’m super proud of him. He’s continuously putting in work and looking for ways to improve. He has one of the best attitudes in a young guy I’ve seen for a while, I’ve got massive respect for him.”
