Amid regional tensions prompting some expatriates to reconsider their plans, Swedish community leader Ann Williams says Qatar’s safety, strong leadership and community spirit have strengthened her decision to remain.Williams, who has lived in Qatar for almost 10 years, serves as president of the Swedish Association in Qatar and founder of the Happy People Doha business group. She also hosts the Agents of Happiness radio show while working with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy.Reflecting on her first visit to Qatar in 2015, Williams recalled how a short stopover left a lasting impression. “The minute I came out of the airport and went to Souq Waqif, I felt like home. It was a really strange feeling because I had never been in the Middle East before.”Two years later, she relocated to Qatar after maintaining contact with someone she met during that visit, a person she later married. “From that moment when I first stepped out of the airport, I felt such a connection,” she said. “Even before I lived here, I already felt like this place was home.”Williams said building friendships and community networks played a key role in strengthening that sense of belonging. “When you come here, you don’t arrive with your extended family or lifelong friends. We rely on each other more, and that creates real connections. Over time, that community becomes your foundation.”Amid the current regional tensions, Williams acknowledged that some expatriates have chosen to travel temporarily or return home. But for those who have built their lives in Qatar, she said the decision to stay is rooted in trust and stability.“This is where I live. This is where I feel safe,” she said. “I have confidence that the government and the leadership of Qatar will take care of us.”Williams also expressed strong appreciation for the country’s leadership, noting that residents receive clear guidance and information during uncertain periods. “We follow the authorities’ recommendations and the alerts we receive,” she said. “The information here comes very quickly and from reliable sources, which gives people reassurance.”She added that Qatar’s leadership plays a significant role in creating a sense of security for residents. “We are very blessed here in Qatar to have this leadership. I feel a deep gratitude towards this country and towards His Highness and the whole leadership.”Williams also lauded the country’s humanitarian spirit, highlighting how people are treated with care and respect regardless of nationality. As a leader within expatriate communities, Williams emphasised the importance of staying connected during uncertain times.“Being anxious can become very isolating,” she said. “My strongest recommendation is to break that isolation, call a friend, talk to someone, and stay connected with your community.”She also highlighted Qatar’s multicultural society as one of the country’s most unique strengths. “It’s like a small planet,” she said. “You meet people from all over the world and that enriches your life.”Above all, she said the country’s safety and hospitality continue to stand out. “We live in one of the safest countries in the world,” she said. “The Qataris are very generous and kind-hearted.”“I am proud to live here,” Williams added. “And I am proud to call Qatar my home.”
